This unit is for Exsanguination's Alexander the Great scenario, and is really only suitable for the Macedonians (or the Greeks in a normal 'random' game of civ).

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1) download the zip file to a temporary place on your PC

2) use Windows Explorer to open the CivilizationIII/Art/units folder on your PC and right-click the units_32 file so that you can rename it (otherwise it will be overwriten, so you should keep a copy)

3) now use the unzip browser to unzip the file into CivilizationIII/Art/units. This will create a new folder called Hypaspist which contains all the .flcs and files, as well as Civilopeadia and readme.txt files with full instructions on how to add this unit to Civ3 using the CivEditor.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Important note: I have only included a limited units_32 file with this unit. This is because Zulu9812 is doing an excellent job of keeping an up-to-date version going. So the one I've included is only so that people can cut-'n-paste it into their current versions (if you can't do this, then see the readme.txt file that comes with the unit for how to get a copy of Zulu9812's up-to-date version).

Suggested stats for this unit (see the readme file that comes with the unit for more details):-

Attack 2, defence 2, move 2 (this is the same as the Peltast that I made previously), but in addition, + 1 HP and cost 60 to reflect that this is an elite guards unit, and so should be few in number.
I also suggest that this unit be given the blitz ability, so that it can make more than one attack, which also fits it's elite status.

What is an Hypaspist? Well here is the Civilopeadia_text file that comes with the unit:-

"When Alexander the Great became king of Macedon in 336 BC following the assassination of Philip II, he also inherited his father's army. The guards unit of this army was the Hypaspists (or "shield-bearers") and was an elite body of three 1,000 man units, the head unit being called the Agema (or "bodyguard"). Unlike the Macedonian Phalanxes, the Hypaspists was not formed from regional areas, but was instead a corps consisting of the very best soldiers from each phalanx. Later the Hypaspists were called Argyraspids (or "silver shields") following the new equipment they adopted during the Indian campaign. There is still much debate amongst historians about how these troops were equipped. Some scholars think that they were armed the same as the rest of the phalanx with a long two-handed pike, while others think that they were lighter armed, and used more like hellenistic Peltasts. Certainly they were used in the latter role by both Philip and Alexander, and are always mentioned whenever Alexander needed fast light troops for his many rapid flank marches. Also, Philip's feigned retreat at the battle of Chaeronea could not have been carried out by a slow ponderous phalanx, and much later when Macedon came in conflict with the Republic of Rome the Hypaspists seemed to have been brigaded with the Peltasts. Hypaspists disappear from history following the Roman conquest of Greece and Macedon in 168 BC."

Also, the following chart may help those of you who wish to have a little more historical accuracy in their game of civ3....
(the figures are attack/defense/move/(cost), and are suggestions only)

that is a sweet unit. btw - are you going to be posting the Spartan Hoplite and Companion Horseman any time soon? Or have you already done so?

To Zulu9812:-

I'm afraid the Spartan Hoplite and Companion Cavalry (plus the Mercenary Hoplite) will take me a couple of weeks....each!
However, should you wish to use the preview images to add to your excellent up-to-date units_32 file (great work by the way :goodjob: ), then please do so. They will be made.....eventually. :)

To Civanator:-

As you can see from the above post, I'm currently up to my neck with units at the moment. But when I'm free, probably about Christmas (....I'm not joking!....), AND if Dark Sheer dosen't mind, then I could quickly cut-'n-paste some easy variatons of DS's unit.
Of course, by then, you yourself will be a cut-'n-paster, so you could probably beat me to it! ;) :D .

The alternative hypaspist seems to be a bad link though...:(

Oops! You're right. My fault. First I posted the wrong name (....hmmm, drinking beer and posting new units is not such a good idea after all....:crazyeye: ). Then, for some strange reason, I couldn't download the Hypaspist_brown.zip file from the 'easy upgrade' area.

I fixed it now by posting it again with the name of Hypaspist_brown1.zip and correcting the link name.

It works fine now. Sorry about that. :)

Kryten, these Greek units look absoultely superb. Hurry up and finish them! All of them! Two weeks? Each? I can't wait that long...:goodjob:

To Civanator:-

Sorry, but I don't know. I only possess PaintShop Pro 7. But I assume that several of the 'advanced' features won't be in the earlier versions.

Nonetheless, it should still be possible to cut-'n-paste with it, although it would obviously require a bit more thought and possibly take slightly longer. Still worth trying though.

I only bought PSP7 about 5 months ago, and I still don't know what half the buttons are for! I payed £40 for it, purely for the purpose of animating Civ3 units (and do you know, there are people complaining in the General Discusions Forum that they will have to pay for the MP/PTW disk!!!!)

Anyway, while I'm here, have a quick ROUGH look at the next Macedonian units :D .....

What unit are you going to be focusing on next (*ahem* Companion Cavalry)?

EDIT: 1000th Post!!! [dance][party][dance] :yeah::yeah: I am now 94th on the list! Watch out Kal-el... :flamedevi
