Gone fishing for the summer
Hi folks, I've finally returned from my summer hiatus, only to find that my civ skills have deteriorated terribly. I tried playing around on a few immortal and emperor games and I only had one decent start (~1AD). So, it looks like I'm going to have to re-learn how to play this game  I'd like to start a no variant emperor game on one of the saves that I rolled up earlier today. It's not an easy start by any means, which contributed to my early resignation. I'm hoping we can play it better as a team!

Here's the start location:

Since I've already played the map a bit, I'm putting myself at the end of the roster. Map settings are standard, normal, fractal with BtS 3.17. I don't mind if you use BUG but please make sure it's not a version that crashes the gamelog. I think we can start if we get a 4-5 man roster (at which point I'll post the save). Turn sets will be 20 for the first player, 15 for the rest of the first round, and then 10-15 per after that.

Nice simple Emperor - with a tricky start- sounds cool count me in.

I have a brand new clean Bug Install and want to check that it wont crash the game log so will road test it in the game..

I am having a beery weekend in Prague so need to be 3 or 4 on the Roster if it kicks off soon and will miss the pregame discussion!!

if you would like a monarch (i win 2 every 3 games on monarch) player trying to get to emperor i would like to join!

If it's a no holds barred Shaka game I'm in. Pretty much my favorite leader and the start looks interesting.

^^Why on earth would you do that?

Autolog ruins the inbuilt gamelog. Means that when a player w/o BUG loads one of my saves his logs are blank. In theory. Dunno if it actually does that but I believe it does - LKendter has had some bad experiences with this in his LK series, I believe.

Wow that filled up fast. Since rolo designated himself lurker, I'm going to have to make that the cutoff point :p So I've attached the start and placed everybody else in order of sign-up except Ralph, who is before me.

So the roster is:
Corneh - UP for 20 turns
GreyFox (on deck for 15)
PaulusIII
Ralph_Jackson

Any suggestions on the start? Settling in place looks like a no brainer since moving will make us lose a clam and fresh water. Plus we get a hammer bonus and we can build the Moai later to increase production. The only pressing question is whether we go fishing-warrior or AH/BW-worker first. While I would normally go fishing, I think going BW-worker may be a stronger move here because of the forests around the start. With a worker, we can mine the pigs for a 2/3 tile which is quite strong, and BW will allow us to chop out boats faster as well.

On this start I would say fishing. If the pigs were on grassland I would suggest AH (nothing beats a 6 food tile), but since they are only 5 now, fishing->BW seems better.
There is another advantage to fishing.
Depending on later scouting, you might decide to chop the great lighthouse here. Fishing is a required tech on the way and AH is not.
I would wait with the Moai decision. This city looks more like a GP farm to me (NE).

i agree on settling in place and start a warrior. also agree on fishing -> bw. also this cap screams to be a GP farm

EDIT:
Oops i just notice im up right away i wont be able to play till sunday because of a huge drinking festival! so i am gonna ask for a swap right away

Lurker comment

My understanding of the BUG log problem is that if someone saves after playing with the CIV4ColorVals.xml from SimCutie's ExpandedColors mod then anyone without that file who tries to open the in-game log later will CTD (crash to desktop). Obviously, this means the in-game log is unviewable. That file is not part of BUG anymore (and has not been since version 2.3) but there is a chance that it is lying around from an old version. For more information, see ruff's BUG Mod and the in-game Log CTD topic.

Settling in place and building a warrior first make good sense to me. Techwise, of course Fishing first, then Mining/BW.

As silverbullet remarked this site makes for a great specialist site, but that means we likely want to move our capital later on. Ah well, can't say much about that until we know what's around us.

Actually, we don't have the full picture now. After you settle the tiles south will be revealed. If, for example, these tiles reveal another pig, go for AH and worker instead.
If there is a farm resource, build a worker, since Zulu start with agriculture.
Basically, I suggest fishing ONLY if there is no additional farm or pasture food resource.

Here we go.

We have an additional corn down south ... a total of 5 food resources  ... it indeed is a GP-Farm site.

I decided to go worker first since we can work on the farm first. But fishing is crucial for commerce, so I still go fishing first. In any case, mining + fishing will be in by the time the worker is completed.

The settling also revealed a hut, which is promptly snatched:

Not too good. The rest of the map looks pale in comparison with our capitol.

Turns later, we met the Two-Boulders (her face is really undesirable) and stole the hut from right under her noseblossom:

She lost the hut, but gained enlightenment (i.e. founded buddhism).

Although we have pigs and worker, I think we need to whip more urgently than we need to pasture the pigs. So I go for BW first instead of AH. Meanwhile, the worker can mine the pigs for added hammers. He would however have nothing to do soon, so wheel might be a priority next.

We are also boxed in by Celtic, so an early war seems inevitable.

I think you guys are getting an idea of why I said this map was... less than spectacular  The capital has lots of food but the nearby land just sucks.

Mining the pigs for the time being sounds like a good idea to keep the worker occupied. Also, it may be better to not pasture the pigs until we need the health since the capital is otherwise hammer poor (excluding chops) and it could use the 3 hammers. So BW sounds good, followed by archery if no bronze (since pasturing the pigs is not pressing).

Unfortunately there are very few :) resources around (wine looks to be the earliest accessible one) so monarchy may be a higher priority than normal. Obviously the big question is going to be what to do about that massive expanse of jungle to our south. IW without a commerce tile will take a very long time so we may not be able to settle the jungle for quite some time. There looks to be a decent city site on the west coast near the corn/wine - probably at the mouth of the river so that it'll get 3 grassland hills. Unfortunately, that's a long way to trek for a settler and a warrior :(

Roster (I've moved you down the roster instead of swapping you Corneh):
GreyFox just played
Paulus III - UP for 15
Corneh (on deck)
