Welcome to the 27th edition of the Lonely Hearts Club for BTS. In the Lonely Hearts Club we explore strategies to cope with one of the most dreaded situations in Civ IV ( possibly the main reason for reloads after the military collapse one :p ): starting in isolation....

For the 27th game in BTS the choosed leader was Justinian of the Bizantines:

Somebody asked for a religious nuts, here we have ;) .Seriously, Justinian is one of the BtS leaders I never played, in spite of already had faced his love for mounted units ;) His traits are better shaped for war than for peace, with Imp allowing more GG and Spi those very known civic switchs to get extra promos on the units ;). That combined with a UB that gives :) from horses and a mounted UU that it is arguabily one of the strongest in game, Justinian is a killing machine in the hands of a human and a dangerous religious nutcase in the hands of the AI ( if he gets horses, that is ).

In here..... well, this is possibly one one the only case that we'll see a medieval UU in action in a LHC, given that it is a knight as strong as grenadier, allowing to shun cuiraseers for a while. His traits do not play well with isolation, but his UB certainly does ( if we have horses, that is ;) ). I think this will be interesting :p

His UU
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0040.jpg

Like I said above, the cataphract is a knight UU with 12 str. Just that says that it is stronger than anything until grens or Rifles enter in action. This makes him a interesting bet in terms of chosen unit if you want a post astro war, before the grens and rifles enter in action and they are surely a strong bet as a reserve force .

His UB

Civ4ScreenShot0041.jpg

The Hippodrome is a boosted theatre that gives :) from horses. Any happiness in a isolated game is sorely needed, and getting it from the resource that enables the UU is a nice asset. Besides that Hippodromes are cheap, allowing a easy build. i bet they will be very valuable

The start (for reasons that I'll explain below, the warrior may not be exactly in that spot in your game ):

Nothing like a bucketload of food and not only a single tech to improve it since the beggining :p Well, it is far better than the last LHC... in fact i wonder in it isn't too much food for a capital city... to the north there is jungle, sugar and dyes, not good for second city sites, but surely a nice asset after CS, Calendar and IW

Regarding the saves: given some complaints about the efects of the AI starting without archery in high levels ( giving a unfair advantage to AI that have early UU and/or have early warmongering tendencies ), I decided to make 3 WB saves ( all in the same zip file ). The WB saves are equal except for the fact that one of them ( labeled Monarch ) has all of the AI with archery as starting tech ( corresponding to a game started in Monarch ), one ( labeled Immortal ) has all of the AI with archery, hunting and agriculture as starting tech ( corresponding to a game started in Immortal ) while the last is the corresponding to a game starting in Noble ( labeled Noble ). All WB saves are playable in all levels, but ( for a example ) if you use the Monarch one the AI will start with archery ( and archers ) in any level. This has only a slight effect in the human directly ( mainly via the garrisons of barb cities ), but has a huge effect on the AI gaming in the outer lands ( avoiding scenarios like Pacal, Shaka or Sitting Bull to take all the barb cities and becoming moguls ). I strongly recommend the usage of the Monarch save if you want to play in Monarch+ and the Immortal at Immortal/Deity.... All the speeds are working well ( no more games ending in 1900 ) The saves are zipped... you only have to unzip this to the worldbuilder saves or for the PublicMaps folder ( either one will do ) and load it from the scenarios.
Any problem PM me...

P.S WB saves are crosscompatible between 3.13 and 3.17 if they don't have No Espionage ticked. No problem with the patches here :p

Again a small request ( not mandatory :p ) :

We ask the participants to do, if possible, a write-up with the victory save and a description of your game ( strategies, techs researched, wars,...). All the info should be in spoiler tags ( to not disturb other people's games ). If you want ( we would like to :p ) post reports at this moments of the game:

Checkpoint 1 - when we have explored the island and are aware of what resources it has. Its not so important when this is, but this is a time to discuss city sites etc. Don't look into a checkpoint 1 spoiler until you have reached this point yourself.

Checkpoint 2 - first contact - when we have met all the other AIs. At this point we can discuss our strategy to get to this point and our plans for dealing with them.

Checkpoint 3 - when we are committed to a victory condition (or at least think we are).

Checkpoint 4 - Victory (or defeat).

The last words are to wish good luck to all :goodjob: . And let the games begin!

P.S We don't have any kind of problem with defeats and reruns. Just play and enjoy ;)

Never played Justinian before so...

:bump:

:deal:

Will have a bash at this on Monarch/Epic, and try to get a different victory other than Space victory.

Start is pretty nice. 3 food resources, trees for chopping and on the coast for the Great Lighthouse. Pity the starting techs aren't too helpful... and if I'm reading that screenshot right, then it looks like Justinian is on the south of the island, with jungles to the north. Not good, jungles are a pain.

@ rolo: I thought Bren would come first :p

Nevertheless, looks like a fun start. Will play as usual, on Emperor/Epic.

Wonder if astro + capatrechets would be doable on this map... They are sorta along the same beeline(although you need monarchy / feud / guilds more to get them).

I am not wondering if it is doable to ever do it, obviously it is, i was wondering about if there were targets for it...

