Hello CFC members and lurkers! Welcome to pick your leader - TMIT rips a series off Bleys (with permission) version! Since the series has been successful and professionally carried, I'm keeping Bleys' format and crediting him here!

This is the fifth installment a series called Pick Your Leader. The idea is based on a single, common map, but a selection of AIs to choose from, each with his own unique starting position on that map.

The goal is to see how wildly varied the map becomes with various players taking control of their own choice of Leader.

Due to a bug in the World Builder saves, and how the games are created from scenarios, there are some issues about having a choice of leaders and difficulty AI bonuses. This makes it necessary to do things slightly differently than "normal" saves. This months ZIP files contain 9 WB Saves, one for each leader for monarch+ and one that will work for all leaders prince and below.

Now that we have that taken care of, I will move on to this months theme.

Industrious Leaders!

Every single leader on this map will be industrious. There's and extra AI, for a total of 8 civs, just as a heads up! WONDER CRAZY! How will you react? Do you outbuild, or build nothing and take it all? Pick your powerhouse and have at it!

I am not going to post Starting Locations. I am simply going to list the leaders, and attach the ZIP, and we can go from there. I will say that the map is a Fractal, standard size with an arid climate. There may be a surprise or two in store for this one also!

I would like to have as many do reports and progress updates as possible, but it is not a requirement of any kind. This is designed to be a FUN series, to see what happens when we alter the human-element in different spots on the map. I am sure most of us have played games where were saw an AIs capitol and starting location and though "Wow, I would like to have tried starting from that spot!" Well this is how the idea was born.

I do ask that all reports be labeled and formatted as follows:

Choice of Leader, Difficulty and Speed, Years covered in report. And then the report itself inside a Spoiler. For example:

Spoiler :

Willy, Monarch, Epic, 4000 BC through 1 AD:
Spoiler:
Since Pacal showed up on my left VERY quickly, I decided he was close enough to Rush, so I went for BW, built 50 Axemen, and ripped him to shreds! Heres is a screenshot of those shreds. <insert screeny of 3 City Ruins from that REX-spammer>

This is so that others who do not wish to gain pre-knowledge of the position or resources of others can avoid reading them until they wish too. Sort of like "Since I know Bismark is a Wonder-hog, and saw stone in his starting position, I didnt bother with the Great Wall" kind of thing. Thats kind of another reason to not publish the starts right away, so players can pick a leader without being biased by the starting tiles. If it doesnt work out this way, and folks would rather see the starts like I have done in the past, just mention it. This is YOUR series, not mine. So tell me what you prefer, I dont mind criticism at all, as long as its constructive and polite.

Here is the list of leaders for this month. We have 8 for this go-around:

Augustus Caesar: (IND/IMP) - For those peaceful players out there.

Bismark: (IND/EXP) - Hats win games. Pointy hats dominate them.

De Gaulle: (IND/CHA) - First person to wipe a civ entirely with the UU gets 5 TMIT points, redeemable at any local CFC forum.

Huayna Capac: (IND/FIN) - He's extra balanced.

Qin Shi Huang: (IND/PRO) - China is united, will it rule?

Ramesses II: (IND/SPI) - Rumor has it he camps with 6 cities, spams wonders then takes over the world in the modern era, and favors nukes. And cats.

Stalin: (IND/AGG) - State property recommended.

Roosevelt: (IND/ORG) - WARNING! I added him for flavor...his position is likely incredibly weak! This is a challenge start for sure, also made for some .

As your host, I recommend you select an industrious civ ;). Bleys was going to make this incarnation blind to the players, but Fractal is practically the same thing.

Since all the WB Saves are in a single ZIP this month, all you need to do is download that ZIP, and extract the file of the leader you wish to play. Remember, if you want monarch+ pick an individual file, otherwise just pick the "all starts" one. Save files to: My Docs\My Games\BeyondTheSword\Saves\Worldbuilder folder.

Then start the game normally, load your favorite MOD if you wish, and choose "Play a Scenario" from the menu. You will see a listing for the leader you chose, pre-fixed by "PYL V".

In the Scenario menus, you may choose whichever level of difficulty and speed you wish. All bonuses should be correct now, no more Warrior Rushes on Monarch, and the AIs wont be as slow building Wonders and teching, since they have been given Archer in the Monarch-saves.

If you are a "Prince trying to learn Monarch" level player (I think this is a VERY common skill level on these boards), there are actually 2 choices for you, "Monarch-Light" (playing Monarch level with the Prince ZIP-save, no Archery for the AIs) or "Prince +" (playing Prince level with the Monarch ZIP-save, AIs start with Archery, but will play at Prince "skill" so to speak)

ONE SIDE NOTE: I am pretty confident that the saves are all correct, but if ANYONE runs into any problems, please PM me or post here ASAP. I did not start every single save, I edited one, and started it, and then just made minor changes and re-saved each file, but a stray character here or there is all it takes to muck em up.

