If you've got your health you've got everything.
That's how we're going to play--we won't do anything to worsen our health.
We won't chop forests (although we can settle a forest), we won't build unhealthy buildings, and we won't trade away our last health resource.
Now we're also not selfish, so if we have an extra health resource we must trade it away to help out the AI.
We also won't settle a city without fresh water where an adjacent tile would have fresh water.

As usual we'll play immortal.

What do you guys think? --Seems fine to me. Settle 1W on the hill to pick up the crab?

Hi Ungy :)

Going for the plain hill between the deers and wheat might give a faster start (production wise)... but loose fresh water... The scout could move one NE to check the location...
Will be lurking ;)

Cheers

I'd say fetch the crab. Start seems pretty good with floodplains nearby.Actually we could scout it and maybe settle our capital there, would not really be in the spirit of the game though. And we can always move palace later of course.
@Ras we're not allowed to spurn the fresh water.

1W is tempting. The main issue with moving there is that forest might spread 1S of our scout and we won't get the wheat irrigated. We could cottage the tile very early for 1 turn (I don't think jungle/forest can spread on the tile then), but that could be too late. It also loses the fur and unlike the crab it could be hard to get another city to work it. Having the extra hammer in the city centre and 2 food resources to run early specialists is great though.

Perhaps we should move the scout before commiting to a spot (1NE).

OK--I move the scout 1NE:

then it seemed pretty clear to keep going 1SW:

I'm inclined to switch gears and settle down by the floodplains. I think settling on the forest is legit.

I would rather settle 1w on the hill. We can have a second very strong city there (by the floodplains). We can of course go vice versa but we'll lose more than 1 turn by moving the initial settler.

well we only lose one extra turn.
We can avoid having a pretty much totally forested capital.

The tile 1SW of the hill is not forested - most likely a strategic resource - I expect horses. I also expect more unforested tiles further west. Having it in the city BFC is a great boost early as we neither need to tech archery nor have to do with archers against barb archers.

I'm happy with setting near the FPs and have another city somewhere near where our initial settler is atm.

Agree with settling near fp's on the forest 1S of deer, great spot. It will be interesting to see how this all pans out. How does the team feel, is this harder or easier than playing without commerce modifiers?

hard to say--seems like this nerfs the beginning and the very end and depending on terrain the middle. The last game nerfed the middle some and the end a lot--of course it was all over long before the end.

OK getting things going--I head over to the FP site and finding nothing surprising I settle 1S of the deer:

I set research to Ag.

We pop gold from a couple of huts.

We meet a neighbor:

he came from the SE.

I'm pausing to check the tech path. I'm thinking we don't need to hurry to BW, pottery seems much more useful.
What do you guys think?
I'm thinking get out a couple of workers and cottage spam a bit to prevent forest spread.

On another note, this looks like a pretty easy map so far. We'll have fur and ivory in the 3rd ring. If it starts to look easier I'd say reload.

The 2 gold fp spot stands out on this map, it blocks off some other goods spots too. I think first priority is to get a settler + escort out to claim this spot. This would mean a quick beeline to archery and putting on a settler asap.

If this all works out we can then reload :).

so research archery, build warrior-archer-settler?
I like the aggressive play.

Those flooded rivers are amazing (and not nerfed by the variant) so I support aggressive settling. I think we'll want more than 1 archer though--it sounds a bit risky.

I think reload should be considered. Not only is this a very good start, but there are so few forests. Maybe we should play arboria instead (but that would be really hard if I remember the map correctly).

Looking at the (arboria) map in WB I'm not so sure anymore--doesn't strike me as that fun to play. I take back the arboria suggestion.

I end up playing a long set as I'm thinking we'll likely reload.

I manage to keep the scout alive and only see a single barb warrior so I decide to go with a single archer. In retrospect, I think this was a mistake as I hadn't met any AI to the E and it was pretty much impossible for Mansa to block us there as I had found him to the S.

I research wheel-fishing-pot-BW. I decided not to whip the settler--going wheel first got back much of the lost time and gave the worker something to do.

Anyway the western map:

the east:

Mansa has another contact.

Not sure where we should settle but they're all good.

I'm off for 10 days starting tomorrow, so I'll turn it over.

I'm thinking reload unless we have an accident next set--and turning it over to Rusten makes me think we'll be reloading!
So just go ahead and reload if that makes sense--I'll be able to post in a few days or so.

save is here:

Roster:
Ungy--just played
Rusten--UP
Silverbullet
Mystyfly
Dirk

We have room for one more--I would ask anyone who wants to join to be comfortable playing on immortal.
