Hello all and welcome to the Immortal University! This series was started a long time ago to move a group of the forum's players to the next level. Are you ready for the U?

This is the 30th in the storied series.

We will uphold the university's traditions...smacking down the hapless AI!

Our leader this time around:
IUXXXleader.jpg

One of the most competent leaders in the AI hands. His traits are solid and the UU can make a huge difference in the late game. His UB is a resourceless transport that can enter foreign waters without Open Borders, allowing some tricks with Marines.

Here's the start:
IUXXXstart.jpg

Upholding the tradition started by TMIT, this is the first Fractal map I generated. Corn is always nice, even if it's not irrigated. Apparently there's coast next to the warrior. Maybe moving the settler is an option, depending on what moving the warrior reveals.

Huts are on this time. Events are off by default.

Copy and Paste of the doctrine:

To play, just extract the WB save file into your worldbuilder saves directory, then play it. Use custom scenario if you want some extra settings to tickle your fancy. This series was designed for people learning immortal, so most people here will be at that level or trying to attain it, although deity players are welcome also. Hell, if you want to play this on NOBLE, go ahead, but I'm not peeling off the AI bonuses. The intention of this and any other game thread I post is to get better. Play whatever level you need in order to improve. Just remember, there are immortal bonuses and that's not going to change unless you WB edit it.

If you are aspiring IMM+, try to remember to add archery back to the barbs in WB. Every time you don't, a deity AI will kill a kitten, although there are a lot of kittens so it's not the end of the world if you prefer easymode barbs .

I do request people to list their difficulty and speed. In terms of updates, well nobody follows that anyway. Post in the manner you feel comfortable. Typical comparison dates are 1 AD, liberalism, and victory/defeat, as well as any major events. If in doubt, go with that.

PS. I'm making the jump to Immortal now and was missing new episodes of this series. I talked to TMIT and he's cool with me hosting it.

Looking good. I'm thinking in place or 2N. Early :) and some decent food/production balance is solid if unspectacular. With FIN I like the riverside.

I'll settle on the elephant for a free hammer and the southern unforrested hill that's barely visible (gonna check very carefully if I'm seeing that right, though).

Spoiler :
Oops! Nothing there. Sorry for the confusion, everybody.

i'd proberly throw the warrior 1sw to see if theres any seafood to be worth moving to the coast for ... if not i'd likely settle on phants for free hammer (Elephant Camp is a fairly sucky improvement)

Downloaded and ready to go. I'm likely to settle in place if the warrior doesn't show any seafood. On the phants being financial that will be a 1f 3h 3c tile so I'd rather camp it although the extra hammer in the city is always good as well.

I wouldn't settle on the ivory since it gives us extra commerce with us being financial.

The impact of that hammer is huge, though. Game alteringly huge. You get 3 empire wide turns of headstart for speeding up the initial worker alone, and that's just the start of it.

Immortal / Normal - 1000BC
Spoiler :
I settled in place. Research was something like AH, Hunting, Mining, BW, Pottery, Writing, IW and saved.

My direct neighbors are João, Gilgamesh and Darius. Past Sumeria I found Ragnar and don't know if I'll find anyone else. As you can see, I'm pretty much boxed in:

IU02.jpg

IU03.jpg

The good part is I've secured 3 gems. I would have settled Utrecht 1SW of the gold, but Gilgamesh beat me to it by 2 turns.

I'm already sharing Hinduism with Portugal and Sumeria. João has founded both Hinduism and Judaism (not sure about the last one, it's just that he switched to OR at the same time it was founded, so I assume). Darius and Ragnar are pagan.

I stopped here because I have a question: how do rushes go on Immortal? I have Iron and Horses so I don't know if I should research HBR or Math then Construction. I think the best target is Darius because he has no religion and is not a freak unit builder like Gilgamesh. João is a little to far to rush IMO.

I have two questions:

1-Should I rush Darius?
2-What should I research?

