Hello!

I'm a student at the University of Nottingham working on my MA dissertation. I've chosen to study user motivations to participate in value creating activities in online gaming communities. My research focuses on identifying user motives to participate in sharing game-related ideas and user-generated content (i.e. add-ons, new scenarios, maps, artwork etc).

I will be listing my questions in this post and would really appreciate it if those of you who are able to answer a given question shared your answers with me. I would prefer to do this on chat as I would be able to conduct the interview much quicker but I am open to conducting it on this thread or through alternative online methods which might be more convenient for you – please contact me through PM if you are able to conduct the interview by chat.

For issues of privacy and confidentiality I will give participating users pseudonyms in the body of my work unless you allow me to use your usernames when quoting your answers in my dissertation.

I am willing to provide a copy of my findings to any user that participates if they contact me and request one. If you have any additional questions regarding my research please do not hesitate to contact me.

Many thanks in advance!

P.S. People who post in the " Civ4 - Creation & Customizationn" and "Civ - Ideas & Suggestions" sections will be especially relevant to this study! :goodjob:

ONLINE INTERVIEW QUESTIONS

To give you an idea of the motives (motivations to do something) that I’m trying to establish, some of the following listed examples might be related to your answers although I’m not excluding other motives which might arise from your answers: fun, curiosity, quality-assurance, information-seeking, developing skills/gaining knowledge, influence game publishers (companies), recognition, career opportunities, passionate about brand, being helpful, making friends, and feelings of obligation to the community.

The interview questions are listed below. Please answers those that you are able to.

If you reply on the thread please list your answers by referring to the number of the question (i.e. #1,# 2,# 3...) this way I will be able to see which question you are referring to.

I would appreciate it if you could avoid using short answers but try to elaborate your answers and cover everything which you feel is relevant to the questions that i’m asking. I encourage you to be descriptive in your answers and even give examples if you feel it’s relevant.

Also I’m sure you don’t have just one reason for any given answer but that there are several reasons you have in sharing information and creating user-generated content; for example one reason for engaging in discussions on the community could be because you want to learn something new and make new friends etc.

If any of your answers are the same as for another questions you can just copy paste your first answer (if it's exactly the same reasons).

Finally, and this is optional just so I can include it in the description of my sample, if you don’t mind please state your age and gender.

These are the interview questions (please answer those which you are able to):

*************************************

4. Have you ever had any ideas/recommendations/experiences/criticism about the game which you have not shared? If so why not?

5. Have you ever created any user-generated content (innovations) for the game (i.e. creating new scenarios, maps, graphics, artwork, modding etc)? If so why?

6. What extra content have you created and how did you create it?

7. If you have created user-generated content (innovation) related to the game and shared it with other users in the community why have you done so?

Moderator Action: Moved to the Creation and Customization forum.

Kian11, since your study relates to creating content, I'll move it to this forum but leave a redirect in the General Discussions forum. We've had researchers before who have also conducted studies, so you are not the first. Interesting topic... :)

1. Why do you join the online community? (physical, emotional, social aspects)?

I joined the community a year or so before Civ4 came out. My main reason for doing so was to have a place to ask questions about the game. I also was looking for a new forum to discuss and debate things with people, since at that time all my other forums had died down to various extents.

2. Why do you share your ideas/recommendations/experiences regarding the game with other users?

This I do for several reasons. Firstly, I have gotten alot from the community and it is only polite to give back. Beyond that, it gives you a good feeling when some information you had can help someone else out. I guess, on top of those, I also just like talking about Civ4 and any oppertunity to do that is enjoyable to me.

3. Why do you share your ideas/recommendations/experiences with companies?

I don't think I've ever directly shared anything with Firaxis itself. I don't generally post in bug threads and I've never emailed them. They have millions of dollars and can easyly pay someone to surf the forums and gather what they want.

4. Have you ever had any ideas/recommendations/experiences about the game which you have not shared? If so why not?

Well, considering the amount of ideas/recommendations/experiences I have for the game, what I haven't shared most likely out weighs what I have shared. I tend to share when that topic is one of my specialties, or if no one else seems to be helping I will make more of an effort to give some kind of advise or suggestions.

