Veni, Vidi, Vici - I came, I saw, I conquered - Julius Caesar
A Beyond the Sword v3.19 PBEM game. Conquest the only possible victory and using the Tectonics - Lakes mapscript.

Rehost for September '09

Entry to this game is now by invitation only. However those who do not receive invitations can request one by posting in this thread and fulfilling all of the following criteria. Those who do not satisfy all the conditions will not be considered for the game.

Conditions of entry:
1. To request an invitation to this game you must demonstrate that you are a reliable PBEM player or a well-established member of the CFC community. If you have participated in a PBEM game previously, please post a link to at least one such game so I can verify that you take your turns regularly. If you are a long-time member of CFC (you joined either at least 2 years ago or have made upwards of 400 posts) then you needn't have played any PBEM game before.
2. Turns will be taken every two days. If you have a job or anything else which requires that you go on frequent trips or spend a lot of time away from your home or wherever you play civ, then please do not sign up. For the game to be successful we need players who reliably take their turn during their allocated times. I do of course allow for vacations and so forth but it is absolutely imperative that if you are going to be absent from the game for more than a couple of days you let us know or take responsibility for finding a substitute player while you are gone. Players who are absent for 5 days or more and have not made any attempt to contact any of the players in the game will be replaced.
3. In your post you must also indicate two important things: (a) what timezone you are in, and (b) what times of day you are able to take your turn (remembering that you will be taking a turn roughly every two days most of the time). By requesting an invitation to this game you are also committing to potentially spending well over a year participating in this game.
Game settings will be same as last time:
Settings:
Tectonics - Lakes (30%)
Aridity: Normal
Small Map
7 Human players
Starting Era: Ancient
Normal speed

Aggressive AI (in case we absolutely have to replace a player with an AI)

Victory Conditions:

I've also been wondering whether Advanced Start might be worth trying. What do people think?
Nawww - lets play from 4000bc.
No City Razing
No Tech Brokering
Are you married to both of these? No city razing will mean you cannot go on a burn and pillage attack. And no tech broking isn't much fun with all the diplo haggling over techs. I think it is better to make it a pure mano v mano game where everyone has to tech their own stuff.

I'll play whatever settings you end up with! It's all a learning experience anyhow. :)

:p Yeah I'm married

Tech brokering I'm happy to turn off. Come to think of it I think that'll be a good idea. I'll remove it from the OP.

However, no city razing I think is a good option for multiplayer. The fact you can't just go on a city razing spree is almost exactly why I think it's a good idea. How fun is it to have your best cities simply razed? It makes it harder for empires who have a lot of coastal cities and it's usually pretty unrealistic anyway. No city razing makes early warfare to eliminate another civ a lot more difficult as well, or at least more costly.

It might even make it more preferable to go on pillaging attacks, which I think would add a bit more in way of tactics to warfare.

no problem. So, it is 'I came. I saw. I captured. I had to keep the crappy city!!!' :D

I'll try to place only GOOD cities! :)

Well if Ruff's not going through with Rivers Run Red (hinting with a sledgehammer), then I'm short of an aggressive game....

I'm GMT-5, and can play pretty-much any time during the day. If I last long enough though, I would likely need to find a sub for June & July of next year. I'm in games with both Ruff & MC-RED at the moment, so they can speak to my reliability.

Yeah - he is utter crap!
Spoiler :
Ok, seriously, Dreylin is reliable when it comes to playing his turn. And he puts up with me kidding around
Spoiler :
Now, Dreylin's correct response here is ... "What are you ... 6!"

Ok we are now waiting for just one more player. I'm hoping the game launch will be much more successful this time round.

By the way, I'm almost certainly going to order the players so that the turns will roughly take 2 days at a time. But I'll decide for sure once I have the final player signed up.

No....7

It might be necessary to have an added rule that there are no DoWs for 10 or 20 turns or so. It's unlikely but it is possible for two civs to be a bit close together and it would suck to get DoW'd if you rolled a civ that doesn't start with a warrior.

What do people think of 20 turns?

I like to join. Have been playing PBEM for several months and can say that I am reliable player. Players like Ruff can confirm this.
GMT+1. Available daily from about 10:00-22:00, 18:00-22:00 preferred.

I see you've been PBEM'ing for a couple of months now Deztro so that's ok - you can join. :)

Attached is the rough turn order. The only question now really is whether Dreylin or ruff_hi are more likely to be able to take their turns later in the day.

As all of you will be able to see, some of you have not much time after you receive the save to send it on. Perhaps I can ask most of you to give priority to this game over most other PBEMs as the time is tight.

It'll be really awesome if we get 1-day turn-arounds but I'm guessing we'll often get 2-day turns.

Does anyone have any final comments? Does anyone disagree to 20 turns of universal peace? If so, speak now or forever hold your peace! (well, not forever - just 20 turns :p)

Good to see you here Dreylin :)

Can I swap with Dreylin. I am usually pretty good at playing turns in the morning but less so in the evening. That will give Dreylin all day to play his set.

20 turns of forced peace is fine by me. Just tell the Barbs too - ok?

Edit: Oh - strike the swap - just revisited the timing again and I see you have me getting it mid afternoon - that is fine. I cannot play from 7am to 6pm week days.

@Ruff: If I understand PieceOfMind's timings, he's expcting me to get it around 4-6pm our time, so you'd have it waiting for you when you got back from work (or to play on the train). If you wanted it in the mornings, you would have to move up past Deztro as well and recieve it direct from POM at ~7/8am.

@Dreylin - happy to leave it. I should get it from you in afternoon, play on train and forward when I get home. That should be fine.

I was thinking the same thing. ruff_hi if it suits you better to play in the morning it would be possible to swap above Deztro in the order. If you play the evenings, it would be ok to wait til about 11pm before sending off the save.

By the way, each cell in that table is meant to represent the hour starting at the indicated time. e.g. my bolded time suggests between 10pm and 11pm local time for me.

Remember though, it's not a big deal if it goes out to 2 days per turn sometimes - the times are just a target for best scenario.