Edit: I think we'll be in HR for a very long time here.

@ Ignorant Teacher

Spoiler :

I would rush Jao. Reason being that he is such a ridiculous rexer, that if you dont he might just steam ahead and leave you in his dust. An upshot of him being such a rexer is that his cities may be less defended than those with less cities. I know that you wont be able to keep all of his cities, but you will manage to slow him down.

To do this rushing, I would research HBR, spam stables and HA's.

All of this said, I struggle hard on Immortal, so I may be way off track.

@ Ignorant Teacher

Spoiler :

I agree we need to get more land. I've played well past you and still only have 4 cities so will need to expand elsewhere. I probably should have taken Darius out early. He will be my first target with phants/cats. Joao would normally be a prime target for me as well if I was looking to rush but he is a bit far away so for me he can wait until I've taken the Persian lands. :)

Aaaah Willem van Oranje.

My best scores came from this guy on Immortal (next to our Inca friend).

Ill start working on the game when I come back later this evening.

Spoiler :

Bit of a tough start for an immortal map. Squeezed in with few decent 2nd 3rd and 4th city spots without IW tech.

I think beeline pottery and then BW. Head towards Aest for trade and grab alphabet and trade off among AI for IW etc.

In terms of the map I do think JoaII capital is way over powered. On top of that he has room to expand. Then again if you can grab horse and catapults early and over run a Ai then you will be okay.

Weird map with so many AI squished in so close.

Loooks like a decent start, will propably settle in place.

However, I cannot open the file. How do you open rar-files?

Emp/Epic to 310AD

Spoiler :

Picked Emperor as I'm not quite confident enough to tackle Immortal. Too bad there isn't an Emperor University.

Settled in place, was pleased to discover the grassland cattle to our southeast. The other cattle would fit nicely with another city.

Early research went AH>Mining>BW>TW>Pottery>Writing>Sailing>Hunting (late I know, farmed over the Phants and whipped enough there was no happy issue. Moreover, the gold (second city) kicked in quite early).
Then I turned off research, built a library and ran 2 scientists. Once enough gold was in the coffers, >Alphabet which I traded to Darius for IW and Myst. About that time the GScientist was about to pop so I turned off research until I made an academy.
Next was Currency, no-brainer.

As I decided to not rush (we had horses), I was limited to 5 cities (the land is really good! although you need a lot of workers) I headed towards catapults and eventually elephants. I also got a nice breather when Gilgamesh decided to DoW Joao in 1300BC, having warriors for garrison.

Build went worker first > warrior to size 3 > settler > worker. Sent the first worker with the settler to the gold/Bronze/Cow spot. Tried to block a bit more but Joao the rexxer beat me to it.
Decided I'd hit Darius especially when he built the Pyramids (what a poor start for him) while heading to CS.

And so, in 310AD, the Persian Empire is no more.

Civ4ScreenShot0012.jpg

Gilgamesh is in WHEOOH. He might be coming for me. Sadly for him, I decided to go for him next, building a bigger army to go on Joao next.

My stack, with my Persian-war veterans selected.
Civ4ScreenShot0017.jpg

There's some yellowish border north of us but haven't found the time to scout pretty much. I've almost finished Paper so I can get maps soon. Scouting is one of my big flaws, I always forget. I should build a or two chariot and set it on auto .

Civ4ScreenShot0013.jpg

Domestic Advisor - been whipping a lot. Probably could use more farms though. Growth is kinda stagnant.

Immortal/normal, 875BC

Spoiler :

I've just reached the end of the REX stage, with 5 cities settled, and space for another city in the middle. 2 scientists are working in the capital, and the gold is keeping up the science, but I'm building workers for more cottaging. The short-term goal is to build an army and kill Darius. Because of this I'm researching Mathematics on the way to cats, but I also need Iron Working for the jungles, and for the gem happiness. Swordsmen wouldn't hurt either.