5. Have you ever created any user-generated content (innovations) for the game (i.e. creating new scenarios, maps, graphics, artwork, modding etc)? If so why?

I've created and released lots of mods and mod components. At the root, my motivations are very simple: There are things I want in the game and no one else is putting them in there. I also enjoy writing computer code in general and Civ4 code specificly. There is something satisfing about completing a mod and knowing you have taught the game something new.

6. What extra content have you created and how did you create it?

I won't get into listing all my mods, but mostly it revolves around a few things. I got into programing with Python a few years before Civ4 came out, so most of my mods have been written in Python. I have recently gotten into coding with C++ a little more and as a result I've been about to release several of my mods now coded in the SDK.

How did I create the mods can be answered with a few simple sentences. I fought and battled with the code until it did what I wanted. I cut, pasted, and modified the work of Firaxis and other community modders until it did what I wanted it to do.

7. Why did you spend your time and effort in creating it?

I spend waaaay more time modding Civ4 then I ever have playing it, and most of the time I spend playing the game I'm accually just play testing some mod or another. Mainly because I enjoy it. I have abandoned many projects at various stages of completion simply because it was no longer enjoyable to me to work on them. As I've said many times on this forum, I don't get paid for this and if it isn't fun to me I'm not going to do it.

8. If you have never created any user-generated content (innovation), what is the reason for not doing so?

N/A

9. If you have created user-generated content (innovation) related to the game and shared it with other users in the community why have you done so?

I share my mods with the community for several reasons. Firstly, it is just polite thing to do. Secondly, it is nice to know that others are getting enjoyment from your work, things feel kinda wasted when it is just sitting on your harddrive. Lastly, having my work in the CFC DataBase is a secure place to store my mods incase something ever happens to my computer.

10. If you have created user-generated content (innovation) related to the game and shared it with game publishers (companies), why have you done so?

N/A

11. Have you ever created some user-generated content but not shared it? If so why?

I don't release things that someone could do with a few small XML or Python changes. If someone asks a question specificly related to that small change I've made then I will tell them how to do it, but small changes are how you start learning to mod and if every small change could just be downloaded then nobody would ever learn to mod on their own.

12. Do you have any other comments which you feel relevant as to why you share your ideas and user-generated content (innovations) related to the game with other users in the community or game publishers (companies)?

I think the concept of reciprication is a driving force behind the sharing of content with the community. If you spend any time here you will most likely get somthing from it and you will be more likely to give somthing back.

If you don't give back, then people are going to be less likely to help you in the future. Online communities only exist as long as people contribute to them and once people are only taking and not giving, the community will wither away to nothing but guests and lurkers.

I tryed to be expansive in my answers, but if you would like me to expand more on anything, just ask here or send me a pm. :king:

First, I would like to request that you edit your second post (with the questions) and remove the [ quote ] tags. When someone quotes your post to answer anything within those tags will not be auto-inserted into their response, thus they need to manually copy/paste the questions. Not a big issue, but more convenient for the responder means more likely to get responses :) Perhaps use [ Spoiler ] or [ code ] to make it stand out, but be quotable.

1. Why do you join the online community? (physical, emotional, social aspects)?

I personally don't put much truck in verbal communication as it winds up being quite one-sided. I have done extensive work in Speech/Drama/Debate and I know how to read people and feed them what they want to hear. As such I often wind up controlling conversations more than I care to for standard discourse. Online that isn't an issue, and more thoughtful responses can be garnered since people have to take the time to write it out.

Of course, that conflicts heavily with the stereotype of what you find online. But you do find what I seek if you look long enough, and ignore the troublemakers :)

It also provides a very nice emotional outlet as I am able to achieve a level of recognition for my efforts, but not be tied to those endeavors TOO heavily.

2. Why do you share your ideas/recommendations/experiences regarding the game with other users?

Initially it was to see if I understand things properly. Asking questions, then explaining how I see it. Once I understood things for the most part, then it was to reinforce the knowledge. And once that phase was gone it has become simply a passing along of what I have learned, and developing ideas to improve upon the status-quo

4. Have you ever had any ideas/recommendations/experiences about the game which you have not shared? If so why not?

Many. Sometimes it is not shared because it just isn't a good idea. Others because I want to work on it first and have something solid before I bring it up in case nay-sayers claim that it cannot be done. And rarely I do not bring something up because I personally don't want to do it and realize that many will expect I intend to :)

5. Have you ever created any user-generated content (innovations) for the game (i.e. creating new scenarios, maps, graphics, artwork, modding etc)? If so why?

