Background:
Turkey was created in 1923 from the Turkish remnants of the Ottoman Empire. Soon thereafter the country instituted secular laws to replace traditional religious fiats. In 1945 Turkey joined the UN and in 1952 it became a member of NATO. Turkey occupied the northern portion of Cyprus in 1974 to prevent a Greek takeover of the island; relations between the two countries remain strained. Periodic military offensives against Kurdish separatists have dislocated part of the population in southeast Turkey and have drawn international condemnation.

After bitter and bloody house-to-house fighting Turkish troops from the 1st and 2nd Infantry Divisions defeated the Georgian defenders. The corrupt and unstable Georgian government has been over-thrown and General Hakan Memit of the 1st Infantry Division has been made temporary Governor of Georgia.
The fighting broke out at around 5:00am in the morning when Turkish troops entered the capital of T'Bilisi. Georgian defence forces were finally forced to surrender at 6:00pm the next day after heavy losses on both sides.
Turkish troops are expected to remain in the country for another few months to attempt to break up the terrorist groups which forced to the invasion of Georgia.
President Eduard Amvrosiyevich Shevardnadze of Georgia has been arrested and is currently being held in T'Bilisa awaiting to be expelled from the country.

Turkey - Armenia Relations Crumble
Extract from 'The Times'
Recent talks between Turkey and Armenia concerning the return of land to Azerbaijan have stalled in recent weeks leading to increased military presence along the Turkish - Armenian border.
Current reports from Istanbul seem to be pointing towards a military invasion of Armenia in the near future...

Background: Georgia was absorbed into the Russian Empire in the 19th century. Independent for three years (1918-1921) following the Russian revolution, it was forcibly incorporated into the USSR until the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991. Russian troops remain garrisoned at four military bases and as peacekeepers in the separatist regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia (but are scheduled to withdraw from two of the bases by July 2001). Despite a badly degraded transportation network - brought on by ethnic conflict, criminal activities, and fuel shortages - the country continues to move toward a market economy and greater integration with Western institutions. Although following a recent dispute with Turkey has since been taken into Turkish control as of August 2002.

Turkish Troops Move Into Armenia
Extract from 'The Istanbul Post'

Turkish troops crossed the border into Armenia today in what the President called 'an act of defence'. The movements come just weeks after talks between Turkey and Armenia, concerning the return of land to Azerbaijan, collapsed.
President Ekici declared war on Armenia to 'protect the interests of Turkish Muslims living in Azerbaijan'. Armenia and Azerbaijan have been at an uneasy cease-fire for months although recent troubles on their borders looked set to end the agreement...

Background: An Orthodox Christian country, Armenia was incorporated into Russia in 1828 and the USSR in 1920. Armenian leaders remain preoccupied by the long conflict with Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh, a primarily Armenian-populated exclave, assigned to Soviet Azerbaijan in the 1920s by Moscow. Armenia and Azerbaijan began fighting over the exclave in 1988; the struggle escalated after both countries attained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. By May 1994, when a cease-fire took hold, Armenian forces held not only Nagorno-Karabakh but also a significant portion of Azerbaijan proper. The economies of both sides have been hurt by their inability to make substantial progress toward a peaceful resolution. In September of 2002 the country was taken into administration by the Turkish government after failing to reach an agreement on the return of lands to Azerbaijan.

Good god lol, I thought Roddy was losing his mind when he said he was finding it hard to distinguish between real headlines and the game's headlines.

But now I know what he means, I was reading the thing on Armenia, which I know came from the CIA, and where you've tacked that bit on about being taken into administration by the Turkish government I was shocked lol!

Then I realised what you'd done. Very well written Dexter!

Turkish Troops To Protect Azerbaijan

Turkish Tank Column heading for Azerbaijan
The Turkish Prime Minister today gave the go-ahead for Turkish Troops to enter the war-torn country of Azerbaijan.
The move is an attempt to bring peace to the country following years of civil unrest and wars with neighbouring countries. The word around Ankara though is pointing out the move might be in retaliation for the recent happenings in Russia. Following the death of the Russian President, Russia has since slipped back into communist control...

Background: Azerbaijan - a nation of Turkic Muslims - has been an independent republic since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Despite a cease-fire, in place since 1994, Azerbaijan has yet to resolve its conflict with Armenia over the Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh enclave (largely Armenian populated). Azerbaijan has lost almost 20% of its territory and must support some 750,000 refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) as a result of the conflict. Corruption is ubiquitous and the promise of widespread wealth from Azerbaijan's undeveloped petroleum resources remains largely unfulfilled. Following the rebirth of the Soviet Union, Azerbaijan was taken into protection by Turkey as of November 2002.
