Planetfall has been using the SMAC ambience for some time now. So I figured I'd ask: do you consider it an improvement over what was used before: the vanilla modern era soundtrack? I'm especially wondering if you like the Spartan and Believer sound.
After you posted this, I tried to pay a bit more attention to the soundtrack - and I have mixed feelings.
It's nice to hear the good old SMAC ambience and nostalgia kicks in - and nostalgia is a huge thing, when I hear it, I think of far too many hours spent on SMAC/X (that I should've spent on school work back then!

).
On the other hand, they do sound a little bit dated, with their MIDI-esque sound. Furthermore... they are a bit flat - I may be spoilt by FfH2 - but the thing is: The ambience is really ambience, not really music. When I play FfH2, the music goes "wham" and produces immersion.
So, I'm not really 100% sure. I definitely hope that the ambience stays and it's very nice to have it - but having something else to mix it up probably wouldn't hurt (from my point of view, of course - and I think nice soundtracks got more important for me - back in the 90s, music in games was MIDI-stuff and SMAC was pretty cool - I just have the feel that newer games take advantage of better PCs, better quality music in the game industry and that my personal standards for have gone up as a result).
For example, I really like the diplomacy/cityscape music of Believers, University, Hive, Morgan and partially Gaians (for Gaians, I think it takes to look to get "good" for diplomacy, the track needs to play a bit to get really good). If there's more music like that, it would be nice to have some of it mixed into the soundtrack - they really capture the "feel" and "character" of the faction and put you into the right mood.
However, I wouldn't mind it we'd only keep the ambience.
Cheers, LT.