Tons. First time was because I knew how to do it and it sounded like a good idea, so I wanted to see it happen. After that it was just to see if I am capable of it.

6. What extra content have you created and how did you create it?

Mostly new tags in the XML, primarily in the Promotion fields (I won't list them all as I am almost up to 100 total new tags, and some are quite involved). Also a little bit of Interface restructuring, and a VERY little bit of manipulation of models. Primarily it has been in the DLL using Codeblocks, because there was a nice tutorial on how to set it up and I managed to do so successfully. I imagine a lot more work would be done in Blender as well if I were able to follow through the entire tutorial and properly export/setup my first few models.

7. Why did you spend your time and effort in creating it?

It is a nice outlet of creative energy, and it gives me something to focus on so I can clear my mind for other things I am trying to accomplish in my life/workplace. I work in the Sciences, so a lot of my daily work doesn't have any "end point" and I don't get the gratification of a "job completed." Modding lets me set a goal, work toward it, and achieve that goal to release a product. The gratification from that lets you get back to work which seems pointless if you miss the big picture. I also still deal with classes quite often, and having the freedom to set my own agendas and learning curve is a nice outlet from that as well.

9. If you have created user-generated content (innovation) related to the game and shared it with other users in the community why have you done so?

I shared it because someone ought to enjoy what I have made, and I personally don't get much time to play (would rather mod when I have the free time).

11. Have you ever created some user-generated content but not shared it? If so why?

I think all of us who have generated content have been there. Simple answer is that it was bugged to hell and back and I couldn't figure out how to fix it :p I've not produced anything FUNCTIONAL which I have not released though.

Omitted questions did not pertain. You have permission to use any inforamtion you desire from this and my username/other posts, and may contact me by PM if you desire at any point. I hope your project goes well :)

EDIT: Forgot to list, but age 27/Male

Thanks jeckel and xienwolf for you answers!

Xienfwolf,

I've updated the post - i see how that can be annoying if it doesn't actually include the questions when you quote my inital post (sorry about that).

Do we have any other willing participants? :)

As for the replies that you leave me I will need some time to actually code and classify the answers you give me according to "motivations" - i will most likely get back to you though either on here or through PM to follow up on any given answer which i might need some more information on or simply clarification.

Good work guys!

To the mods: To elaborate on my sample characteristics could one of the moderators let me know whether this group is self-regulated or whether the publisher of Civilization runs it? Thanks in advance.

To other users: Are there any other users who could spare a few minutes to reply with their answers to my questions :undecide:

To jeckel and xienwolf: I appreciate that you've taken your time and given me "complete" answers so to speak rather than short answers - that's exactly what I need. By giving examples and contexts of different situations i'm better able to get a deeper insight! I'll be going through your replies tomorrow and getting back to you if I have any follow-up questions.

I just noticed that i dont have gender/age down for you - could you send this to me or state it on here? Thanks!

1. Why do you join the online gaming community?
Because it is bigger than the local gaming community and I like the international flair (I enjoy writing in English and communicating with people from all over the world).
It also is easier to find a lot of people sharing the same ideas and passions, if you look for them online.

2. Why do you share your ideas/recommendations/experiences/criticism regarding the game with other users in the community?

Because a discussion is always good for looking at a problem or issue from different perspectives. And some people might seek help / answers, which you can give, just for the aspect of helping someone else.
Further I think it´s like with many things one enjoys, it is just fun talking about it (compare sports, shows, music, etc.)

3. Why do you share your ideas/recommendations/experiences/criticism with game publishers?

I didnt do that too often, but I think the argument behind it would be to help producing a (one might say "subjectively") better game

4. Have you ever had any ideas/recommendations/experiences/criticism about the game which you have not shared? If so why not?

Sure. The ideas I don´t share are usually those, in which makings I would not like to be involved because of time or skill issues. (And I have the experience (careful: very subjective), that it is very unlikely someone else will create one of your ideas, if you are not an active or driving force behind it (e.g. you can start a mod, but you will have to do the biggest part of it to convince other people to help you).

