Veni, Vidi, Vici - I came, I saw, I conquered - Julius Caesar
A Beyond the Sword v3.19 PBEM game. Conquest the only possible victory and using the Tectonics - Lakes mapscript.

Rehost 22nd September '09

Entry to this game is now by invitation only. However those who do not receive invitations can request one by posting in this thread and fulfilling all of the following criteria. Those who do not satisfy all the conditions will not be considered for the game.

Conditions of entry:
1. To request an invitation to this game you must demonstrate that you are a reliable PBEM player or a well-established member of the CFC community. If you have participated in a PBEM game previously, please post a link to at least one such game so I can verify that you take your turns regularly. If you are a long-time member of CFC (you joined either at least 2 years ago or have made upwards of 400 posts) then you needn't have played any PBEM game before.
2. Turns will be taken every two days. If you have a job or anything else which requires that you go on frequent trips or spend a lot of time away from your home or wherever you play civ, then please do not sign up. For the game to be successful we need players who reliably take their turn during their allocated times. I do of course allow for vacations and so forth but it is absolutely imperative that if you are going to be absent from the game for more than a couple of days you let us know or take responsibility for finding a substitute player while you are gone. Players who are absent for 5 days or more and have not made any attempt to contact any of the players in the game will be replaced.
3. In your post you must also indicate two important things: (a) what timezone you are in, and (b) what times of day you are able to take your turn (remembering that you will be taking a turn roughly every two days most of the time). By requesting an invitation to this game you are also committing to potentially spending well over a year participating in this game.
Game settings will be same as last time, but let me mention them again:

Most likely with 7 players we will aim for a 2-day turnaround. This means it should on average be 2 days between each turn. I'm happy to take other opinions on this into consideration, as it might be possible to get a 1-day turnaround if people stick closely enough to their scheduled turn times.

Tech Trading will be left on. But No Tech Brokering will be enabled.

Emperor Difficulty. As I've said with my other games, this difficulty helps to reduce the ICS problems seen on lower difficulties, and it's low enough to make expansion not a total nightmare.

Expected length of game: This game will more than likely take more than a year or two to complete. As such, a condition on joining this game is that you are prepared to see the game out as long as it goes. Retiring is not an option. Understanding that work, vacations and other commitments can sometimes keep you from playing, please make a post in this thread (or the vacation notice board in this sub-forum) indicating how long you will be away for. If a player cannot be contacted for 10 days without explanation, a substitute player may be sought. If for any reason you need to stop playing permanently (e.g. moving to somewhere that doesn't have internet!) a substitute player will be sought.

If you'd like to join, please reply to this thread with your preferred play time/s and what timezone you are in (not just one or the other). This will help me to allocate a sensible turn order.

Wow, 7 human players and conquest victory condition. Hopefully this game will be on marathon speed. ;)

Anyway, can I join? :) I think I'll be able to play the game out to the end. I'm still in high school and my only occupation at the moment is schoolwork.

Time Zone: Eastern, or -5 GMT. I really can't say my preferred play time, as during the summer I play at all times of the day. IOnce school is in session, I'll probably play my turns after school, so a turn would probably be played between 4PM and 10 PM.

Absolutely you can join!

The game is meant to be on Normal speed. I think Normal speed could be a good compromise since it is a small map. I'm hesitant to host a PBEM game slower than Quick but for a Conquest only game I think Quick wouldn't cut it.

Main things to note that make this different from probably most PBEM games are the No City Razing option, Conquest only VC and that Tech Trading is permitted. I can see diplomacy playing a decent role in a game like this, and early conquest of a rival civ might be quite difficult.

Are there any other civs that would be overpowered enough to ban under these game settings? It could be argued that Inca and Rome are not too OP in MP but it's better to err on the safe side IMO.

I'll play!

GMT -8, Pacific Time US,

I can usually play between 10AM-10PM daily, and I can provide my own sub(s) when/if needed.

I'll have a go.

UK time, work shifts but will be able to take my turns fairly sharpish.

Just wondering, but how much land area do you think the 30% lakes tectonics map gives us in terms of city room? I don't have CIV on my computer right now to check. Also, will every civilization be able to have contact with each other before Optics?

My opinion is highly subjective here. How many cities you can fit is going to depend how closely you space cities and how many mediocre cities you build.

I've noticed the amount of land on a 30% lakes map can vary a fair bit between map regens.

On a small map, I'd estimate each player has enough room to expand to at least 10 cities.

Whether all civs will have contact before Optics is hard to predict. Most of the time it should be possible. The map can vary so much with this option (Lakes) that it's really hard to tell you anything general about it. All I can tell you is there is usually a lot more land than in the 70% (Earth) setting or the 60% setting. Sometimes but not all the time there is one main landmass for the entire earth and one ocean or two separated oceans.

When you get a chance to test it in game, this is the version of Tectonics I'll be using (needs renaming to Tectonics.py before you can use it).

I want to play (0200 GMT). This game may actually get started before the Mediterranean one ;) Btw, not sure if you are aware but there's a slightly newer version of Tectonics, the only change from your version is:

# VERSION 3.16 Included Firaxis code for translating the options.
# Kept my copyrights.
# Added more rivers. (Also aborted try at heghtmap for rivers.)
# Updated the Terra option to have much better looking Arabia.

Thanks for bringing my attention to this. Seems there are a lot more riviers now, which is good considering many Tectonics maps previously had large areas with no river.

I will use this version.

Ok the game is now full. However before I start this game I am still in the process of checking a test game with The Oakster.

Also, is anyone here using the Complete Edition for playing BtS? I need to know this because at this stage it looks possible that Complete editions are causing asset mismatches when loading savegames.

No "Complete" here.

It appears that my Civ IV works fine. Game on!

Oh my ! I'm too late !

Well, if you still have a tiny spot on your map for my civ, or a player who finally can't participate, I'm in !

Time zone : GMT+2

Play time: 17 to 23 gmt+2

Now I just need luck... :)

Are we ready to get this one underway?

If me and DMOC dont have turns before or after each other then we may be alright. He is ingames that are working fine and so am I, it just seems that we cant be together... not in that way... you know what I mean ;)
