Stop! If you are participating in BOTM 19, then you MUST NOT read this thread unless EITHER
  • You have reached at least 500 AD in your game, OR
  • You have submitted your entry

Posting Restrictions

  • Please do not discuss anything that happened after 500 AD,
  • Please do not divulge your final result if that happened after 500 AD.
  • Please do not discuss the location of resources that may not show up before 500 AD.

You had a commerce-heavy start. Did you manage to leverage that well?

4 cities on the mainland, 2 on islands, 4 more planned in islands (if things work out). Capital is science and production. There is a commerce city to the west, an armory city to the north and another commerce city to the northwest. I'm building a nice army to invade an neighbor. Tech is moving slowly it seems but I'm well ahead. Going to space.

I too set down 4 mainland cities, plus 2 island cities which, indeed, taunted with 4 more city sites.

I completely failed to realise the northen city was an armoury untill well after 500AD, very silly!

I was dow'ed by the BK King early-ish, but had plenty of tech to get both the warlords in on the action, captured 2 cities and then sued for peace.

At 500AD I was quite optimistic, and definatly enjoying using Spiritual, which I now think of as a military tech, thanks to this game! (but that was mostly from after 500AD, so I will hush)

I attempted an early rush against a neighbor, making another of my 'noob' MILF mistakes.

This time the MILF (Mistake I Learned From) was simply forgetting this was BtS. I didn't bring enough troopers to the party, and instead of backing off, I sat there and let the defender rack up a new division of troops every turn. I finally took his second city, and failed in a second attempt to take the capital later-- but, this time due to his super-powerful Gawds of RNG.

At 5oo AD I am still at war, but he is apparently moving a SoD to counterattack and this will probably lead to my conquest elimination or my early retirement. SO, at 5oo AD, I am looking for a religious victory.... well, you know, {coughs} ... a "miracle."

Good hunting, everyone else!

I was aiming for a relatively peaceful diplomatic by establishing as many religions as I could and use that to generate wealth/loyalty. Unfortunately, I got bullied by the Incans and the Zulu and refused to give in to their demands... both declared war on me and I ended up getting so far behind in tech and city development that I've been lagging behind the entire game. I guess from now on I should give in to those two aggressive civs, at least for the early game...

Good luck all!

pschulam - Welcome to CFC and the CIV GOTM! :)

I thought I'd try for an early AP victory taking advantage of all the bonus commerce near the capital spot. Founded on the Hills/Plains for the extra hammer, and started on a Worker. Immediately started mining the Gems, then the Gold. Of course. Couple of Workboats, and I'd be surprised if there were many games that differed.

Did make the free CS from Oracle in 1120 BC. Also, knew that I wanted Monarchy for HR to pop up the pop, but I didn't take advantage of it when I learned it, right after Writing. Should have researched Alpha first, and the trade for Slavery might have shaved a few turns off the Oracle date. I kept a monopoly on Monarch and Alphabet to slow down tech trading and access to Feudalism. Wasn't sure if I need Optics or not (made 4 contacts initially, and a 5th floated by later so I'm only down 1 so far), so I did prioritize going down that path, which also got me to Macemen faster. Was pleased to see an Iron within reach.

So I was being pretty peaceful and all. Charlemagne became Buddhist and HC was Hindu. I learned Confucianism by teching CoL first, so I was planning to become Buddhist, spam that around, and use Confucianism as the AP religion, eventually. Then I saw Hinduism spread to Alex and Shaka; OK, change of plans. Be buddies with them, convert when it spread (which it did) and put Charlemagne on the outside.

Fine plan, except Shaka decided to declare. Fortunately my maces were just coming on line. I've been destroying his stacks as he sends them, getting my Maces promoted, and I just got a Great General on the 2nd wave, so I'm heading to Literature for the Heroic Epic and planning my invasion of the HRE.

As of 500 AD I am still a single city, way ahead in Tech (CS, Aesth, Lit, Feud are monopolies, with only the Inca and the Greeks close to those, and I'm heading for Guilds next - going to need some Horses), still haven't found that 6th civ, and planning the invasion. The warfare has delayed the AP a bit (I think), but I'll still go for that victory, and should have other options if that doesn't work out.

Thanks Steve!

How were you able to stay ahead of the AI in research with only one city? I'm still working on the subtleties of this game...

This map looks like noble level map unlike BOTM18. Very fat start position and funny playing! Yesterday this thread was closed and I coould not post my spoiler. I'll try to find time and post it this evening.

Had a great start to the game, managed to pop BW from a hut near Charlemagne, unfortunately when Shaka DoWed I was still too far away from CS to get Maces online soon while 2 swords & 4 impis destroyed 2 skirmishers & 2 axes w/ Shaka having no losses. The turn after that was really not pretty w/ the 2 movement mobility impi. While I could have survived the war with my capitol intact, I was certain to hae nothing left but my capitol. Decided to move on to the WOTM game.

