Welcome to the 52nd edition of the Lonely Hearts Club for BTS. In the Lonely Hearts Club we explore strategies to cope with one of the most dreaded situations in Civ IV ( possibly the main reason for reloads after the military collapse one :p ): starting in isolation....

For the 52nd game in BTS the chosen leader was Stalin of the Russian:
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0027.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0028.jpg

And with good Ol'Uncle Joe we finish the first rotation to the stock leaders of BtS. Stalin is Agg/Ind, a trait combo that some love ( I heard atleast a poster say that he loved using Stalin because it could do both axe rushes and wonderspamming with ease ) , some others would say that the synergy between the traits is virtually none. The UU is also a mid game one ( and one of the two UU that was nerfed twice since the release of the game ), while the UB is the latest of the game ( and that was also nerfed once, by putting it in a later tech in BtS ).

In isolation... well, my impression is that Agg in isolation is almost a half trait: the half priced buildings are not the more useful for building up a economy and your melle units will probably not see much more fight than against barbarians. Ind is another issue, since that some players love the peace and quietness of isolation because they want to build wonders undisturbed ;). The UU OTOH comes right in time for the intercontinental invasions and it is a very interesting option to fend those all-mounted huge stacks that some AI ( like Justinian or Isabella ) love to build... the UB, well, too little , too late ( maybe not too little , 2 free specs is nothing to shun about, but, unless you start in one of the latest eras, the impact in game of the russian UB is minimal... maybe one more GS with some luck? + 100 :science: per turn in a time you are most likely making 4 digits bpt? )

His UU
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0083.jpg

*whips a tear, remembering sadly the times of Vanilla cossacks*

The cossack is a beefed Cavalry unit that has a bonus vs other mounted units. In other days this UU was the king of it's era, when it had 18 str and only needed Mil Trad, Gunpowder and horses to build  Even in it's double nerfed state ( only case in Civ IV that a UU was nerfed twice, unless you count with the hammer prices of Preatorians ), Cossacks are still a very useful asset if the enemy pushes a lot of mounted units, like the AI uses to do ( especially leaders like Justinian or the Khans ). And they come right in time for isolation 1st war time frame ;)

His UB
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0084.jpg

The Research institute is a laboratory that also gives 2 free scientists. Normally I love UB that give free specialists, but given the time that this UU arrives, it is dificult that the bonus given by those 2 specialists will be game-breaking or even significative ( this OFC in a ancient start game, like this one... ), so this will probably not make any significant diference in most games, even in the ones that will go to space :(

The start (Thanks to DanF for the solution of the unit change of place ;) .... The warrior/scout should appear always in the same place from now on, really :p ):
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0026.jpg

Well, well .... 6 FP + 6 plains hills + river + riverside grassland corn + gold.... this site has a huge prod potential, if you ask me ( and a early :) resource in BFC is nothing to shun about ) . Anyway there is grassland to the east and a irrigated rice, so moving the cap SE may not seem so far fetched at all ( depending of the surroundings OFC ), given the heavy :yuck: that those FP will bring...

Regarding the saves ( if you're using DanF change to the WB files load, skip this ): given some complaints about the efects of the AI starting without archery in high levels ( giving a unfair advantage to AI that have early UU and/or have early warmongering tendencies ), I decided to make 3 WB saves ( all in the same zip file ). The WB saves are equal except for the fact that one of them ( labeled Monarch ) has all of the AI with archery as starting tech ( corresponding to a game started in Monarch ), one ( labeled Immortal ) has all of the AI with archery, hunting and agriculture as starting tech ( corresponding to a game started in Immortal ) while the last is the corresponding to a game starting in Noble ( labeled Noble ). All WB saves are playable in all levels, but ( for a example ) if you use the Monarch one the AI will start with archery ( and archers ) in any level. This has only a slight effect in the human directly ( mainly via the garrisons of barb cities ), but has a huge effect on the AI gaming in the outer lands ( avoiding scenarios like Pacal, Shaka or Sitting Bull to take all the barb cities and becoming moguls ). I strongly recommend the usage of the Monarch save if you want to play in Monarch+ and the Immortal at Immortal/Deity.... All the speeds are working well ( no more games ending in 1900 ) The saves are zipped... you only have to unzip this to the worldbuilder saves or for the PublicMaps folder ( either one will do ) and load it from the scenarios.

