I know some have posted links in the past to some games where a late game capture of the GLB yields scores of techs, but I cannot find them now. I thought I read of one where they got 84 techs, but I do not trust my memory any longer.
That seems fairly impossible, as the GLB is made obsolete by education. So, with the perfect set up where you learn no technology except for your initial 2, the maximum tech you could get is 30 (Give or take for counting error).
There is no limit in theory as you can get future techs. In practice somewhere around 40 should be the number. If you did not research anything after Lit, or at least nothing past AA.
You have 22 in the middle ages all by itself. 23 more in the IA. That is 45. Plus any left for AA. 17 in the Modern Age for 62.
You still get techs after education. It becomes obsolete on the turn that includes getting Education. In one game I got 19 techs, Contruction to Steam Power or something like that. Sirian played a game in which he got dozens of techs in one fell swoop.
This is from long ago and the save is no longer attached but back in SGOTM 09 I tested how many techs someone could learn from The Great Library. I think I still have the saves burned onto a CD somewhere.
Hmm, makes me wonder what would happen in some of my games with the Great Library set not to go obsolete at all. Have to first look at my research pattern and see what could be left for later. Problem is, I use most of the techs one way or another. Not sure if I want to leave any for the AI to research for me. Definitely something to think about however.
Here's my guess: If it never goes obsolete, you could get pull off the GLib Elevator at any point in the game. So if you were building cavs and Rifles and 2 AIs had Synth Fibers, you could (in theory) grab the GLib and propel yourself to Modern Armor. Same principle as the unmodded elevator, just a different time frame.
