Hello everyone! I'm fairly new to the forums and just discovered SGs. They look like a great way to learn and I am looking to start a new one. I have never participated in an SG so I'm sure there will be a learning curve, but then, this is designed to be a learning experience :D

My basic outline for the game is:
BTS with BUG patch
4-6 players
Prince difficulty
Large map - Big and small
random opponents
random leader (?)

Everything including the difficulty is subject to change based on the players involved, etc.

So.... lets go!

Roster:

I might be interested, are you interested in a straight learning game or do you want to give a go at a leader you never tried?

If you play normally on Prince, I would suggest going for Monarch as SG make for a higher skill level due to increased concentration and debates and such.

I might be interested as well. I normally play on prince, thinking about moving up, so either Prince or Monarch would be fine with me.

Hey guys.

I normally play at noble, so thats why I said prince to begin with. I have no problem playing a Monarch game if theres some players on board with more skills :D. Actually, thats why I didnt post a starting position or anything, because I wanted to see what skill level the other players will have.

So, a monarch game fellas?

i'd like to join. currently i'm trying to make the jump to emperor with very limited success plus i don't have tons of time to play but would still like give it a go if you'll have me. thanks for the consideration.

Glad to have you Norvin! Nictel, Sengir; are you guys still in? if so we can get this started soon. Anyone else is welcome to join as well.

Also, since this is my first SG i think it would be best for it to be a learning game, but I am really open to any leader. It would probably teach me more to play with a leader I dont normally use.

Can I sign up? It's my first SG as well, and I'm trying to relearn prince...

Edit: What's the game speed? Epic? Normal? ....Marathon? (gulp)

Welcome, Gooblah. Good to have another SG noob. For game speed I was thinking epic (marathon always feels too long). For the leader, right now I'm torn between going random, or since this is a learning game, picking a leader we dont normally play. Any suggestions?

Since we've both never played an SG here's some etiquette rules I copied and pasted (Credit to DM) that look like they cover a lot

Spoiler :
Alpha: The quality of your report outweighs the quality of your play. We’re here to have fun, and, of course, winning is fun, but losing in style is preferable to a boring win.

Bravo: Reports should be detailed, with plenty of screen shots and player commentary, explanations, musings, etc; an auto-log dump will not suffice. Shots of the F9 screens and overview shots of the empire are nice too, once in a while.

Charlie: Punctuality rocks! “24/48” means post a "got it" within 24 hours of when the last save was posted, and play within 48 hours of that ‘got it.’ Waiting 47 hours to ask for a skip is lame. Punk out two times in a row, and you’ll be dropped from the roster. Skips and swaps are fine, but try to let us know sooner, rather than later.

Delta: Major game decisions (war/peace declarations, religion swaps, city placement, etc) should be arrived at via group consensus.
1. If the team disagrees with you, either argue your case better, or do it their way. Do NOT just blow them off and do it your way because it's your turn.
2. However, if there’s no consensus and you’re up, do it your way and explain why. Conversely, if someone else is up, don't whine when they do it their way.
3. Similarly, overruling techs or city builds is rude and should be done via consensus, barring an emergency.
4. In extraordinary situations, sometimes an opportunity presents itself that the group didn't foresee. If the consequences of it are great, players should stop, and refer the question to the group.

Echo: Being a better player does not give you the right to belittle anyone else or their play. Other people are going to disagree with you on major decisions; get used to the idea, and play nice. If not, take your ball and go home.

Foxtrot: Thread spam is good. Trash talking, poking fun, gentle ribbing, virtual noogies, and generally horsing around are all encouraged, but don’t be rude.

Golf: Automate sparingly.
1. Workers should almost never be automated, except perhaps late-game or building a trade network. However, if you have to, set your game options to “disallow automated worker forest chopping” and “keep previous improvements.”
2. Use of the “Emphasis” buttons is fine, but let the group know and explain your reasoning (specialization is a major game decision). If you prevent growth in a city, let the group know and remind them to take it off. Do NOT let the governor select build orders.
3. Sending units on go-to routes that last beyond your set is acceptable only if they’re heading for a rally point or if you otherwise inform your teammates.

Hotel: NEVER fortify Great People. Is it so hard to push the spacebar 15 times??

India: Sign spamming is rude. Signs can be helpful reminders, but too many signs makes them easily ignored. Once a sign is no longer valid, delete it. [The only exception to this are city specialization signs.]

Ok, I think we can start this once we get one more person confirmed. Please throw in your leader suggestions.

Game:
BTS with BUG patch
4-6 players
Monarch difficulty
Epic speed
Large map - Big and small
random opponents
random leader (?)

Roster:
PeteyP
Norvin Green
Gooblah
Nictel??
Sengir??

Darius is a beast on any level (but I think we all know why), which should ease the transition.
Mehmed II is also good, because of the trait/UU/UB synergy.

And just for kicks, Charlemagne. He gets put down a ton, but I find it oddly fun to play with him.

Hmm I've never played with either Charlemagne or Darius. They both look intriguing. Right now my vote is for Charlemagne. The UU and UB look interesting

I'll join if you're still looking for another. I probably won't be able to play until next week though, so I'd ask to be at the end of the roster.

I'm a Monarch/sometimes Emperor player, have played a couple SGs. Looking to get back into it now that I'll finally have some free time.

Sure, welcome Radio. I guess i'll close the roster now as we have 4 confirmed and 2 maybes. (still welcome alternates though) I'll post a starting position save tonight, probably in 5 hrs or so. I'm still welcoming suggestions on leaders (or random?)

Norvin, would you like to start? It looks like you are the most experience player and it would be nice to have a good start hehe.

Roster:
Norvin- let me know soon if you can go first, otherwise we'll start with someone else
Gooblah
PeetyP
Nictel (awaiting confirmation)
Sengir (same)
radiofreestl

I'm fine with random. Maybe you could generate 3 or 4 random starts and we can pick which one we like?

If others have a strong leader preference though, that's fine too.

I'll be lurking this one since you guys have got your veteran in radiofreestl.

Lurker Comment:
If you're playing a learning game, decide whether you want a crutch-leader or not. Darius is widely considered a top tier leader due to being Financial and Organized (don't even get me started about Immortals!).

Meanwhile, on the other end of your leader spectrum, Charlemagne is in the running for worst leader (alongside Genghis and Toku), because neither of his traits is helpful for the economy. The Rathaus is an amazing UB, but you somehow have to survive until you get it. The UU is also fairly niche as a stack defender.

For a learning game, I'd actually recommend one of the Indian leaders. Both are spiritual, so will tolerate civics errors more, and you get the Fast Worker, which is handy in saving turns on hills or forests.

i'm game for whatever you guys agree on. i prefer random leaders myself but when trying to learn it sometimes helps to not be hindered too much by a poor leader. i can play but think we need a save first as well as time to discuss what to accomplish in the first turnset. i usually play normal speed and find it hard to adjust sometimes to epic speed. silver is right about the indian leaders being very good to learn with. also oddly like gooblah i enjoy charlemagne for whatever reason.

Yes I'm using the newest bug, though I dont think you need the bug to play the saves (not sure about this though). I decided to do random and make 4 saves, then we can choose what we think will be the best. Starting positions will be here momentarily.

Ok, here's the 4 saves.

here is what i see - the roosevelt start looks really strong with the corn and clam as well as the two techs to work those tiles immediately plus some calendar resources. next i think is the huayna start (practically any start with him is a good start) then hammy (decent bureaucracy cap with all the fp's) then brennus. so i'm voting for the brennus start followed by hammy.