Immortal/Epic 25 AD

Spoiler :

So I now know why I never play with huts on.
You get way to important techs for free, if you are lucky

Spoiler :

First 3 and only huts, 2 techs and 60 gold.

Map is extremely tigh. 2 nice city spots to the north, 1 blocking city to the east.
I quickly tech to IW because of tight city spot, 3 gems with jungle + rice, and no copper in my borders.

hunting/mining/BW/IW/pottery/writing.

I start building a big army, with 3 gems, a massive prod capital and 7/6 happy cap's in 4 decent prod cities.

I wanted to go for Gilgamesh, simply because I do not like the biggest backstabber of all next to me when I am warring another civ.
But the choice has been made for me and

So you want to have war, you get it.
Wiped 2 big stacks of Gilg and now its my turn

Another sexy target after Gilg.

But first things first.
3 more cities to go, now with construction under my belts and cata's.

and overview of current status
Spoiler :

Immortal/normal - 1ad

Spoiler :
I settled in place. Research went like AH, Mining, BW, then found out I didn't have copper, panicked and went hunting and Archery. Didn't think so researched IW to be able to clear the jungle even though I couldn't build cottages yet :crazyeye:
Then Wheel and pottery, writing and Aesth. Really should have gotten pottery sooner, but meh...
Civ4ScreenShot0090.jpg

Managed to settle 6 cities, 4 of them being really nice, while 1 claims incense and makes me able to sail through the continent while the other might get a little production. Gil beat me by 1 turn to a nice riverside spot with gems
Civ4ScreenShot0088.jpg

Build Zeus Statue in Amsterdam for the kicks, but It also might help me with the culture war against Gil. Researching Lit for GLib.

My power rating is not all bad, but I kinda fear a backstab from gil. My first target will def be Darius when I get cats/phants though.

Civ4ScreenShot0092.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0089.jpg

Btw anyone know which of these AIs that declares at pleased? I know Ragnar and Gil does (he always plays like he's hyper aggresive.. freak!!), but what about Jao? Darius is a no factor in my game.

Emp/Epic to 1716 AD Conquest Victory

Spoiler :

Not much to say... from my previous post, headed to Lib while backfilling the lower half of the tech tree.
Turns out Gilgamesh never got the chance to DoW me, I took all his cities except one, planning to finish him in 10 turns. He however vassaled to Joao.

Traded for maps, found out Ragnar, Joao's war nemesis. Joao grew quite strong actually. I bribed him to peace twice. Still, he vassaled Ragnar. No biggie.

Took Nationalism from Liberalism in the 1000s, then headed straight to rifles after getting the Economics GM (gold mission for 100% slider).

Drafted about 20 rifles then declared on Joao/Gilgamesh/Ragnar. Ragnar broke free so I cap'd him and then Joao cap'd instantly.

I had not quite enough for Dom so I DoW'd Charley. Sensing this, I had started building (read rush-bought) about 20 East Indiamans.

Took 4 turns to Cap him.

Civ4ScreenShot0002.jpg

Still not enough. Had already sent half my force to Hammy.

Civ4ScreenShot0000.jpg

Dow in 1685 and it's all over in 1716, after he caps.
Civ4ScreenShot0001.jpg

Started out as a "cottage-economy" but then switched to mostly farms with the intense whipping/drafting.
Civ4ScreenShot0002.jpg

Fun game, was a bit nervous in the beginning seeing Joao's techpace and # of cities but having Gilgamesh and Ragnar keep him busy while I teched to a lead made it easy in the end.
Civ4ScreenShot0004.jpg

I must say Willem is one of my favorite leaders (as with all other Cre :) ). His UU helped me win faster (although at that point I just rush-bought them all so galleons wouldn't have made it that much harder) and the UB came in too late to help.

I kinda failed to have a GP farm all game long, making Lib quite slow, and thus the end date.
