The GREATEST Wall

Ok! ;)

Three upper left cities Quechua rushed after settling Tiwanaku, leftmost (Rome) contained Stonehenge, which popped all borders just prior to completing GW. Granted, lucky to build GW relatively late on Immortal :)

I just like how the wall is set up like it's actually made to defend against the lunatic Monty up north and QSH in the east. Also it's funny to note that they're dragging the Stone to Tiwanaku's Pyramids all the way from the other side of the nation, when there's another patch of Stone right next to it

5 cities although 2 ended up outside the initial culture border.

Well, when you look at the map. Tiwanaku is actually just across the bay from the quarry. Meaning that taking the stone by boats to the city's port is actually most likely more efficient than dragging it overland from the nearby quarry

In my newbie days I was actually of the thought that the animation had a direct correlation to the effects of the wall.

Therefor I had quite some games back then where I stalled building the wall as LONG as possible.

Think 1 game I build it around 1 AD. Spanning about 7-8 cities :)

Noble/prince level or so though.

 Me too! I think I has a game with Suli where I got like 8 inside on Prince with stone , a few hills and a ton of forests. It was HUGE! Wish I still had the save.

I just realized this last night, but I have been seeing signs of it in games over the last few weeks. On emperor, I see an effect where a large number of barbs will spawn all over the place and eventually enter your lands. This seems to happen between 2000BC - 1000BC. There are barbs around outside your borders before this, but this is when they seem to hit critical mass. This part is not new.

What is new for me is that they will stop spawning after a certain date and even though you have large tracts of land that are not spawn busted, you still wont see any barbs. I notice this because I ofetn dont rex out all my land at first. I sometime like it if barb towns spring up around me, they slow ai expansion and are good for army training and money.

The point is, by 1000BC when the wall went up, it was really too late to help me with barbs because at that point no more would spawn. Soon after I got in a war with Jaoa and did not see any wandering barbs.

I ahve notices this too and attribute this to Barbs settling their own city. If they cannot settle a city (lack of land or excessive fog busting) they will frequently attack the nearest city to claim that for their own. Once one of their cities are captured they become mad as hornets and starts spamming again.

Unless I am in the middle of a continent with lot's of land I generally do not build the Great wall for Barb protection (I do build it for the defensive GG bonus and early Great Spy though).

Slightly OT: is whining about the Ancient era default BUG mod clock some kind of inside joke here? People do that even when the pics are big enough for it to be clearly visible for everyone :p

Tell the truth, I have trouble reading it myself. Just never get around to it!

Do we get to cook the setup? I'd guess the greatest wall would be
  1. CRE leader for fast border pops.
  2. IND leader for faster construction, so you could postpone it a while and still be likely to finish first. This plus #1 means Qin Louis XIV.
  3. Choose all non-IND opponents, preferably those without either Mysticism or Mining so they take longer to get Masonry.
  4. Settler level to hamstring the AIs as much as possible.
  5. WB in some copper and stone.
  6. Stonehenge for faster border pops.
  7. Axe rush all your neighbours (carefully chosen to be wimps).
  8. Turn off barbs so you can grind out a couple of initial settlers without needing immediate escorts -- at which point the GW is only good for the GSpy points :)
More seriously though -- what settings/leaders did y'all use? I'd guess madscientist used Qin and Monarch.

Yes Qin on Monarch and I either had a start with stone or Worldbuilt it in. The point of that game was to hide behind the Great Wall and not settle any other lands, hence the early settler spam.

On our list IMP helps to pop out faster settlers and gain land. So Cathy with stone is a good candidate.

Standard, normal, emperor. I was the Dutch. I wasn't trying to make a big wall, it just happened. I am so fixated on SH/GW/Oracle that it is all I have been doing for a week.

The irony is the wall was useless when it was finally finished.

Standard, Marathon, Immortal, HC, default settings. At the time I was trying to get familiar with Immortal, probably comes as no surprise that I won that start with that Incan Cheese
