While the general Hall of Fame is an ongoing competition, we like to run time-definite competitions between updates that we call Gauntlets. Standard Hall of Fame rules (*) still apply, but any games meeting the settings will be counted towards the Gauntlet.

(*) Please read the >> HOF rules << BEFORE playing!

Settings:
 • Victory Condition: Space Colony (though all victory conditions must be enabled)
 • Difficulty: Monarch
 • Starting Era: Ancient
 • Map Size: Standard
 • Map Type: Any
 • Speed: Quick
 • Must Not Be Checked: Permanent Alliances
 • Required: OCC Checked
 • Civ: Any
 • Opponents: Any
 • Version: 3.17.001
 • Date: 25th March to 10th April 2009
Must not play as Inca.
The earliest finish date wins, with score as a tiebreaker.

OK, this is the gauntlet I was hoping to have a few weeks ago, a late game OCC. Things that should be open for discussion.

 • Who are you going to play and why?
 • Who did you pick for opponents and why
 • Map Type and why?
 • What 5 National Wonders are you going to use?

Note, this is BtS only. If you want to play a Vanilla game, Montezuma is raging over in the major.

This is the game where pyramids is important then :)

I gave up the last grindfest one when my last opponent got longbows in 1500AD, obsoleting my axes and impis.

Again I hear expansive is the best trait for OCC (although in my last game I got the herbalist event which basically gave Toku a 3rd trait), so I'm probably going to go with Peter or Bismarck.

Map type? Dunno, but I need inland sea so I'll probably go with that.

Heh, this is exactly how I played on that Inland Sea OCC conquest minor a few weeks back.

I'll probably got with Industrious/Spiritual combo or Industrious/Charismatic or Industrious/Expansionist

alternatively I'll go Philo/Spiritual

national wonders: Oxford, Ironworks, National Epic are must haves.

and 2/3
Heroic Epic
Wall Street
Globe Theatre

The traits I think are important for OCC are: Philosophical, Financial and Industrious. Spiritual is always good and Charismatic and Expansive are handy can be negated by Globe Theatre and National Park. I'm thinking about Lizzy (fin/phi) but Gandhi (phi/spi) and Ramesses (spi/ind) might come into consideration.

National Wonders: Oxford, National Epic are musts. Globe, National Park and Ironworks are also due consideration but if I was playing philosophical and has a coastal start with lots of seafood, I'd consider Moaoi over one of them.

I find that I prefer production over commerce for a OCC so I tend to skip financial when I'm considering traits.
But I play the wonderspam strategy and settled GP for beakers which would play differently to a pure commerce driven capital, which I might also try out, in which case financial definitely has some major plusses =)

I think I may give this a lot of tries to get as many civs and maps out of the way at monarch EQM as possible ;)

5 max in BtS

Wall St is often 0 gold/turn in OCC, so that's out.

Is there any argument out there for anything other than Ox, NatPark, Globe, IW, NatEpic?
Moai was mentioned, but I think water tiles are a big mistake.

I'd probably boot NatEpic first if I had to get something else in there. Many of you are listing NatEpic as a must. How so?

Merging Great People is a good science/production boost. National Epic gives you a nice boost there. Globe Theatre can probably be worked around on Monarch (might not have happy problems) so I'd probably ditch that first.

Won't Emancipation cripple you w/o Globe?
Or are you planning to run Emanc?

Wouldn't NatPark be easier to work around? just pay gold for health resources.

Is NatEpic really that great if you are already Philo + Pacifism? If you get to 20 great people, having the NatEpic for the entire game would only get you 3 more people--max.

National Park can be crazily strong if you preserve forests and run Environmentalism: it solves health and happy problems, and gives free specialists. Intriguing idea about National Epic for a Philo leader, but its value is in getting those specialists sooner, rather than the overall quantity. At the time you're building NE, you'll still be in Org Rel as there will still be plenty of things to build. That said, I might give it a try anyway as NE has always been a default for OCC, and variety is the spice of life :p

This has to be Gandhi for me. Quick speed means that fast workers are better than any trait. And Phi/Spi isn't exactly a bad combo. :p
Opponents: Mansa Musa, and a bunch of peacable leaders who won't divert to culture.
Map type: Inland Sea, I guess. Lots of land =>fast AI tech pace.
National Wonders: forget National Park. I'm going to be chopping all my forests long before Biology. IW, Oxford, NE, Globe, last one is dependent on circumstances.

Ok, we've had OCC conquest, now OCC space. How long before OCC Culture?

I don't think you can get OOC culture without a PA.

OCC culture has already been done! can't remember which gauntlet it was but Jesusin won as I recall and yes you need a PA, though its not always easy getting your PA partner to go culture. Except when you are trying to go to space anyway!

* Who are you going to play and why?
a phi civ with either spi/ exp/ cha so Peter, Gandhi, Lincoln might think about ind as well depends how many wonders I think I need

* Who are you going to pick for opponents and why?
peaceful ones, so Mansa, Liz, Fred, Roosevelt?, Hammurabi? definitely no religion nuts/ egyptians/ Monty

* Map Type and why?
Rainforest maybe, might think about great plains as well
rainforest usually offers a grassland heavy start problem with production though, GP offers some really good hammer heavy starts with tons of cows etc

* What 5 National Wonders are you going to use?
Ox is a must for this, GT probably is as well, I always thought NE was essential as well but I will have a go without and see.

Moai probably isn't worth it maybe if i have a couple of water tiles but will look at the maths first (Moai is expensive for a few hammers increase it usually isn't worth it)
then IW as production will be really essential late game, or altenatively if I have forests left I'll go for national park. I don't really like IW/ NP together as it weakens IW but if I have iron again maybe both
actually that only adds up to 3/4 so I guess I will be building NE as I can see no use for any of the others

I wonder how easy it will be to get aluminium, copper etc

Yes, but that was before BtS (G-minor 32). It's a completely different game now.

I'll probably pick a couple of annoying AI to beat up with my friends, get some easy turns of mutual war for the PA.

Great plan except there are no PAs according to the rules of the gauntlet.

PAs are banned for this one

thats true, so maybe another culture OCC is on the cards then?