Any problem PM me...

P.S WB saves are crosscompatible between 3.13 ( and earlier ) and 3.17 ( and later ) if they don't have No Espionage ticked. No problem with the patches here :p And as WB saves are no more than text files and Vanilla and Warlords WB are almost equal, you can play this if you exchange the non-Vanilla ( or non-warlords ) stuff ( in here it will be only leaders and civs eventually )

Again a small request ( not mandatory :p ) :

We ask the participants to do, if possible, a write-up with the victory save and a description of your game ( strategies, techs researched, wars,...). All the info should be in spoiler tags ( to not disturb other people's games ). If you want ( we would like to :p ) post reports at this moments of the game:

Checkpoint 1 - when we have explored the island and are aware of what resources it has. Its not so important when this is, but this is a time to discuss city sites etc. Don't look into a checkpoint 1 spoiler until you have reached this point yourself.

Checkpoint 2 - first contact - when we have met all the other AIs. At this point we can discuss our strategy to get to this point and our plans for dealing with them.

Checkpoint 3 - when we are committed to a victory condition (or at least think we are).

Checkpoint 4 - Victory (or defeat).

The last words are to wish good luck to all :goodjob: . And let the games begin!

P.S We don't have any kind of problem with defeats and reruns. Just play and enjoy ;)

Man, I love this series! r_rolo1, please don't stop hosting it.

Well, who would had thought that I would have the patience to get here ... LHC LII with Stalin closes the first rotation to the stock BtS leaders ( except Mr Meier, that will come in 2 weeks ). As usual , have fun ;)

It means there will be a second rotation, right? :D

Marathon / Emperor - Checkpoint 1

Spoiler :

I saw the land was kind of big, so I didn't want to spawnbust all that. Instead I built the Great Wall. As I was at it, I also built Stonehenge (lost the pic of its completion). Settled St. Petersburg near the rice/cow/copper and it is my settler pump. Moscow has completed the two wonders already mentioned and the Pyramids, the Parthenon, the Statue of Zeus and started on Schwedagon Paya. After that, it will be the Great Library (still have to build a regular library) and the Mausoleum. I may build Chicken Itza just because I can. If I start getting a lot of artists, I think I'll try a Culture win, otherwise I don't know.

The techs were the wonder path - Agri, Masonry, AH (no horses ), Mysticism, the Wheel, Pottery, Writing, Aesthetics, Polytheism, Priesthood (missed the Oracle), Fishing, Literature, currently working on Sailing. (I might have missed one or two techs here). After Sailing it will be Calendar, Code of Laws, Currency, then I don't know, but will put Music soon someplace. I'm not really sure about where to settle the cities. I made a temporary dot-map, but it will certainly change - I'm missing too much grass with it. Already had a Great Prophet and a Great Spy, both settled in Moscow.

Comrade Napoleon! WOOO! I'm back in that USSR!

Will do. Now.

Noble/Epic, to 1800ish BC, Checkpoint 1:

Spoiler :
This is an AMAZING homeland. AMAZING. LHC Gilgamesh would blush at this continent!

Techpath went Agri-Wheel-Pottery-BW (copper close)- AH (no ponies!)- IW (Iron around, but not close)- Fishing (dunno)- Sailing- Writing. Pretty sloppy.

Settled Moscow in place, sent the scout on autoexplore. He becomes DOC scout, after 2 villages give him experience. He killed a grand total of three lions before he settled down in Moscow. He will be my stack healer, but that is far on the horizon.

I built lots of cool stuff (Stalin is awesome at this):

Explored the map:

Yum YUM!