Rolo, Justinian's UB gives 1 Happiness, and Another for having horses. You also forgot to mention it gives +1 happy for each 5% of the slider instead of the usual 10%

Just FYI :)

Checkpoint 1 Emp/Normal

Spoiler :

I popped a scout from the first hut on settling so a quick run around the island (until he ran into a lion  ) netted me 3 more huts all giving me gold which will help settle my first couple of cities at least.

A rather large island with all the decent sites in the South.

Yes we do have horses for the UU/UB I don't think I will be settling there very early though.

Initial build was starting SH. Tech path I thought about going for an early religion but decided on fishing. As soon as fishing was in I started on 2 x WB, worker then 2 warriors. After fishing I went for Agr/AH/Mining currently finishing writing. I've taken a big chance leaving BW till after Writing but as my plan is to go BW/IW/Pot/Math/Sail/Calender I need all the early research I can get. If I survive that long my 2nd city will go just to the NW picking up the fish/dye/sugar. Third city will hopefully pick up some metals. If not a quick change to Archery might be needed ;).

On to checkpoint 2.

Good luck all.

Of course cataphracts are doable intercontinentally but it may be more practical to use something else.

Bottom path is pretty good for water maps anyway though.

Signing in! More whipping practice!

I know, I shouldnt be so much greedy, but I cant resist:lol:

At least Sal isnt in this game. I am getting sick of him.
Decent island. There is a room for cottages, specialists and production. 3 happy resources and stone, altough it's too far away, maybe not Pyramids this time. The warrior(in my game he was on the dye) revealed a fish, but it won't be in the capital BFC, unless if I move the settler 1W. Since it can be worked from another city, I decided to settle in place and keep the health bonus. Not much luck with huts. 270 gold, warrior and barbs. They were 2 but my warrior survived somehow. This is our island:

We can settle at least 12 cities. Unfortunatelly there isn't a good location for the second city. IW is obviously a very high priority. For now I know, that I want The Great Lighthouse. I'll probably go for early Astronomy. Cataphracts+ Galleons? We shall see, but more likely no.

That is why I post screenshots of the civilopedia ;) I only make a very small intro in the caractheristis and often skip abilities of the UU/UB or of the traits to focus on what I consider to be more important for that game. having a military resource ( that opens the UU BTW ) giving :) IMHO is the main feature of the bizantine UB. OFC that the rest is not to be shunned :p

You use way too many smileys.

All that food....and no way to use it. :crazyeye:

I might try this one on Noble//Epic. Never had a truly isolated start before (though warred into isolation before. That was fun *grumble*grumble*)

Justinian's UB practically is a Colosseum replacement.

Checkpoint 1 Monarch/Normal. Tentative dotmap included.

Another option would be Bureau capital 1N for the river health/levee, but then Production city would have to go 1E, losing 2 hills. Moai could end up going there to make up for it, however.

I have the GLH so my plan is to REX the next 5 city sites, since 4/5 being coastal should keep me afloat will teching to either CoL or Calendar. After writing/math, should I go for Calendar for all the dyes and single sugar, or Currency/CoL? I think the next logical city site is the coastal gems for a commerce boost. Thoughts? After that I think the next step is optics for tech trading and probably Astronomy, perhaps off Liberalism. Current capital will probably end up as my GP farm after it's served its purpose as a settler/worker pump, so I have no qualms about the nearby cities stealing the mine tiles for production. Constantinople can also build a few wonders if anything presents itself.

Checkpoint one: Noble/marathon 1200BC Warning spoilers inside regards BW and IW techs

Spoiler :
Rolo mentioned in the hands of the AI Justy is a religious nut...I say why in the hands of just the AI, religious fanaticism is human after all:D

The start:
start0001.jpg

Seafood start, settle in place since plains are -1:food: (may as well make it neutral. Now I want an early religion, but also make use of the seafood. I start to build worker, and decide on a gamble by teching fishing. The idea was that seafood tiles when worked give 2:commerce: (translating to :science:), and by the time the workboat is done my city will be size2 giving +4:science: per turn, which is a massive tech advantage. Polytheism was my 2nd tech. Buddism was founded in a distant land about 9 turns before my poly was about to finish...meaning I may be in luck insofar that either the AI didn't attempt poly or the extra BPT gamble paid off. I founded Hinduism, and teched agri, AH, mining, BW (no copper nearby:(), IW (there was a lot of jungle around, iron just outside bfc), pottery.

At this stage I had a settler, 4 workers, 2 axes and a woodsmanIII warrior(my starter that popped 2 exp huts). Then the religious fanaticism got hold of me. I needed another religion, and it had to be in the same city for wall st purposes, so I hold off settling the gems, and go for Oracle->CoL slingshot.
2nd-rel0000.jpg

Now I am ready to ReX, with a double holy city, that once shrined will generate a good deal of gold. I have decided to run a CE, and use SP once enabled. My dotmaps:
No1
dotmap-10000.jpg

No 2
dotmap30000.jpg

No 3
dotmap20000.jpg

certain city placements are up for debate, but there are a few commercial powerhouses available on this island.

And my one city at 1200 BC
cap12000000.jpg

The plan now is to ReX steadily and get all cities up and running, while not crippling my economy too badly. Next check point will be when I discover my rivals, as until then there are no real milestones.
