Ok – so Shogun Memphus has already gotten our diplomacy with the Mad Scientists off to a good start – if you overlook the whole "accidentally declaring war on them" thing ;)

Time to send them a formal letter- the sooner the better, I think.
Since neither one of us have alphabet – and Memphus has already handled redirecting their scout, there's not much to do besides try to be warm and friendly at this point.

Here's my rough draft:

Namaste HUSch,
The Ninjas salute the brilliant Mad Scientists.

We are most pleased to have met your people, and everyone from the Mighty Shogun to the humblest ninja-in-training apologizes for our gross diplomatic negligence in our first contact. Praise Sulla, no one actually died!

You have gained great favor with the ninja people with your respectfulness towards our worker. We will not soon forget your graciousness in heading east rather than north.

As Shogun Memphus told you, to the immediate north of your scout there is nought but jungle and then our territory blocking all further access. If it's still relevant and of interest to you when one of us learns paper – we will gladly provide a screenshot of the territory you missed exploring due to honoring our request. Just remind us when the time comes!

Or – if you'd like to scout further north with our blessing – we'd be happy to sign a peace treaty with you and cement the general goodwill between our peoples.

As a "free-of-charge" scouting tip: to your east lies forest and jungle hills – and unexplored territory that is (as far as we can see) open and unblocked for your scout to explore.

Since it would appear that neither of us have knowledge of Alphabet yet – we don't really have opportunity to make any deals. But when the time comes, please know that you have friends in the halls of the Ninja.

Let us know what you think about the formal peace treaty, and any other ideas on your mind.

Thoughts?

Nice Haiku :b: very fitting.

Good letter, humble, although IIRC we are not able to sign a peace treaty anymore, as we have just signed a cease fire, so that sentence may need to be altered.

good by me.....

Do we want to ask them from which direction they came to reach us and whether they have contact with anyone else, or is that something we wait to ask later?

If we found out their relative location, we could focus exploration in a different direction. If they had met someone else, we could offer to trade knowledge of their locations....

Good idea Dreylin - but I think we want to save that for a bit later. We need to start building a relationship first.

Here's version 1.2 with updated language on the peace treaty. I'd like to send this in about 3 hours if there are no further comments or suggestions?

EDIT: SENT! To HUSch via PM and to MS e-mail

BTW, Sullla is spelt with three "l"s if you're meaning the Gentleman of RB who designed this fine map here for us....

Good stuff Gen_W. I like the paper offer since it sends a great message. We need friends because I have a sneaking suspicion we're in for some rough times to the east.

Sent!

To HUSch via PM.
Do we have the e-mail address for their team somewhere?
No time to go look for it now myself, sorry.

Edit: found it!

Reply from the Scientists:
Greetings and Salutations, Honorable Ninjas!

We are simply thrilled to meet you - your reputation has already spread far and wide through this woodsy, hilly, mountainous land. We've been wandering for a very long time, indeed! Aristotle was starting to be somewhat disheveled & disheartened by the lack of human contact!

Our warrior poses no threat to your people at all, and we're anxious to sign a formal peace treaty with you. Something that takes us up through, say, 1AD?

We're also excited by the possibility of future tech trades, but resources are less likely any time soon, unless you have already commissioned a sea-faring cartographic expedition. Alas, we won't have Alphabet for the foreseeable future - how about yourselves?

Let us know about a formal peace treaty - once that's in place we can move forward from there.

All the best,
Peter Grimes, Mad Scientist

That sounds positive... sounds like we are their first contact.
Any reason we wouldn't want peace? Sounds like a good idea to me.

What am I missing about Kaz?

Anyway - about MS - I'm fine with peace. They are the only team we KNOW is on our land, plus they are financial too, plus they aren't doing so well, so may well make a nice junior partner, plus they can spread us a religion.

And no, we aren't their first contact - they have open borders with Cav ;)

I think we should ask, politely, where they are and we could trade along rivers.

Ah, that sure sounds like they are not in a three way tech alliance with Cavs and Kaz.

We might want to ask them what they just researched (suspect IW personally), and if they know Cavs have been feeding techs to Kaz...saying that we aren't sure if they have been feeding Kaz the techs that MS have been researching (this might want to wait until we are sure we can turn them to our side in a tech alliance). We could also say that we are able to procure alphabet, but we are not sure of the usefulness of it atm, because Kaz and Cav have a large tech lead and we are unwilling to risk the brokerage of MC if we were to sell it to only one team, and as such we would want to set up a multitude of tech trades at the same time. Ideally we would also find out what their next (big) tech to research is.

Lay our cards on the table, because azzaman is right, we really do need to palsy up with MS, and hopefully Saturn as well, and make a tech alliance, to stop Kaz, and especially Cavs, brokering all of our own techs.

At makes a good point about rivers, we could also say that we are shortly to be researching sailing, so we can trade by rivers if we have a suitable river network between us.

1AD is turn 115, and our wonder plans currently exist up until t102, so either we ask for a short on until t95 etc and then ask for a renewel shortly before then, or we risk a long one at first; the problem is that we don't know exactly how close they are to us, and we don't want to be contesting settlements, but making border treaties will be impossible without trading screenshots.