I built St Pete (which is a bit of a bourgouise name):

I have no dotmap, but I will report later today. My BUG has gone on strike.

Czechpoint 2-4: (this round is HUGE) (Diplomation, 1915)

Spoiler :
Sorry, I got a bit tired with the czechpoints, and tired physically as well. So I will just post a succession of pictures. Chain capitulations are SO FUN.

1k BC, two cities, and FEUDALISM? HELLZ yeah!

Hellz yeah! Spread to Moscow and convert.

Woo! Representation! What have you to say for yourselves, slacking AIs?

Mmkay, this is getting ridiculous. Maybe I should be brave and move to Prince on LHCs... Lovely Pacifism! Not very Stalin-esque but handy!

Nice! Nine gold/turn, not spectacular but handy!

Moscow is getting ridiculous now...

We iz big!

Losers! LOSERS!

They did almost stop us from settling the peninsula, though, not helpful...

Too easy:

And MUCH later (embarrassingly, for me and AIs, later):

Again, embarrassingly late:

Even more embarrassing, this is pathetic:

Et

Hopeless. But not Popeless- the AI built the AP very late.

More wonders:

And AI number one, guess who???????

You guessed it!

Nice techs there, Tokers. Have fun being crushed by Cossacks later.

My luck is boundless:

Finally! Someone sane! Plus he is Monty's master. But.... he's still not great.

Next!

Mmm... Zealot burger.

NEXT!

NEXT!

Wii-woo! Stalin likes!

And those are the AIs. Lots of boring peace, so I will cut to the chase here:

Die Toku die! I took three cities and he bowed down to me. I gave one city back.

I also wanted another leader to bow down to me (no vulgarity intended)- Boudica!

Summary: Took three cities, she capitulated, I gave them back (all wonders in them were obsolete).

Next on the chopping block? After Industrialism, ALEX! No pic for some reason, but the summary: took five cities, including Athens, capitulated, gave 2 back.

It seemed sealed. Just Just left, and I would have enough votes to have the world under my iron fist.

It was sealed:

Another reason I love Cossacks: they can be mass-produced to have an inflated power graph.

It was sealed with ease:

And as the Tanks rolled forward to crush the madman Montezuma, the UN Council for World Power declared Comrade Napoleon the first President for Life of the newly formed Soviet Republic of Earth, or SRE in a suprise decision. Comrade Napoleon, newly renamed Comrade One, began by destroying internal opposition to his rule: Tokugawa, Willem van Oranje, Alexander, Justinian, and (lastly and most reluctantly) Boudica were 'sent to a comrade's reeducation camp' as 'enemies of the people'. Even today, in our modern times, Comrade One is building a great, utopian, flawless society in which the brotherhood of man is the guiding instinct, and all are equal.

But, of course, some are more equal than others.

FIRST LHC win!

Normal Immortal 1515AD

Spoiler :
My first immortal game. Thanks to wonderspam, I am still in it. I am trying to pull the trigger on cultural. Two cities are far along the last will need a ton of artisits. Unless i get dog piled.

Industrious and aggressive, I just can't resist having a go. what speed, Hmm, I may stay with normal speed, as I'm getting a bit sick of the marathon games, plus not as much time on my hands lately.

Will I go back to the previous games, probably not, as I've lost a lot of interest in them. I've also lost all the previous saves, as I re-installed the game, sorry Rolo.

What a start! I'll try playing this as soon as I can.

Does anyone see a bunch of red xs in my post, or do they work?

CHEESE, I see no xs.

Marathon / Emperor - Checkpoint 2

Spoiler :

Justinian. On the lead. Again. Alright, forget culture. No matter how many artists I get, I'll smash that little sun of a beach. Kept going with the wonderspamming. I don't know why Prt Scr didn't work again, but I also completed the Schwedagon Paya. Two more golds popped in Moscow and I didn't like it this time. I want production, not commerce now. Got Lib before meeting anyone. Justinian and Boudica have enough on their hands. I'll finish building my universities/observatories/oxford and rush to rifling/military tradition. I'll sell Trotsky if I have to in order to get horses. Byzantium will join our sphere of influence!

