BTS game anyone?

Yes, the next MTDG should be with BtS.

Pitboss is way better, eliminates procrastinators, dirty delays and marginalizes political juggling in the UN to pervert the gameplay.

^^ But not all people can use it, myself included.

But i am certainly up for another one :)

PBEM while not the quickest provides more of a team aspect.

Dirty delays? political juggling? Have you played or followed the last MTDG? This isn't the demo game where its all about rollplaying. Perhaps you should look around in the MTDG forum to get a better idea. The only "UN " problem we had was when the discussion to patch came about. IT was discussed and a fair intelligent agreement was made unlike anything that has happened in a demogame.

I agree that Pitboss seems to provide a better platform. There would be a real penalty for not getting the save played by the deadline.

Is there a way to pause the turn-timer? If not, then I'd say stick with PBEM. If there is a pause, then I see no reason not to use PitBoss.

I'm also someone who won't be able to see the game directly if it's pitboss, but I'm still for it.

 There was none of that in this last game, nor in the Civ3 MTDG1, nor in Civ3 MTDG2. The delays have been purely technical - the patch(s) release(s) muddled peoples' installs, leaving most teams with only one turnplayer, and sometimes none

(which is why it will be important to be able to pause under extreme circumstances ;))

You can pause pitboss. It would certainly be a better way to go. You could even try to avoid complaining about pausing to go to team discussion by having some rule about 3 pauses per x turns. Even with pauses, it will go a lot faster.

I played a pitboss game once and while it was faster (maybe too fast: we used a 24 hour turn timer but only had 4 people on a team) there were a host of new issues that needed to be dealt with such as double move exploits and host technical difficulties. I'm personally quite happy with the PBEM format.

Another option is sequential pitboss. Only one team can move at a time (I think other teams can log in to observe), and after 24 hours their turn is forced to end.

This avoids the double-move problems with simultaneous turns.

Disclaimer: I haven't played pitboss. I like PBEM because it is easy for anyone to look at the turn, juggle things around, take screenshots, etc. Also, the slower pace of play allows for more discussion and diplomacy.

Is there any way to play pitboss for some 50? turns, then switch to PBEM once the boring early turns are over?

If you need to you can have a longer time limit than what is normally used for most pitboss games. I know that over at Poly I am in a team game where the timer is 72 hours so that means each team has that time limit to play. We can make it work, but first we would need a host. Also for those who have a slow internet connection, then make sure you get the main turnplayer to post detailed screenies of the game.

The convenience of simultaneous turns is that the game moves faster.

The drawback is double moves (from what I remember from the 2 pitboss games I played a while ago).

The good thing about sequential turns is no double moves.

The drawback, though, is the turns will take a lot longer. If we have n teams, and a 48 hour limit, then the turn will take n(48) hours to get back around.

Is it possible to change the turn timer mid-game? For instance, the first 40-ish turns at 24 hours, then longer turns? If we can change the time limit, then the game will move much smoother.

Of course, I don't mind at all staying with PBEM. But there will have to be real consequences for missing the deadline :deadhorse:

I prefer PBEM to PitBoss - just seems like there are always fewer technical issues, in my experience.

HOWEVER - I think if we do opt for another PBEM game there must be an enforceable time limit (as in PitBoss). This can be as simple as choosing an Admin that after a certain amount of time (36 hours without an extension request?) will log in, set any cities that have completed builds to wealth, and then end the turn.
I'd rather play, but would be willing to serve as that Admin if necessary.

With an actual time limit, and a smaller map - I think a BtS PBEM game could be a real success.

This has my vote... its a forced 24 hour rule. We can do the same thing as before with limiting requests for extensions. We wouldn't need an admin except for approval of extensions.

I'm keen for another game, regardless of whether it's PBEM or Pitboss. :)
