ALEXANDER THE GREAT

Welcome to the Alexander the Great Project Thread! This project was started on May 24th, 2009. The Capo (myself) originally called for the project to begin and quickly Ekmek, Bernie14 and The_Coyote answered the call. After around a month or so of work we finally came up with a finalized version of Alexander;

There are also alternate textures for the eyes, hair, helmet, and uniform included in the file. This was the second group project by these LH makers, the first collaborative effort was to create Adolf Hitler. Thanks to Ekmek, all you have to do is download the Alexander files and place them in your custom assets folder, this way he will appear as Alexander in all of your games/scenarios (provided you did not already replace him in any of these). There is an extra folder with the alternate texturing you can use to alter Alex to your liking.

I have also taken the liberty of making two new LHs based on the old Alexander's model for use as Greek leaders in the game. I called them Pyrrhus and Antiochus, but you can use them as whomever you'd like, here is a screenshot and a download link;

Basically my plan is to give him the hair I put on him in the first shot, I might make it darker but it should certainly be a lighter shade (as many of the sources claim he had), and I ultimately want to give him attire similar to the first picture you posted rather than the lame "puffy" shirt under a halloween-costume-armor he appears to be wearing. And I'd like to make him younger looking too, he died at 32. He looks like he's forty in Civ IV!

I think they based the Alex in Civ4 from richard burton of the 1956 alex movie:

I've always wanted a better alexander and i wanted to include it a mod that was a bts conversion of the warlords scenario (with VD units). I have some not-so-good prototypes. I was planning on being more ambitious on the model though. A new head that matches more like the second photo of smeagol's post but with the armor from the first photo. There is actually a decent Alex armor that is in vanilla civ4 (check your unpaked assets) I was going to use that for the body - add the original's arms but was looking for a good head - I was thinkning using san martin's from Civ4Col because it has the shape.

yeah, so I guess I'm in.

PS I actually have one of those tetradrachma's posted n third photo i got as a grad gift

There's different armor in the Vanilla Civ 4 unpaked assets? I'm off to check this out. BRB.

EDIT: I don't seem to have it for some reason. Where is it?

I think there is also a statue of Alexander comissioned by Ptolemy Soter (who would have known him personally) somewhere we should probably base the face on. The hair I used is from the New Earth LH and I think its pretty good so I don't think we need to do anything more than shape it to the head we intend on using. I liked the Alex from the original Civ so we might want to use that as a guideline.

EDIT: The main reason I am proposing this is for my new mod, I want a better Alexander for that. I am also working on a Ptolemy LH for Egypt as well.

I'm stil thinking more ambitious. i liked civ1 alex so it will be cool if we give him pericles sword animation. I may even experiment with oyotes tutorial on custom anims for this one!

EDIT: I don't seem to have it for some reason. Where is it?
there should be two different alexander folders in your art/leaderheads

Its in the Assets/Interface/LeaderHeads folder, not in just the Assets/LeaderHeads.

His armor vaguely resembles Smeagolheart's first pic.

Very strange! Is this how they were going to do all of the Civ IV leaderheads originally? In case anyone is wondering here is what it looks like, it doesn't have arms or anything so unless we just rip peices off of it there isn't much we can actually do with it.

Okay, this is EXTREMELY preliminary at this point. But I threw together a bunch of random crap in Blender just to try and see what might look okay for Alexander's armor. I think I'm, conceptually, off to a pretty good start. I am not at all sure what I want to do about the sleeves though, but I have enlarged Augustus' shoulder pads, put them over Alexander's armor (removing the old shoulder pads he had), gave him Pericle's sash or whatever but made it small to look like a scarf/cape, put a clasp on it, or what looks like a clasp at least, and added a little leather strip (courtesy of Hitler actually) and while this is nowhere near finished I think its a good start in the right direction so far. This is probably going to be the most difficult part of the LH.

Keep in mind its hard to tell what this will all look like when its actually part of an LH, and I did choose a strange angle. I'm not exactly sure what to do about the sleeves, but I am anti-puffy/pirate shirt for sure. I kind of want to go sleeveless in a way, and give him a muscular build.

I was also thinking we could actually use this as a base for the face. We just fix up the chin a little bit, make his nose/skin appear more mediterranean (make his nose a bit more prominent, give him bushier eyebrows) and we may have a good thing going here. He looks about the right age to me.

Well, I considered using that armor too, but its a bit too short. Another option would be to lift the top part off, and place that over some pre-existing armor. It would also need some reskinning too because it has this "comic-book" feel to it and that would look awkward.

EDIT: What do you think of that head/face I posted? I think we can form him into a good Alexander.

Okay, here is what the alexander shoulderpads/cape/etc. look like on top of the original armor. This is just a quick glimpse into what it would look like. Actually looks good if you ask me. I think the chestplate could use SOME tweaking so it looks a bit more like that image Smeagol posted, but I think we're making some progress so far. A reskin might help too.

I threw this together just as some perspective on a possible model to work with so far. I threw Gilgamesh's arms on him. I didn't reskin anything, or alter the model at all yet but I think if we proceed from here we could be on to something.