Deity/normal, checkpoint 1 (50AD)

Spoiler :

I settled in place, went agri-BW and worker to hook up corn and gold. Settled my second city near the copper, and the third on the fur/fish. Fourth was for stone, and fifty is a barb city I got. I'm about to get a sixth city from the barbs, and will probably backfill another 3 cities or so once I get CoL.

I did a bizarre tech route, beelining music early (before currency  whoops). Also got GL fairly early and put NE in the capital as a proper GP city would take forever to build.

Civ4ScreenShot0061.jpg

I just finished currency and am now teching towards col. Hopefully I can bulb philo (GS in ~7 turns) and then use pacifism to blitz through liberalism--astro (probably). There have been some early wars, and I think there's an industrious civ out there as SH went in 2600 BC.

I avoided most barb problems from spawnbusting using a scout and warrior  Worked like a charm. Got HE unlocked as well, so things are looking good so far.

This is a big island - may be able to get space just with this land.
Civ4ScreenShot0062.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0063-1.jpg

I've also been running lots of scientists and haven't teched monarchy. I will probably go towards CS first and backfill monarchy as most of my cities are at the :) cap.

Immortal normal.
1854 AD

Spoiler :
I give up!

Willem defeated me. I did get dog piled. I absolutely blew diplo in this game trying to be friends with Boudics. I got dogpiled by everyone but her for my trouble. I survived it but Willem took two cities on my contintent and declaed on me late with paras and arty against my rifles/cannons.

I feel like I could have one if I put just a little more thought into it. I knew as soon as first contact was made that I was doomed because I couldnt figure out the diplo.

Deity/Normal No Events

Checkpoint 4 - 1675 AD

Spoiler :

Settled in place. I went AG ----> mysticism, tried for henge, missed it, tried for Gwall, got it, tried for oracle theology, got it.

Uh oh.

I also grabbed mids after oracle then finally started expanding . It didn't matter though. I won the second I hit theology that way.

Civ4ScreenShot0004.jpg

I kept everyone out of wars pleased or better (and they all had dislike of someone else by at least one disposition level). The only thing left after that was how to win the votes. I considered Willem but a lot of people hated him and spreading it there would be hard. I settled on Boudica (US) and Justinian (NSR Theocracy). A little bit longer and I could have had toku's vote too (OB, fair trade, resources, peace) if the game went a little longer.

I actually gifted gold for the fair trade. Everyone except willem was pleased at the end, and willem was monty's vassal X_X.

Yay for deity wins . However, it remains a legit VC so hell with it. With a high commerce start and IND, why not?

Marathon / Emperor - Checkpoint 3

Spoiler :

Trotsky wasn't really happy to be sold to Alexander as his personal assistant, but it was for the greater good. We could give horses to our hardy Cossacks. With this lovely neighborhood, it's difficult to do peaceful wins, so I'm going to take over the world. Any of these victories will do: Domination, Conquest, Diplomatic. I kept things moving: payed Monte to declare on Justinian (payed Justinian to make peace when he started to win), payed Alex to declare on Tokugawa (capitulated before I had the chance of getting them to have peace). Snowball effect: everybody started to hate each other and I was left alone. When it was time, I decided to avenge Genghis and declared war on Justinian. We're in the beginning of the war.

Techs aren't so bad though:

So the question is, how am I going to deal with a Monty who owns 30% of the world and has double the score of the next AI... Suggestions?

His hands are also full right now. I can only pray that it's not me as I just met him and haven't had a chance to butter him up. This is what #2 AI Alex says about Monty:

Deity's another animal, but you could pray his not after you and suck up to him. For what I hear in the forums, Deity stacks are insanes.

@ shyuhe:

Spoiler :
Mirth would say that such a situation calls for nukes. That can definitely keep monty away from more vassal power, but only if you're fast enough. Worst case gift the AI a couple tacs next to monty's SoD. 3.19 AIs are less likely to ban them, and an overpowering idiot seems to be the situation that merits them the most.