TMIT's Note: For some reason it's still giving you the option to choose any leader regardless of save. DISREGARD THIS AND PICK THE LEADER WHO YOU EXTRACTED, and it will work fine as far as I can tell through testing. I'll sort out the details with Bleys or Rolo later so that it auto-skips that step...but for now these all work with proper bonuses if you match the leader you select to the save :p.

Signing up for Uncle Joe, Emperor/Epic.

EDIT: TMIT, something seems to be wrong with the zip file. I can't open it.

Hmmmm...

I'm still awake so I downloaded it onto this (my desktop) computer as a test. I used winace to zip it on my laptop, while my desktop has winrar. Both seem to open it ok :(. I can't test the files themselves on this computer because it's too old to run civ IV effectively, but I tested 4 of them after I made them on my laptop and they all ran fine. You're having trouble with the unzipping portion?

Ah, it's just compressed with a program I don't have. Works fine now. Thanks.

Thanks for putting this game up TMIT :), I'm still busy finishing off Nobles Club but will be starting this soon after. I'm probably going to play this on the Monarch Lite option as I'm still ironing out my ability at this level.

Not sure which leader to go for yet, but you've got me really curious about roosevelt, although thats a tough start so maybe not!

So tempted to play, but im reabusy at the moment (start universty on monday). Just a thought, could Roosevelt be a GLH special? If i do play itll probably be with him anyway...

Cool, TMIT, glad you decided to put one of these up. I have been pretty busy lately, and just havent had the time or patience to do it myself.

Tough choice on who to play. Of all the leaders, Ramesses and Roosevelt are my fav IND leaders (Other than Gandhi in Vanilla, LOL), but for this, I think I will go with HC, since I have never actually played him since I was a Prince level guy. Playing at Emp, since I have been getting crushed so baddly on Immortal.

hahaha I love your description of ramsess, geez I wonder who thats targeting?

Signing up for Ramsess II since he is my favorite leader afterall.

Wierd... I tried double clicking on the zip file to extract and I got a corrupt file error; however, when I just right clicked and did the 'extract here' it worked fine. So just a heads up the file seems to be OK, but a little finicky.

Hm... i got maybe an hour a day for this sort of activity and my laptop is stupidly slow for gaming. Looks like im skipping this round.

HC, Emp, 4000 BC - 2525 BC:
Spoiler :
Decided out of the gate to see just how well these Quechas actually do at this level. Built a worker, then started Quechas, while I teched Mining and BW, and sent my starting Q out looking for my first target. Popped a Scout from a hut, then I ran into DeGaulles land, and also ran into Bismarks scout right near there, so I figured he was close by as well.

To make a long story short, I built 6 Quechas, and took both Berlin and Paris without a single loss. I also took 2 workers (one was his first settler) from Bismark, and a Worker from DeGaulle, so now I have 3 "Capitols", 6 Quechas, 4 Workers, and a scout I popped from a hut.

I decided not to bother continuing, and I now understand why HC is not allowed in HoF games, and why I dont ever play him. He is ridiculously overpowered.

Even if I hadnt rushed, HCs starting spot has 6 FPs, 3 riverside grasslands, and a Cow, so it would have been a mega-strong Cottage Capitol anyway, but man, this leader is VERY strong in the hands of a reasonablly skilled human player.
I am going to try Augustus now, see if I can do the same thing with Praets (a bit later, heh). I actually have only played Auggie one time, in the LHC a few months back, so the Praets werent a factor. I have played regular games with JC, in fact one of my early Emperor wins was with him (I went for "easier" leaders when I first started Emp, like JC, Willy, Hannibal, and Hatty).

Hmmm...

I decided to give Qin a whirl and go for a nice peaceful wonder-fueled cultural win. So I'll have a go at normal Monarch (rather than Monarch-Lite).

I love china's starting techs, Aggriculture/Mining.

I did check out Roosevelt's start, just too tempting to see what all the fuss was about!

@TMIT regarding Roosevelts start

Spoiler :
Excellent! What a bizarre start! I think I'm definatley going to have a go at Roosevelt after I'm finished with Qin, just curious to see what can be done with it. I'd probably play that one out on Prince tho to give me half a chance.

Would anyone mind giving me a Qin 4000BC save? I just can't find a way to open this zip.

Krick, try right-clicking, and select "extract files" from the menu. They will go to your default location (I think, mine is desktop and thats where mine went).

Why didnt you just use a normal zip format anyway? Winzip has been one of the first programs i install ever since i found it way way WAY the hell back.