5. Have you ever created any user-generated content (innovations) for the game (i.e. creating new scenarios, maps, graphics, artwork, modding etc)? If so why?

Yes, started with xml modding and quickly moved on to graphics. First I wanted to shape the game to my liking and expected several other people to like it as well, so I shared it. Then I wanted to help out people who had ideas I liked, but lacked art. It was amazing to see projects taking shape and being part of this process. Furthermore, being creative is very relaxing and once you mastered the tools to a certain point, you can really create things the way you want them to be (with restrictions, most likely time...). For me "creating" is an important part of my free time and in nice balance with sports and party.
I also can confirm what xienwolf said about working in science.

6. What extra content have you created and how did you create it?

I created several hundred "unit" graphics. starting with modifying firaxis created units and later creating my own units from scratch using Blender3D and Photoshop 7. Mostly humanoid fantasy characters with some additions of WWI and post apocalyptic units, but also some buildings and terrain graphics

7. If you have created user-generated content (innovation) related to the game and shared it with other users in the community why have you done so?

My first intention for creating unit art was to help out the community. Two years ago, there was a big lack of artists on the board and any help was welcome. Later I joined some bigger Projects and created units solely for those projects. Most of my units are distributed through the modpacks (in which context they where created) instead of single uploads to the database.

8. If you have created user-generated content (innovation) related to the game and shared it with game developers, why have you done so?

Because we were invited to create units for the epic game and a scenario included in the expansion pack "Beyond the Sword". I think for me there were two reasons behind accepting the invitation. First was the "official recognition" on (it is quiet satisfying being able to say you were featured there, when you have to explain friends why you spend your time on creating small creatures)
And second the enthusiasm about our project (Fall from Heaven) and the team behind it and everything related to it :)

9. Have you ever created some user-generated content but not shared it? If so why?

Not really. I usually spend too much time on a unit, to not share it (if someone can use it in any way, it was worth the time...)

12. How can gaming publishers further encourage community users to share ideas/recommendations/criticism and share user-generated game content with them on gaming communities?

I think civ4 is a good example, making the tools and the information how to modify it easily accessible is the major point.
Maybe one could make more "contests" and official sites / news about it. (Many people dont even know about "mods" until they discover it by chance).

13. Do you have any other comments which you feel relevant as to why you share your ideas and user-generated content (innovations) related to the game with other users in the community or game developers?

First, it is fun and joy is only real when shared. Second, combining your skills with others is always good. Working together with other people is certainly good for character development.

---------------
same goes for me:
Omitted questions did not pertain. You have permission to use any inforamtion you desire from this and my username/other posts, and may contact me by PM if you desire at any point. I hope your project goes well

I am 24 and male

1. Why do you join the online gaming community?
I joined this particular community because I was looking for information regarding the game's underlying mechanics.

2. Why do you share your ideas/recommendations/experiences/criticism regarding the game with other users in the community?
I share because it is the sensible thing to do. The new player I help today may be the person who comes up with an idea that helps me next month.

3. Why do you share your ideas/recommendations/experiences/criticism with game publishers?
I don't share with them directly - only indirectly through this community. They have people who read here, so I only have to share once to hit both groups.

4. Have you ever had any ideas/recommendations/experiences/criticism about the game which you have not shared? If so why not?

I tend to take time to think and rethink my ideas. If I find a major flaw, I may scrap the idea and not bother to share it.

5. Have you ever created any user-generated content (innovations) for the game (i.e. creating new scenarios, maps, graphics, artwork, modding etc)? If so why?

I did so because I had both the knowledge and the available time to solve a particular problem, and the problem was at least slightly interesting to me.

6. What extra content have you created and how did you create it?

1)Several small modifications to other peoples content to add additional features that I wanted.
2)Numerous snippets of XML and/or python strewn throughout the forums to answer other peoples questions on how to handle a particular problem.
3)Several small tweaks to the game to alter design decisions that made some portion of the game less fun for me.

Category 1 & 3 were all generated in Notepad. Category 2 is mostly done on-the-fly in my web browser as I am writing the post.

7. If you have created user-generated content (innovation) related to the game and shared it with other users in the community why have you done so?