Obviously I pulled a ridiculous cheese fest for my deity win :D.

Hi

Prince, Marathon, 1392 ad. checkpoint2, settled out island and have met the other AI's.

Spoiler :
Arrrgh Rolo u are KILLING me :P.

Start look like it would be BIGTIME hammers so I just settled in place. I did some wonderwhoring and settled out my land. NOOO horseys at ALL on the flipping island grrrr. Althought I was kinda figuring that knowing Rolo hehe :P.

Mostly peace expansion went ok. I lost out to GLH and Shadwyn but got some gold out of it which helped a little. At one point though I saw OR was STILL offering a free religion so I teched it out and LOST by ONE flippin turn Grrrrrr.

But undeterred I kept on settling and expanding. teched out optics, upgraded some triemes and set off to see my neighbors.

Ugh it is BAD. AP is built on HUGE continent and ALL the AI"s on it are united. BUT that is NOT the worst. They are ALL united under Monty :(.

The little whackjob named me worst enemy pretty much as SOON as we met he went into WHEOOH mode pretyt much JUST as soon so I had no chance to even TRY to get him to friendly. And his power rating is HUGE his army is like bigger than any 3 or 4 civs COMBINED.

But THAT isnt even the worst part. Monty is tech leader. Yeah you read right not ONLY do I have to worry about that whackjob attacking he is most likely gonna be at least tech parity with his units. Probably even more since unlike me Monty HAS horsies on HIS island grrr ::glares at Rolo:: hehe :P

Here is how my empire looks:

1392empire.jpg

Tech sitch:

1392techsitch.jpg

Havent bothered with HBR since (in case I havent pointed it out yet hehe :P) I DONT have horsies :(

Monty on other hand has Horsies and is ONE turn away from GP.

I KNOW there is horsie on another lil unsettled land mast to east of me. But I doubt that will help much since I HIGHLY doubt I am gonna have time to settled and hook things up once I get astronomy. Cuz by that point Monty will have it to or at least be close to it so I will be too busy trying to fend him off instead of setting new cities.

Demos:

1392demos.jpg

ONLY important stat at this point in game is Military and Monty is HUGE.

I think one of reasons Monty is so huge is cuz he killed off an ai early since there seems to be one missing. and this:

missingciv.jpg

Doesnt look like a city alex of justi or monty would name. I think it means either BK or willie were in the game and got voted off.

So monty is HUGE, Justi is his vassal, Alex is his BFF, he is in wheooh, he alos controlls the AP, and at LEAST one holy city. Havent checked for sure but since the one he has for sure is biggest rel on map he not hurting for income either.

I really am NOT sure what to do. War with monty is a FORGONE conclusion. ALex wont help most likely since he LOVES monty and even IF he WAS willing to help AP would probably have him declare holy war on me. Justi is Monty's lapdog, and he also has me as his worst enemy so he WONT be helping.

BootyCall and Toku not exactly the BRIGHTEST leaders even in usual circumstances are BOTH isolated so they are even MORE behind than usual. NORMALLY two backwards AI's all isolated would be a NICE thing. They would be sitting ducks and I could just take em both out and then use the land to go after the big cont. But like I said I DOUBT I have time for stuff like that.

By time I get astronomy I am thinking I am gonna HAVE to hit monty first before he hits me. And having my army off trying to take out Toku or BootyCall when Monty comes by would NOT be good for me.

I dont even know how much lib will help or if I can even get to it. At this point Monty has better shot than me. I DO have 2 GE, I am PARTLY thinking Liberalism shmiberalism and just burn the GE's for gunpowder, tech STRAIGHT to astronomy while building muskets and ships and trebs and try to get a BIG army going then go and hit Monty as hard as I can beofre he hits me. Its gonna be an UGLY drawn out grind of a war and I HATE those but it seems ONLY way I can survive. And yeah I am NOT even worried bout winning right now. Trying to figure out how to live thu Jewish steamroller heading my waybeing driven by Monty seems like number one concern atm.

