Amazon blocks sale of rape videogame

Online retail giant Amazon has yanked from its virtual shelves a Japanese computer game that lets players simulate raping girls.

Rapelay, being hawked on Amazon by a third-party merchant, was deemed inappropriate and the product's page taken down after it was brought to the California internet firm's attention overnight.

"We determined that we did not want to be selling this particular item," Amazon spokeswoman Patty Smith said.

The game was created exclusively for the Japanese market, but a couple of "like new" copies were being offered on Amazon by a US seller specialising in animated Japanese pornography.

The computer game maker, Illusion studio based in Japan , posts a notice on its website that its products are specifically for domestic users.

"As we say on the website, we don't sell the products overseas because of the rating problem," said a spokesman for the company in Yokohama, near Tokyo.

"I cannot possibly comment on the report from San Francisco.

"We believe there is no problem with the software, which has cleared the domestic ratings of an ethics watchdog body," he added.

The game was released in 2006.

Other titles from the studio include Battle Raper and Artificial Girl.
How many of you guessed it was Japanese? I immediately did. And they wonder why groups like SuperFree form over there? What the hell is up with the Japanese obsession with rape. Now, I believe pornography helps prevent rape, but come on, do we need videogames where the object is to rape women? What's next, virtual reality rape?

I saw this and decided not to post it because its too depressing to tell the world about... words fail me

Battle raper.

What I think is, according to something I read somewhere, Japanese poeple have a lot of cropped up frustration, stron rules in about everything, constant pressure to achieve, and failures in social contact, and then the mind begins having fantasies... bad ones.

or you just can blaim 2chan. :3

still... battle raper...

Does this prompt a revision of the 'Video Games are Good For All of Ya!' thread?
Well, it is good if someone has these fantasies to alleviate them in a way that doesn't harm others, but considering most of the members of SuperFree (a notorious rape gang) read Rape Man comics (yes, Rape Man, the Japanese have a superhero rapist) I think they overdo it quite a bit. They seem to be giving people ideas, rather than alleviating them.

I remember reading an essay about how rape became a way for Japanese men to reassert their masculinity and power after WWII, and it's just sort of stuck. Probably had something to do with a fairly high percentage of Japanese soldiers finding they enjoyed rape when overseas too, and wanting to bring it home with them.

rape is also an expression of epxressing dominance and control, something a lot of poeple lack in a storngly hierarchic society.

Or they're just sick...

So, what's worse? A society that lets kids play virtual rape, or a society that lets kids play virtual mass murders (our society)? No, I'm not defending the rape game. I just see parallels for what we can tolerate in our own society.

I was thinking about that. I think part of the reasons that revulsions against rape is more universal than revulsion about murder is that sometimes, killing someone is legit. sometimes its the right thing to do, sometimes its immoral NOT to do it. there are no realistic circumstances where raping someone is acceptable.

Why do we kill people as a punishment, but not rape people?

Clearly there is a fundamental difference between the way we're programmed to react to death, and the way we're programmed to react to sex. Comparisons between the two are specious.

further proof that japan sucks.

Respect other cultures, respect other cultures, resp...oh screw it, that's just depraved.

This image makes me laugh. The guy enjoying the sight of raping a pre-pubescent Japanese schoolgirl now knows everyone knows he enjoys the sight of raping a pre-pubescent Japanese schoolgirl. A 'FAIL' pic is in order, I believe.

It sure took them long a long time, Rapelay has been around for a while

Video games are still fictional. Now carry on with your discussion on how evil video games are turning people into murderers, rapists and terrorists. Be sure to mention OUR CHILDREN

I don't understand why criticism of one genre of videogames illicits defenses of all genres.