I shared it because I hoped that others would find it useful, and I happen to enjoy being helpful.

8. If you have created user-generated content (innovation) related to the game and shared it with game developers, why have you done so?

I do not share directly with the developers, but if they want to use anything I have made publicly available they are certainly welcome to do so.

9. Have you ever created some user-generated content but not shared it? If so why?

I do not (directly) share the minor gameplay tweaks I have made for myself (category 3 of my answer to question 6), though at various points in time I have provided people with the information needed to make similar tweaks for themselves.

10. If you have never created any user-generated content (innovation), what is the reason for not doing so?

N/A

11. Have you ever used other peoples’ user-generated content? If so why?

I use other peoples content nearly every time I play. I use it because it gives me a greater variety of options.

12. How can gaming publishers further encourage community users to share ideas/recommendations/criticism and share user-generated game content with them on gaming communities?

This should really be split into two questions.
If a company wants to encourage ideas/etc, all they really need to do is make their customers feel that their input is listened to. If people get the impression that they are shouting at a wall, eventually they stop caring. On the other hand, if they sense that there is a genuine chance that what they say will produce results the feedback will come. Possibly more than the company wants.

While encouraging ideas/recommendations/criticism is mainly an issue of public relations, encouraging user-generated content comes down to product quality. If your game is good, people will want to try to make it do even more. If it is barely playable garbage, nobody will care enough to bother. Once you clear the "good game" hurdle, it is just a matter of making the relevant parts of the game accessible to those who wish to make changes. Good documentation helps, good tools/utilities helps even more.

13. Do you have any other comments which you feel relevant as to why you share your ideas and user-generated content (innovations) related to the game with other users in the community or game developers?

Nothing further to add.

Male, 36, feel free to use my username.

Guys,

Thanks for all the responses which have been very helpful. I won't be able to take/analyze more replies to my initial post as i've got a pretty good sample now and i can see patterns from what i've gathered (apart from the followup replies i'm waiting for). What you could help me with though is one question that ties in with the one about sharing ideas.

For those of you who are able to address this question:

I’d like to know more specifically why you share ideas for new product development (how the game can be made better)? Is one motivating factor to receive feedback on your ideas? If so can you elaborate?

Hey Guys,

Although I can infer the answer to it from some of the replies I've received I just want to make sure i'm right about your motivations.

If those of you who have previously replied could please reply to this :

WHY do you take spend your time and effort into developing an idea on how to make the game better and/or developing some user-generated content?

(this has nothing to do with sharing that idea but rather your initial personal motivation on why you decide to do the above)

Every time I read this thread, it somehow reminds me of Silence of the Lambs. I have slight 'modded' the quote below ('killing' replaced by 'modding civ'):

Hannibal Lecter: First principles, Clarice. Simplicity. Read Marcus Aurelius. Of each particular thing ask: what is it in itself? What is its nature? What does he do, this man you seek?
Clarice Starling: He mods civ...
Hannibal Lecter: No. That is incidental. What is the first and principal thing he does? What needs does he serve by modding civ?
Clarice Starling: Anger, um, social acceptance, and, huh, sexual frustrations, sir...
Hannibal Lecter: No! He covets. That is his nature. And how do we begin to covet, Clarice? Do we seek out things to covet? Make an effort to answer now.
Clarice Starling: No. We just...
Hannibal Lecter: No. We begin by coveting what we see every day. Don't you feel eyes moving over your body, Clarice? And don't your eyes seek out the things you want?

Not sure if I answered that one in PMs, and I've cleaned my folder since our discourse so cannot check. So this may well conflict with an earlier answer, as moods and random lunacy change from day to day :)

Short answer: Because it is fun.

Long Answer: I typically do it because I am not sure if I can. Getting in there and figuring out a way to make it happen is incredibly enjoyable. The best is when I CAN'T get it to work, because then I have a puzzle to roll around in my mind for a few days (if I am lucky) and keep myself entertained when stuck doing more menial tasks like driving to work.

Hehe, I also may have replied to this in PM, but if not here we go.

I have to say it is because I wish to have some aspect in the game when I play and if I don't mod it, I won' t get to play it. I spend most of my time coding, its what I do, its what I enjoy doing. If I have a choice, Civ4 is my hobby, and the next best thing to playing is modding. Beyond that it all comes down to fun, no one pays us to mod, so if its not fun I'm moving on to the next project that provides me enjoyment.

