Elizabeth (Archipelago Immortal series)

Well, one down, 9 more to go before we complete this run. Just maybe I can experiment with a privateer before we are out of choices :p

A few lessons learned from the last game, and hopefully this one SHOULD go across a little better.

So… let’s get down to business.

Previous game:
Darious I

Turn 0

Spoiler :

Well... what now?

Looks like you're settling in place. :) and fish. The corn is unfortunately just 5F until CS, but still a pretty compatible start with starting techs.

Elephants are just "ok" to work, but hell it's like a commerce grass mine so it's not horrible.

I am debating on worker first, while researching aggriculture. Then heading to Bronze-working next.

What do you think?

Considering you start with fishing, I would consider working the elephant tile and build a workboat, then worker while working fish
As for first tech I'd agree with Ag, after that it would depend on surroundings.

Just in case, how much of the east water can you see if you move the warrior 6 on the forested hill? Is that your plan for the warrior move prior to settling?

This is a more temperate start, location-wise, than I'm used to getting with Elizabeth.

Actually, I just got through reviewing your Darius game. :)

looks crappy; move warrior ne, or e?

it's true it's the only position in which you can use that fish, but on the other hand, the # of water tiles in the bfc is depressing even if they supposedly suck less with financial...

IMO boat first for the early commerce (it can't be pillaged by barbs either).

If the corn were irrigated/seafood was not fish maybe I'd change my mind. As they said above the elephant tile would be best under that scenario.

You have basically the equivalent of 4 hills. It would be strong in production if 2N or 2N1W have metal, but who knows. Either way, unless see something cute moving the warrior (I suggest NE) i'd settle in place.

Let's see what the warrior sees first.

If you're in the mood to experiment I'd be curious to see you turn that capital into a moai+bureaucracy and working all the hills. I doubt there will be another city on this map that could match that production.

(then again, maybe save that idea for Willem+Dikes, but we can't gaurantee a good production starting spot for him. hmmm)

Workboat first, then grow to size 2 before building a worker(since you'll already have 10 food in the bin by then hence just need to grow 3 turns to get to size 2, though it does only shave 1 turn off the worker i guess so just building a worker first might be better since it gives you earlier corn and earlier phants as well as chopping). Tech path something like ag -> hunting -> bw imo...

Turns 0-10
Spoiler :

Well I couldn’t make up my mind about worker first or WB. I finally decided to go Worker, then aggriculture. And here I ran into quite a weird problem. There was a hut that my capital would pop in a few turns, so I kept my beakers banked to prevent them from getting dumped into a tech that MAY pop. Well, all I popped was a map, as can see by the large view at the moment. But then I decided to still keep my beakers banked, incase I ran into a hut with my warrior just ahead.

Well… suddenly I noticed all my saved beakers disappeared into thin air. After some more probing and another turn or 2, I hit F6 and studied the techs. Then it seemed Hunting was available to be researched in 1 turn, while everything else would have to be started from zero. Hmm!

So I chose hunting to salvage some of my beakers but looks like I still lost some in mid air. I guess once you bank enough beakers to research one tech, the game glitches up and your forced to take that tech or all other beakers just vanish!

So, we got off to a terrible start. Wasted some beakers into thin air, and researched stupid animal husbandry. None of these are going to help us with TGL. !!!!

Lesson learned, good thing I didn’t get burned this way at the start of a deity.

Turns 10-20
Spoiler :

I met Justinian from the continent with the stones…
Other than that, nothing special, I am working the corn tile now while growing, and will work on the phants next.

Turns 20-30
Spoiler :

How am I doing so far? Both food hooked up, phants hooked up, and now one mined hill ready. Time to re-mine & pre-chop the rest for TGLouse.

Going to get more workboats out in the meantime, and maybe a warrior for policing.

Turns 30-40
Spoiler :

Two workboats out as scouts already. One hill is already pre-mined but I think I should have mined it fully instead of leaving it pre. I am now wasting hammers with my settler production. The more I think about it, the more I realize this is a mistake. Part of the reason is I have an extra happiness booster here with the elephants (don’t need road to hook up). So again I made another lil mistake here… I am working a hill that is unimproved. Dumb dumb dumb me…

Of course I already switched into slavery.. That’s the point, I was going to do some whips limiting my height size.

Turns 40-50
Spoiler :

Unbelievable these random events.
I just sacrificed turns to pre-chop this forest and was sitting on it waiting for the ready and look what happens….

And I already got unhappiness issues in my cap as it is, but I got the settler out at least.

^@#^!^%

Turns 50-60

Spoiler :

Damn, sitting bull already settled on an awesome continent, with very great resources. I”ll try and get a foothold onto that myself somehow soon. But first, 3 turns left to finish the lighthouse. No thanks to bs random events messing up everything on me.

Also, I had researched wheel, and was planning pottery, to open up metal casting. I have now abandoned that plan after getting the wheel. I don’t have bronze, and after scouting around quite a bit more, I still don’t see any. Sitting bull and Justinian also have none to trade. So this whole colossus thing just isn’t going to fly. I’m better off making cheap archers and grab some good spots for now, and tech up for commerce.

I am going to whip the wonder anyhow, no need in taking chances, I didn’t get to start until turn 50.
A double check on the wonder-list shows us as being clear, but I don’t trust it anymore though…

It was around the time I got 3 consecutive forest fires early on when trying to expand that I decided that I would never play with events on in any non-forum game ever again.

Yep, shows that it pays to always have a little extra cash on hand when playing with events. Being broke is just asking for terrible things to happen.

Cool. Elizabeth is one of my favorite leaders, I like her traits and especially her starting techs. It seems like you got a better start this game; the land looks a lot better in general, and you don't have nasty AIs breathing down your neck from the get go this time (Stalin, Willem =/).

I've been experimenting with the Archipelago map in my own games, as well. My biggest gripe is that I can't seem to find any decent production city sites! It's always a pain having a low prod empire and no means to generate a decent army. (Keep in mind, I'm playing Vanilla, so no Maoi, no Levees/Dikes, no AP hammers, etc.) There's just seafood, seafood, and more seafood =P.

If only there was a way to turn food into hammers! :goodjob:

(Hint, anyone named Joshua is smart.)

That being said, the BtS improvements (dike/levee, maoi, ap) are all very very nice and Warlords/BtS includes some of the best leaders for water maps as it is - Hannibal, Willem & Joao II. Spain makes a good trade route economy as I think Issy was always Spi/Exp but castles don't give trade routes in Vanilla do they?
