Battle of Hastings Warlords Final Release
Download Here
Update 7/18/09: This mod is now back in development, and should be bug free on Windows! :goodjob:
Update 9/7/09 Beta 2.2 released!
Update 11/20/09 Final Version released! Now onto BtS!
Update 12/22/09 BtS version released!
Link to the BtS Thread

This is the Battle of Hastings mod, a depiction of the Norman Invasion of England. Play as William the Conqueror and invade England with your mighty Norman forces, or defend your great Kingdom as Harold Godwinson, King of England.

This mod is for Warlords 2.13. The current version of this mod is the last for Warlords, as I am updating to BtS 3.19. This version I think is very nicely polished, but what I have planned will radically change to mod in the update.

This is the final release, however I will need testers once the BtS version is out. I just hope to god that I don't break this for Windows users, so I need Windows users to try that version out.

Known Issues/ To-Do List
-Update to Beyond the Sword! :king:

I still am taking ideas, so shout 'em out!

Huge credit to iggymnrr for saving this mod for the Windows users!

I'd like to also give a special thanks to AlanH over at the Mac forum, without his help this wouldn't be here. Also to Sedna17, for compiling Nifskope on his Mac; it has helped me immensely.
Thanks to anyone else who helped me out and if I forgot your name, please let me know and I will add you in!

So... This is what you have been working up for? AMAZING! :goodjob: Do you think you could make a version for BtS? Because most of us have BtS now :( Good job though, and keep it up. :)

Thanks CurryAztec! :) I won't be making a BTS version, though, since I don't have it for my mac. :( Someone else could try if they wanted to. :crazyeye:

you know you can actually play warlords 2.08 mods without having the disk? Fireaxis messed up big on that, which is probably why they were so swift with the patch(s) afterwards. Try it out if you don't believe me, you can pop the cd out and it still runs all the same.

anyhow, do you know if this would work with warlords 2.13 or whatever the latest version is? Might be worth a try ;)

As far as I know it should work with 2.13, but I don't know what would cause errors in the jump. If there is enough clamoring, I will upgrade to 2.13, but most of the Warlords mods that work w/ Macs are for 2.08. ;)
Anyway thanks Shiggs! :D

p.s. AFAIK, you can do that with any version of Civ (at least on the Mac version), modded or not, as long as it is in on start-up. Do you not need to have the disk in for start-up when trying your method?

Darn, it does seem good. I might give a fast test to you in 2.13 for windows, but I do have precious little time lately.

Looks cool. I'll give it a go later. I would reccomend updating it to 2.13 simply because that is the most recent patch that most people have due to the BTS autopatching.
One minor thing that I noticed in the screenshot, Papal Knights. The only blessings the Pope (forget who it was at the time) gave William was the Papal Banner and his endorsement. No military aide.

Thanks for considering a test! :)

Oh yeah, I have Civilization IV Complete, so that means I can still play this right?
You will be able to play with Civ complete, provided no 2.13 errors arise.

Thanks for the fact check, Ajidica. I'm amazed at your wealth of knowledge in history. :goodjob:
I must have misconstrued the support for the Normans as military support in addition. Do you have any ideas as to how to represent the Papal presence, though?

I'll post an updated version and patch up to 2.13 tonight, and hopefully I won't have any problems.

Norman crossbows? I thought William only had archers?
Do you put Harald Hardradda up north or is it only after the battle of Stanford Bridge?

To quote Wikipedia;
The Norman army was estimated to number as many as 8,400 and consisted of at the most 2,200 cavalry, 4,500 infantry and 1,700 archers and crossbowmen.

The scenario takes place after Harald of Norway's defeat, as the Normans landed after Harald was defeated. Hardradda is no longer the leader as he died soon after the battle. Magnus is the leader of the Norweigians (well right now they're the Vikings since I'm lazy, but I should split them up into Norway, Denmark, and maybe Sweden.)

Downloaded it, unfortunatly, it is all but unplayable on windows. (I am running XP, (can't remember which service pack, think it is 3) with warlords 2.13) on load I first get an error saying it can't load the unit artdefines. Then it cant load handicaps infos. Then I get a bunch of errors say that there is more siblings than memory. Don't really know what the problem is. If I get time this weekend I'll take a look at it. If you need a main menu track, here is one. It is from the mod Viking Invaision 2 for Rome: Total War, Barbarian Invaision.

I don 't trust wikipedia too much. The French version of wikipedia doesn't speak of crossbow for instance.
More importantly, the Bayeux tapestry shows zero crossbow.
References: http://www.battle1066.com/wforce1.shtml

However Guy of Amiens, and William of Poitiers (maybe imitating Guy) do speak of balistis/crossbow. It looks like some crossbows at that time may have shot arrows rather than bolts. I think they were probably not much different from bows in terms of effectiveness.

I would be happy to test as soon as I get warlords... :(

Should be within a week.

Looks Great!

@Ajidica
Wow, that really blows. :( I just patched up to 2.13 and mine works just fine after the upgrade. I'll have to talk to Nwabudike Morgan, as he made a Warlords mod on a Mac, and ask him about any issues he had and see if I can find any solutions. As for the music, I honestly don't play with music on, but I'll definitely consider adding it in for the next version. Man, this sucks. :sad:

@ LDiCesare
Even though there isn't much evidence, its still there, and I need more units to keep the game diverse & balanced. It's shallow enough as it is, but I really do appreciate the factchecking, as I would like to stay somewhat historically accurate.
Thank you and keep the comments coming! :D

@BTSformac
Thanks for offering to test! :)
Also, how are you doing on the Crusades Scenario? :mischief:

Crossbows: The Normans did use them at Hastings, at least according to the Warhammer Historical Dark Age Britain supplement book, which is generaly pretty accurate. Considering they were also used by Robert Guiscard at Durrazo against the Byzantines a few years later, I'm pretty sure William would have had them.
Load Problems: I don't think it is due to the patch, more likely due to the fact the IIRC, the Mac version parses the xml slightly differently.
(I have to have my little windows is nicer rant now, we have had BTS since August 07, and your still waiting for it. You guys also have the bouncing beachball of death when loading a program.) Rant over. Lets not turn this into a mac vs windows discussion.

EDIT: For the title page, I'd reccomend a picture of the Bayeux Tapestry or a statue of William, currently, it looks to blurry.