So I guess you could say, I create content so I can play the game with it, but the first rule is I have to have fun creating it or its not going to happen. :king:

Can someone point me to some user-generated content (maps, game characters, units, artwork etc) which i can take a snapshot of and include as an appendice in my dissertation? It could be content related to any game not just Civilization. If you have any detailed "prototypes" or such that would be great as well. It will help readers to understand exactly what kind of thing users of gaming communities are able to come up with.

Thanks!

1. Why do you join the online gaming community?
The main reason for why I joined the community was because I never had found any forum or place to discuss Civilization on and when I found a link to this community at 2K Games Civilization IV site I joined it.

I also like to discuss things with people and that is just what you do at a community. The community is also a good place to find out new things about the game.

Why do you share your ideas/recommendations/experiences/criticism regarding the game with other users in the community?
I do that because I like to share my ideas with others and to get response from that. I also like to help other people with my own experiences of the game so other can use that and maybe help anyone else.

3. Why do you share your ideas/recommendations/experiences/criticism with game publishers?
I don't really share my ideeas/recommendations/experiences/criticism with game publishers.

4. Have you ever had any ideas/recommendations/experiences/criticism about the game which you have not shared? If so why not?
Yes I have when for example there is many, many answers in a thread were anyone needs help and I don't have anything to add I don't share my ideas/recommendations/experiences/criticism. I also haven't done that if I haven't been really sure about something anyone is asking for.

5. Have you ever created any user-generated content (innovations) for the game (i.e. creating new scenarios, maps, graphics, artwork, modding etc)? If so why?
Yes, I have made user-generated content for Civilization IV since December 2007 and I do that because I think something is missing in the game like a civilization or scenario. I also create custom content for the game because I think it's fun to mod the game and plan for a scenario or modification.

6. What extra content have you created and how did you create it?
I have created civilizations, traits, modifications, scenarios and maps I was missing in the game. Some examples are Vatican City civilization, a scenario about Hammurabi and a pack of 7 new traits.

I created it by modifying XML-files in the games and finding art for i.e. flags for civilizations and I've also used other user-generated content from other users on CFC like animated leader graphics.

7. If you have created user-generated content (innovation) related to the game and shared it with other users in the community why have you done so?
I have done so because I want response to what I've done and to get ideas for what I can implement and edit in my work. It's also very fun to share it with other users so more people than just I can use my work.

8. If you have created user-generated content (innovation) related to the game and shared it with game developers, why have you done so?
I've never shared my user-generated content with game developers.

9. Have you ever created some user-generated content but not shared it? If so why?
Yes I have and the reason is because I don't think it's sufficiently finished to share it with others or haven't got the time to do that. I also don't share things I don't think is good enough to play with. I've some content by me on my hard-drive that never is being used by me.

10. If you have never created any user-generated content (innovation), what is the reason for not doing so?
-

11. Have you ever used other peoples’ user-generated content? If so why?
Yes I have used other peoples contents like animated leader graphics for using it for civilizations I've created and also to play with it in my game like other people (I think) use my content to play with in their games.

12. How can gaming publishers further encourage community users to share ideas/recommendations/criticism and share user-generated game content with them on gaming communities?
Maybe they can have staff being members at gaming communities to read player ideas/recommendations/criticism and find user-generated game content that could be used in a new game and then contact the creator of the content.

13. Do you have any other comments which you feel relevant as to why you share your ideas and user-generated content (innovations) related to the game with other users in the community or game developers?
If you share your ideas with other people they're more willing to help you and share their ideas and if everyone just asked for other to share their ideas nobody would share any ideas.

Hey guys!

I am almost finished with writing up my dissertation - my deadline is this coming week.

One last request from you that I have is if you could share any screenshots of you using toolkits provided by gaming publishers in creating user-generated content. I'm looking for screenshots of both when you are working with game code and of more simpler methods such as creating maps through drag and drop features... i'd like to include these screenshots in my appendices to support how gamers create user-generated content, share it with the community, and why gaming companies should take note of such content.

Please either upload them on here or contact me through email ASAP!

Thanks!