Gained CS from the Oracle, OCC stylee, shaka got the Confu missionary, everyone else was buddist. Didn't stop him from DoW though. I bribed Charles into the war after losing a southern city to his silly little stack. I was badly out REX'd by the AI, Charly especially. Vasslized Shaka around 500Ad with my musket/cat army. Seems i'll be forced to take Steel from Lib and add head to MSci for the Grends/muskets/cannon. Charles is an absoulte monster, has the buddist shrine (everyone is buddist) sadly for him his only horse is traded from me ;)

Greece is backwards but powerful, they will be next. Huypac got blocked in quickly, made no effort to settle more than one piddly city, then vassalized himself to me!

I'm guessing Gandhi is on an island somewhere, on a relegious & wonder spamming bent.

Have to say i enjoyed this map a lot, really keen to have the map at the end of it all.

Earliest possible loss: Downloaded the save, went to open Beyond the Sword, and Steam started downloading the patch even though I had told it not to. Defeated before I could even open the game. :( I don't even have a save to submit (except the starting one!), so I'll just have to imagine my red ambulance.

Contender save. Goal - gold race.

Settled in the start position. 1-st production was worker.

Research: Agri-Fish-BW-An-Wrt-Math-Myst-Poly-Priest-CoL(1680BC)-CS from Oracle in 1640BC.

3480BC 1-st worker was stolen from Charly (ivory tile), 3040BC - 2-d worker from Shaka (copper tile), 2680BC - 3-d worker from Alex (sheep tile?), 2280BC 4-th worker from Shaka (copper tile again).

2240BC Djenne has been founded
2040BC Kumbi Saleh has been founded

2000BC stats: pop 8, land 14, tech 14, wond 5, 3 cities, 5 workers (4 was stolen from AI).

1560BC Ulundi was captured by chariots. I got my stone! :)
1200BC Academy.

After that events ALL AI did not love me at all. I placed few chariots near strategic resources and stole workers each time they tried to connect copper or iron.

Alex was only AI who was able to connect copper. Rest AI worked for me as workers farm.

1000BC stats: pop 20, land 40, tech 27, wond 10, 6 cities, 8 workers (7 was stolen from AI).
Research rate: 143 bpt at 100%.

Later I researched all tech as soon as I needed it.

950BC I finished Pyrs.

My 5-th city accessed marble, but in a turn HC capital expanded theirs borders and I lost marble.
I decided to go for an early Oxford instead of early GLib.

575BC Colossus
425BC GLh

400BC Cusco was captured. HC has only 2 Archer as defenders. Next turn there were only 3 archers and I had no problems with capturing Cusco by chariots, swords and cat. Incan Civ destroyed. I got my marble. :)

350BC Education (speeded up by GS)
225BC Oxford
100BC GLib
1AD NE, HG

1AD stats: pop 81, land 143, tech 54, wond 55, 13 cities, 23 workers (22 was stolen from AI). Game score 1096, Final score 131895.
Research rate: 570 bpt at 100%.

Spoiler :

500AD stats: pop 156, land 214, tech 91, wond 65, 20 cities, 27 workers (26 was stolen from AI).
Research rate: 1017 bpt at 100%.
Game score 1804, Final score 189923. 3 AI still alive and continue worker production for me.

I got Nationalism, Economics, Chemistry(1GS), PPr(1GS). In a few turns I'll get Bio. I did not research Astro to use Colossus as long as possible.

Gosha, can you give me some insight about your production? Especially how many warriors did you have at 2280BC?
Do you escort stolen workers with warriors home or do you risk a lost to barbs or animals?

Very impressiv game!

I forgot to mention one significant thing. After I stole worker from Charly I popped a hut behind his capital where my warrior got experience. After that he became very fast!

Rest warriors defensed my cities. I think I had 2 defenders in 2280BC.

AI did not build roads on resources and did not defend workers! Because of that my warrior was able to steal workers without any risk. After 2-d city was built I sent there chariots to help my 1-st warrior.

It's interesting that even after few workers stealing AI did not defense theirs workers!
And I stole 1-2 workers from the same tiles (copper and iron) time by time.

Yes, I escorted them. Sometimes they walk through AI culture without escort. But warrior-defender highlighted theirs way near home.

If you would not have such a woodsman2 warrior would you have build some more warriors to look after freshly produced workers? Or do you think this would be too much investment in warrior production?
When did you build barracks?

NO! warriors are slow and weak unit for that work. I researched BW early and did not find copper near my capital. I hoped to find horses and researched animal right after BW.

When did you build barracks?

I finished them before I began to build swordsmen to capture HC capital.

Chariots are fast and cheap units so they can get experience while they are catching barbs warriors and animals.

Swords should be promoted by barracks to my mind.
