I'm automatically declaring war - why?

I'm playing BTS with the latest patch (3.19), and twice now I've declared war on two different opponents automatically. I just get the notification "you have declared war on so-and-so". I have no idea how it happened. Here are the things I didn't do:

1) at first, I thought maybe I hit "alt" while accidentally clicking on the leader name on the left. I restarted my game from the previous save. After a few turns, I automatically declared war on another opponent and I'm positive my hands were nowhere near the "alt" key.

2) I'm not in any kind of defensive pact.

3) I did not attack anyone's vassal or defensive partner. In fact, there are no other wars going on at all.

I'm on turn 661 of 750. I'm in second place with my score, but am about 20 turns from a cultural victory. I've looked through the forums and Googled this but couldn't find anything relevant.

Does anyone know how this could be happening?

What did you do beforehand? Did you accept a vassal they were at war with?

No, or else it would have happened from the beginning, not towards the end.

@OP
post the save, please. Hard to tell,my 1st guess was: you had always war, but obviously not the case.
There is an event that can cause that. (You declare war on someone else, nice events, nice ones)

@rolo
he told only one war, should not be the AP. I'd say the spy-insult-thingie event; that can grant tanks or make the other party declare

Nope, didn't accept any vassals. Didn't do anything or see any events that might have caused it. It just happened. This is a custom game though - I turned off espionage. YET - later on in the same game, I was told that a foreign spy was caught in my capital and I had three options. For some reason, I could only pick the third option which caused Alexander to declare on me.

So, maybe it's some kind of bug with the custom game when you turn espionage off.

lss12866, could you post a save? If you don't have a savegame from the right time you can look in the autosaves folder and perhaps find one that would be helpful.

Edit: There is the Spy Discovered event and the third option causes you to DoW:
Spy Discovered
Prereq: INDUSTRIALISM and contact with another player AND at least 4 cities AND Capital
Obsolete: ROBOTICS
Active/Weight: 60/100
Result:
1.gain 400 Espionage points AND mutual +2 Attitude modifier with other player
2.pay gold (300 base) AND gain 1 Great Spy unit
3.declare war on other player AND gain free unit support for 20 units AND +1 happy face for 30 turns AND 1 Tank unit for every 4 cities

I just tried to attach a saved game - if you see it in my post, it worked. The game is random personalities and random leader traits, so it'll look confusing. But, after you hit 'enter' for end of turn, immediately afterwords, it should say "you have declared war on Stalin" for no apparent reason.

FYI, my previous post was perhaps describing another error, that I could only choose the third option which forced me to have Alexander declare war on me. It is not the same bug as I originally described to start the thread, but related perhaps.

The culprit is described above.
Iss, just ask one 1gold from stalin.

Ahh yes, and run artists not merchants/scientists in your legendary-to-be cities.

what specifically do you think the cause was? If it was the spy-insult thing, how? I turned espionage off and took no actions, espionage or otherwise, to make that happen. Is the spy-insult thing a random event or something I need to cause by using my spies?

First, I was forced to declare war on Alexander. I reloaded a previous save to get around that, thinking it might be a bug, and several turns later I was forced to declare war on Stalin. I kept reloading from previous saves, but I kept being forced to decalre war on Stalin.

At that point, still thinking it was a bug, I went into world builder and made us declare peace. By then, my relations with others were suffering because I was declaring war on their friends, and Bodicea and her two vassals attacked me. Then I got pissed and turned the game off.

Yes, good point on the artists. I was getting lazy and just "running out the clock" so to speak, when I started declaring war on everyone.

By demanding (not trading) anything, you automatically enter into a 10 turn treaty. Do it BEFORE you declare/are declared on.

I grabbed the save, loaded it in, and war was never declared.

I ran the turns down and it eventually ended with a cultural victory (which happened faster after I set Thebes and Heliopolis to use artist specialists).

Maybe it's a bug after all, that was fixed with the unofficial patch, which you perhaps aren't using.

I had an unconfirmed bug back in warlords where I declared on someone in the middle ages without a defensive pact (which you can't get in the middle ages). Obviously, since it was in warlords, not BTS, there were no events, no apostolic palace, nothing that would have forced me to declare short of a tech I was long from researching at that point (and the AI didn't have it either). I've not been able to replicate that though and I doubt pretty strongly that it carried over to BTS.

Since the events are random dependent, the patch may use the random generator in a different way (very, very likely and it shall be), generating even one random more/less might not result in the exactly same game at all..
to isolate the issue it'd be enough to change the event weight to zero, if the war doesn't happen that's the issue.
