Hypothetical, of course, so usual rules apply. The year is 2012. Texas has had enough with Obama being reelected and bringing socialism to America, and unilaterally declares independence through a bill being passed through their legislature. It starts seizing federal property and fighting breaks out, forcing the civil war to become violent. No other state seeks independence at this time.

Do you support Texas in its treasonous follies/war of independence? Is this a war for the right to self-determination of the people of Texas, or is it a time to support patriotic Americans to restore the Union? Is it a time to take advantage of American weaknesses, or is it a time to get more buddy-buddy with them?

Note: For the sake of the poll, please presume that supporting Texas or the US would mean that you support the side in the war, not that you would support peaceful secession, unilaterally or bilaterially. The chance for a peaceful outcome is gone. If you have misgivings about this, please say "neutral". If you offer moral support but not armed support for a side, count that as supporting that side, though I am going to call you a pansy if you're American or Texan.

Also, no "I am from Latin America I'm American waaah" business, please.

My first reaction is a big "hell no." However, on further consideration, I would support Texas' secession so that I can burn Texas, from the ground up. Dallas is first. Irving is second. Then it's up to anyone else.

A Big fact NO! Texas will be seeing the American Military if it ever thought of seceding from the union!

I wish I had read this before I voted. Texas needs to burn, like Kuwait did when the Iraqis pulled out. Except everywhere, not just the oilfields.

Yes, we'll rally round the flag, boys,
We'll rally once again,
Shouting the battle cry of Freedom,
We will rally from the hillside,
We'll gather from the plain,
Shouting the battle cry of Freedom.

CHORUS:
The Union forever, Hurrah! boys, hurrah!
Down with the traitors, Up with the stars;
While we rally round the flag, boys,
Rally once again, Shouting the battle cry of Freedom.

We are springing to the call
Of our brothers gone before,
Shouting the Battle Cry of Freedom.
And we'll fill the vacant ranks
With a million freemen more,
Shouting the Battle Cry of Freedom!

CHORUS

We are marching to the field, boys,
We're going to the fight,
Shouting the Battle Cry of Freedom,
And we bear the glorious stars
For the Union and the right,
Shouting the Battle Cry of Freedom.

CHORUS

My loyalty is Country first and State eighth. I wouldn't support Texas unless what the federal gov't was doing was truly tyrannical.

If they wanted to do it peacefully, then I'd be indifferent mainly. They could go if they wanted...hell, I may even move there. Or not. No, I wouldn't go.

In a war though, I'd support USA barring extreme circumstance that would not happen in a thousand years.

As long as Texas just wants Texas, Texas can have Texas for all I care. I'm not going to fight on their side or send them pie or anything but on paper I'll support Texas. It's just Texas.

I don't know if I would support my own state in a bid for independence, though.

Making it a legitimate secession.
It starts seizing federal property and fighting breaks out, forcing the civil war to become violent. No other state seeks independence at this time.
After secession, that property ceases to be Federal and if the feds refuse to vacate it, then they are trespassing on Texas property. Sorry, but I had to correct this error in your scenario.

While I certainly would support Texas' right to secede, under the hypothetical situation here that Texas is alone, that means my State of Missouri has stayed in the Union, so I am obligated to remain loyal to the Union at this point. I would most certainly voice my disapproval and protest any military action taken against Texas over this, but I would not run to Texas and take up arms against my own countrymen.

EDIT: Having spoken with Bill, it was determined that my position as explained in this post constitutes moral support for Texas, in case anyone was wondering why I voted that way.

Secession is one of the only weapons a state has to guard itself from a tyrannical federal government... if it becomes so bad that a state feels the need to secede, then I would have to imagine that it is time to support secession.

They're traitors and rebels and should be treated as such. I think all the other independent states should not recognize the rebel government as legitimate. Certainly, Canada would give them no quarter or aide. Sessession has been found illegal as per Texas v. White et al., and importantly by Davis, Lee et al. v. Lincoln, Grant et al.

But geographic pendantry is what makes The OT The OT!

Okay, I'm a pansy, but I support the USA.

Part of me ALMOST wants it to happen, so we can watch what a craphole Texas will become. Do you think the people that make Texas' dynamic economy would want to stay there after they leave the US? Do the you think the army of educated tech industry workers in Austin will stick around? The professors and administrators of their (really good) university system?

They would still have an economy because they still have oil, but their educated professional base would split, and every Ruby Ridge-living Ron Paul voting nutso would move in. Texas would be a pool of immigrant poverty and crazy weirdos. It wouldn't be nearly as good of a place.
