Behold my first Leaderhead: Zhao Kuangyin! Here is a little bit of history:
Zhao Kuangyin
Emperor of China
(927 AD- 976 AD)
Zhao Kuangyin was born in 927 AD in Hebei, the son of a military officer. As a child, he was trained in martial arts and the military. During the post-Tang period of disunity, he gained allies and territory through his military prowess. In 960 AD, he overthrew the emperor and reunited China for the first time in a century and became Emperor Taizu of Song. As an emperor, however, he is known not for his military power but his scientific achievement and just and free government, an enlightened despot before his time. He expanded the civil examination system, recruiting most of the civil servants through this system. He built academies that allowed free thought and open discussion and dissent. Inventions such as gunpowder, printing, mines, paper money, cannonballs, and the first real archaeology in China began during the Song Dynasty. Defeated military warlords were not executed, but were allowed to take small government positions and rise back to power if they were loyal. The justice system was made more fair, ending the draconian punishments that were common before him. He weakened the military in proportion to the emperor, thus causing military takeovers to be less easy and often than they had been under his predecessors. All of this stability and inquiry allowed science, the arts, and literature to flourish for the rest of the Song period, right up until the Mongols destroyed it three centuries later. Zhao Kuangyin died in 976 AD, succeeded by his brother, Taizong (not to be confused with Tang Taizong, emperor in the 600s).
