For me and I'm only going to vote when I find it acceptable to let myself cry:
Alone? When ever I feel like crying. When in front of close family? Only when the pain / distress I feel is worse than the stress I'll cause loved ones.
Outside influences like Old Yeller dying or the opening sequence to Saving Private Ryan are also acceptable. As are emotional scenes in film that bring back painful memories, but only a wet-eyed cry then.

I think I'd only cry nowadays if one of my close family/friends died. But I'm probably wrong.

I haven't cried at anything important for 20 years, but then I am dead inside, so...
As for the topic, it is okay for a grown man to cry when he realizes that FTL is IMPOSSIBLE.

Ok, Born to Run was pretty good, but not nowhere near weeping in awesomeness (first time hearing it).
Men can cry if someone dies. Everyone is also required to cry when Fry's dog dies in Futurama (that is the only dog death suitable for crying. No Old Yeller or I am Legend junk).