Grrr no horsies, USELESS AI's for allies. Either SOOOOO backwards they not gonna help in a war or for trading and the ones tha are NOT backwards are ALL united under monty and Monty is already gonna come pick on me :( . SO I dont even have time to go after the backwards civs. Plus I ahve NO horsies and doubt I will have time to try and get any so UU is out the door too.. Grrr, Rolo this map is KILLING me :P

Kaytie

Kaytie:

Spoiler :
That's a new one. Looks like Willy got himself PWNZORD. In mine it was the opposite.

@ kaytie:

Spoiler :

Being marathon, you won't hit nukes before monty beats on people to get big. You can usually direct AIs like him away from yourself but not forever, sooner or later he gets too many votes and can self-UN, not good.

If I were you I'd push lib anyway, and try to get something good, like steel. Even if you can't lib it, get cannons.

When you attack monty with a stack of cannons + some cover unit (rifles, even muskets are fine if he doesn't have cuirassers or better, w/e), there are two things which if you do right, you'll win, but if you botch either, you lose instantly:

1. Try to get people who monty can bring in against you going after other people first. Anyway, you want some degree of back protection while attempting to cut into monty.
2. Do not, under any circumstances, let his stack + siege initiate against yours + siege. This might mean capturing a city from alex's territory, pulling out, and baiting monty there. Pound his stack with cannons. Even having less power is ok if you shred enough units w/o taking losses early on.

You have my favored alternative if you last long enough, also: Infantry/Arty. Monty was quite big in my LHC vicky game (#1 land/pop) but I got to infantry/arty and fielded them just a little before he got infantry (he had machine guns though). The devastation was gamebreaking, and those units last until close to the end of the game (modern armor and such can screw you, but not much before).

The final alternative is to get a couple airships and just play naval defense. The AI is really poor at staging intercontinental invasions and with a good stack of 20+ naval units and a little air recon (or diligent WHEOOHRN checking then air recon), possibly even air strikes, you can make it nigh impossible for him to land. Do that and you'll probably win space or something, since the powerhouses in this game aren't exactly impressive while pursuing that.

Monarch, Epic: 1881 Cultural
Spoiler write-up :
I was actually at tech parity until I cut research to zero. Seems that I must have been doing something right on Monarch difficulty, despite the first three GP's being great prophets.

Went Mysticism then worker techs first. Ignored GWall and Pyramids. Bulbed Theo, Philosophy, Divine Right, Paper, Liberalism with GP's. Founded Confucianism, Christianity and Islam.

Moscow had Henge, Oracle, Minaret, AP, NE and HE.
Novgorod had Kong Miao, Parthenon, Moai and Hermitage.
St. Pete's had Nativity, GLib, Angkor, Sistine, Shewdagon, Sankore, Liberty, Globe, Oxford.
All of them had three cathedrals.

Self-researched to Democracy then shut off.

From there it was mainly watching different countries kill each other. Justinian vassalized Monty, Alex vassalized Will Orange. Boudica and Toku were behind in tech, and became my best buddies, while maintaining good relations with Alex and Justinian.

Boudica and Toku were dogpiled by Justinian and Alex at many points in the game while I just kept pressing enter and spamming Christian missionaries in Alex and Will's lands. I realized I would've won by AP cheese, but Justinian was in the way. I had bad luck with spying to get rid of Theocracy as well. I just decided to hell with it and just press enter until I win via Cultural.

Near the end Toku was incensed with me because I agreed to war with him, and went into WHEOOHRN. Sorry loser, I built about 20 frigates with rushbuy to block my shores and monitor your attack. Even more fortunate for me, Justinian re-declared and took some of Toku's cities. Bwahaha.

Spoiler top cities at the end :
civ4screenshot0011.jpg

civ4screenshot0012f.jpg

civ4screenshot0013r.jpg

The reason those two are not running artists is because those cities hit the limit already, and I don't expect any more great persons until I win.
