To my knowledge, the only "complete" Medieval German sets released for Civ4, are based very heavily off of Teutonic Knights or Crusaders, which invariably involves mostly an all-white unit set, and a lot of Christian crosses for the main heraldry symbols... while this may be historically accurate, I find it quite dull. I've also seen a few more-or-less "yellow" sets, which invariably use the Hapsburg family crest, which to me is more HRE or Austrian in nature (and yes I know, the HRE covered large portions of Germany, but in Civ4 Germany is Germany and the HRE is something else [and often turned-into Austria]).

I've always been wanting a purely "German" set that wasn't based off the Teutonic Knights or the HRE Hapsburg family, but had some sort of "uniformity" to the look.

In that quest, I started collecting/creating a German "Tricolor" set of units... the "Tricolor" is based in-variations on the Red/White/Black of Imperial Germany. All the units in this set have some sort of combination/variation of red/white/black in their uniform/tunics. I've had a number of them for some time, and have released a few here and there, but never have I had a "total" collection, and I did in-fact, just finish a few more recently, so here for the first time, is my "complete" collection of a German Medieval Tricolor set.

All needed files are included, as-well as a txt file listing the needed animations for each unit. This set includes 11 combat units and one warlord.

Enjoy.

I don't like it how almost every single German uses the eagle shield (I know WalterHawkwood made a few nice German shields, so maybe you could use some of those for variation?) Other than that, some the red does make a nice contrast.

Every other German pack I've seen has pretty much every German with a Christian Cross on the shield... didn't like that either.

Anyways, there's actually a wide assortment of shields in this pack... almost every German with a shield shown above has one or two alternate shields to choose from in the pack. You just have to download it to see all the options... I'm not taking pictures of all the shield variations! ;)

Here's an example:

There are other variations, including some with various German Maltese Crosses and other patterns.

The set is looking very nice (but the spearmen in the right second row are somewhat looking to me as if they carry umbrellas :))

Germany was a federation of smaller regions, Hesse, Bavaria, Kingdom of Hanover, Saxony,... Prussia and the cities of the Hanseatic League have been important but the tricolore was an invention of the industrial age. So, won't it be best for germany not to use an uniform color theme but different (red-white, blue-white, yellow-black, green-white,...) and different crests?

I don't remember claiming this to be historically accurate to anything... I'm well aware of the German situation in the middle ages. I specifically stated in the top post that this is something different from the usual Teutonic Knight sets a lot of mods use for Germany, such as Danrells...

Anyone is free to make all the "historically accurate" German medieval sets they want... I was just doing something different to a uniform standard. If I wanted to do a "historically accurate" German set, no two units would wear the same outfit or carry the same shield and it would look like a total hodgepodge (as would be the case for just about any Medieval European army). There just really weren't national armies in the middle ages in Europe, so I changed that (and a lot of other sets do too). I'm still waiting to see several scores of other medieval German sets pop-up on the forum. :dunno:

Well these units are going in the mod I am working on (the "later" ones such as pikemen, macemen, knights, longbows, crossbows) and I am using your Austrian units (same categories) for HRE rather than the Italian style units that VD uses. Good work.

And I agree, you can't go for complete historic accuracy, especially considering Civ is hardly historically accurate to begin with.

Good work.
