So the last game didn't go so well and we're re-rolling on monarch. Again, I've played the first 40 turns to make sure we're not dead in the water. Also, no Caesar in this game (I picked leaders).

Our leader:

First our starting position:
Civ4ScreenShot0027.jpg

Yes we have horses!

And the surrounding area at turn 40:
Civ4ScreenShot0028.jpg

Here's the quick turn report:

Turn 9 - Buddhism founded (Izzy)

Turn 12 - Hinduism founded (Gandhi)

Turn 13 - AH is in.

Turn 20 -Mmining is in.

Turn 32 - BW is in.

Turn 33 - Revolt to slavery.

Turn 38 - Hunting is in.

So I've set research to archery as we have no bronze nearby. I think bowmen should suffice on defense for now though. As for settling... there's not much good land around. Yes we have gems to keep our research going for the time being but no good food sources. I recommend teching iron while settling cow/clam up north. Then maybe west to gold/cow/FP or south to the gems.

Roster (let me know if you need to drop out):
shyuhe just played
Paulus III - UP
BurnEmDown (on deck)
Ralph_Jackson
GreyFox

Let's go 20 turns each this time around.

Signing in ... The lack of copper is worrying, but then archery should have been researched anyway. Bowman is pretty good with 50% against melee. Properly fortified, not even a sword can kill it.

EDIT: the land west seems good enough, with floodplains, wine, cow, gold. A tad far for a second city but we should perhaps settle aggressively in an AW game initially to ensure we have land to grow later when the AI starts piling in.

PS> Paulus will need the save.

I'm ready for war, shyuhe!

I think 1E near the nearby cow (3 tiles northwest of our capital) is good enough for a 3rd or 4th city, if we build a coastal one later and send a workboat for the clams.

Good point Greyfox :p

I don't think our land is that bad. In fact, I've seen worse... a lot worse.
Teching IW is the way to go, though. We need iron badly.

I think we should try and do a gambit with the gold site far west of us. With bowmen we don't have much to fear from barbs or enemy civs so we could try to settle it.

I would agree with going for Gold, Cow, Stone city to stake out our land.

Our bowmand should hold up pretty well againt the AI (hope I am not tmepting fater here!!).

Indeed, bowmen are quite good on defense. It's unfortunate we can't plant the gold/cow city on a hill as otherwise it'd be great on defense. We should also see if there are any hills in that area to figure out what the best spot is. As it stands, it's going to be short on production unless we plant it 1E of the cows for cow (3), gold (2), and stone (4) hammers. And then it'll take 10+turns to get the tiles in the BFC.

I wouldn't send the settler out without an archer+chariot protecting it. Babylong can build a settler pretty fast at size 4 (all improved tiles!) and there are two workers that can chop out the units.

Laptop went FUBAR and as such I have no computer fit to play Civ IV on. Therefore I need skip. :(

Got it! 8910

T1 - Our chariot kills stupid Indian's archer, who walks outside of his forest shelter :) for now I don't upgrade the chariot.

T2 - Nothing special.

T3 - Archery is in, Starting to research iron working which should be done in 14 turns.

T4 - Our warrior kills a lion and a Spanish archer right after :) (both attacked him when he was in a jungle), workers start to chop bowman out of Babylon.

T5 - Archer is chopped, switch tiles to grow Babylon to 5 on same turn.

T6 - Nothing special.

T7 - Nothing special.

T8 - We meet Monty and find Izzy's borders to the west, I suggest killing her ASAP with a chariot\bowman rush, Judaism is FIADL.

T9 - Kill Napoleon's archer and Monty's scout with chariots, Izzy got copper (!) Monty's borders are revealed south of us.

T10 - Napoleon's borders are revealed near Monty's, steal Izzy's worker with chariot and move it out of her borders, in order to kill her archer next turn

T11 - I do something stupid and waste the chariot near Izzy's city's moves >_< but atleast we keep the worker who will help us build up the 2nd city.

T12 - Nothing special.

T13 - Kill Monty's scout near Izzy, getting some more Bowman\chariot to attack Izzy.

T14 - Nothing special.

T15 - DAMN those barbs killed the chariot and the settler!! stupid me :< IW is in, switch to Pottery (done in 8 turns). Iron is revealed north of our 2nd city, might be worth settling 3rd there if we don't capture Vienne in time (for the copper).

T16 to T18 - Nothing special. Fredrick's borders behind Izzy's.

T19 - I whip\chop settler in Babylon.

Things to do:
Settle 2nd and maybe 3rd city
Take Vienne. (build forces in babylon)
Maybe build 'mids or TGW with stone?

:( How did we lose a settler? That's never a good start...

No iron nearby the proposed second site. I actually like settling 1W of the iron on the coast better as it'll still get gold in the second border pop and it'll get clams as well. Plus it'll give us metals a lot earlier.

Mids or GW are not worth it on this map. Neither will help us that much at this point and frankly aren't worth the hammer investments. We don't have a secluded city like the last map to build wonders with.

Also, it's Boudica to the west, not Izzy :) And we have 49 hammer overflow. I'd put it into a settler (5 turns) instead of a chariot. Maybe we can spam #2 near the iron and #3 near the cow/stone. We have bowmen to protect them and Babylon can spam some bows while it grows back to the happy cap.

Yow, lost a settler? That's not good. Allow me to give a heartfelt "*CENSORED* you" to the RNG since I suppose that's what happened.

Unfortunately I'm still not able to see the save so you'll have to go with the advice of the others.

Agree with Shyue, metals is definitely more important than stone. Shyuhe suggested settling 1W of iron. An alternative site is to settle 2E of iron, making it a lot closer, but shyuhe's suggested site is far superior in terms of food and resources.

Too early to talk about attacking Vienne ... monty and Nappy seems a lot closer than Boudica.

So a relatively quiet set expanding our Empire and hopefully keeping it safe!

First BurnEmDown a little friendly SG Advice

Please don’t leave automated citizens on as it is better to MM the city yourself and don’t leave settlers with go to Orders as it can result in the next player finding them exposed after pressing enter. Nothing serious as I spotted them so no harm done.

Having picked W of Iron for our next city I switched research to mysticism -> Fishing and then back to complete Pottery as our new cities need a border pop and IronTown will want a WB fairly quickly.

With the overflow going into the Settler our 2nd one was available quickly and we had rapidly picked up two cities.

cities-1.jpg

The RNG was throwing his normal rubbish our way but nothing too srious. The Pasture is being rebuilt and we wanted to build a Few Bowmen anyway.

badrand.jpg

The hot action occurred down south where our brave warrior spent all turn running around avoiding archers..

usainbolt.jpg

So End report.

We have Mysticism Fishing and Pottery in and we are slowly researching writing. I burnt our gold to get Myst and Fishing quickly so have been gradually rebuilding.
Both our cities have Monument (Dur just whipped) and Iron is hooked up. Both have a Chariot and Bowman on Guard but we need to keep building Military.

endwest.jpg

Our capital has just whipped in a worker that is rebuilding the Pasture and our first Axeman is on his way I would add a Spear to the Southern Bowman on Border Patrol duty as that combo on the forested hill will be hard to shift..

And our Brave Warrior is still alive having run the Gauntlet..
