Options ... still under discussion..

Prince level

All Victories on

Huge, low seas, temperate, fractal

Tech trading off

Two tribes each, not set as teams.
Padded out to max with ai.

Normal barbs

normal resources

I did not go with unrestricted leaders, so no surprises expected

I have a fetish for huge maps with low seas....

If you are still reading, and still interested,
then I am looking for 3 or 4 other committed players.
I normally pad out to 18+ tribes with ai.

All options - other than the first line above - are up for discussion.
How many tribes, map shape, random, leaders, whatever.

I have previously played, and am currently playing, a number of these kinds of pbems with some regular friends...
so it can be done..

I will be playing other games with the same people - so here I am looking for a new mix of faces.

I am not exactly a novice, but have completed about half a dozen games in the Civ4 style.

My other games tend to manage between 5 and 20 moves per week.

If you are not up to managing 5 moves per week, then probably this will not work.
If you are, please post below with your preferred options.

I will play.

I am about to start hosting my first ever PBEM in another thread. But that game should be started by the time this fills up.

I can absolutely do at least 1 turn per day. Usually 2.

[map script] I like Big and Small, Normal Islands, Islands Mixed In.
[leader] I will choose if others are choosing but I normally like random.

All other settings, I have no preference and I'm okay with what others want. Map script can be whatever too; I just like to play! :goodjob:

If we choose, I like Julius [first pick] or Tokugawa [second pick]

I'll join in as well. Like you, I like my maps big. And as I said in another thread, the more civs the better. This sounds like it'll be a blast.

Bigger the map the better, marathon speed too ?

if so id be interested and would like the other Roman dude :)

if you dont mind having multiples of romans that is.

a turn a day is no problem, maybe more if all players can be online at weekends etc.

im GMT timezone

I sent you all a pm, and am collecting email addresses that way.

Now that there are four of us, we should talk options.

Chrisius, I did start one other game on marathon, but that was just too long to do anything.
we restarted on epic after just a couple of turns, as the reality sank in....

I propose we pad out to 18 tribes with ai, because i like something to beat up without guilt..

- First question is how many tribes each we want? 1,2,3 ?
With four of us, 3 each might be too many?
2 each is more interesting than 1 - more action from the start.

Then, do we want the tribes as teams from the start?
or play them independently?

The 'problem' with teams is they tend to be placed close to each other,
and it permits the strategy where one just focuses on wonders,
while the other builds all the troops.

Not teams means research is not pooled (until you have met, and researched alphabet) and makes it more interesting in the beginning. Potential drawback if a fractal map gives you archipelago and it takes until optics before you join up; whereas neighbours on a continent can share research from early on.

- Tech trading ? I have the feeling that most people block this after a few games.
Alternatives are only trading with the ai, not with each other.

- Map ? Fractal can be fun, unless anyone wants to specifically know the map in advance, or wants a particular shape.

- Advanced start? Enough cash to start with a couple of towns each? perhaps?

- Barbs? normal or vicious ?

- level? something higher than prince to give the ai a chance ?

- all victories on?

- balanced resources ? i usually go for this, although not sure it means what it says.

- any other suggestion ?

- your views on the above ?

-18 other tribes is fine

-2 Tribes per player, independent (didn't even know you did that in a PBEM game lol)

-no real qualms with tech trading, but if someone doesn't want it, I'm fine

- No opinion on the map, other then not to fond of Pangaea.

- Advanced start is fine

- Normal Barbs

- No opinion on the level. I've only played up to Warlord, but I'm not afraid to go higher

- All victories

- Regular resources I kind of like, but I'll totally understand if someone else wants balanced

- No other suggestions (off the top of my head anyways, maybe later)

updated first post with participants..

emailed everyone with email addresses...

awaiting further discussion of game options ....

btw... if everyone wants marathon speed, i'll go with that, but could be a loooong game

Okay before I post my option preferences I just want to say that whatever everyone else wants is okay for me. I'm just posting my preferences mostly so the host knows all players have spoken.

Epic speed is okay with me. Even on epic this game could take YEARS. :mischief: I mean I'd be okay with a faster speed too, but Epic will be okay.

I think two civs per player sounds solid. It comes down to 8human/10ai or 12human/6ai. I think 8/10 sounds more balanced overall.

Tech trading/brokering off preferably.

Fractal map scrips sounds like a fun variant due to the randomness involved. (could lead to slow game though)

I prefer ancient start.

Prefer normal barbs. Or off.

Prefer prince level. Or monarch. Higher is fine though.

I like all victories available.

I actually prefer to play just one tribe but willing to go with the majority,

All other settings happy to go with the game starters choices,

I do like marathon cos you get to play with your units a while but im thinking single player values of time here so epic is good.

OK,

Sorry been a bit busy...
I summarised some of the options in the first post.

Now want to focus in on:

1)
what 2 tribes and 2 leaders you want
(I assume we can have random leaders)
If you want to not tread on anyone's toes, just send me a PM for this choice.
(and I'm not sure there is anything to stop people having the same choice - I'll check)

2)
Maps
Fractal ok - so noone knows - or do we want to pick one?

3)
Resources
If we are going not balanced , and perhaps regardless, we should warn first, then call bad start in the first 2-3 turns. A year of coping with hopeless is not fun.

4)
I think Prince is high enough if Yaburu has not gone above warlord before?

5)
Now, we are agreed on Ancient era start.

However, just wanted to make sure you know about Advanced start.

Basically, we allocate cash to everyone, and you can choose what starting options you like.
One city with lots of troops, or two cities with a few troops.
This way you get to choose where your starter towns go, so it can mitigate bad starts.

The idea would be you have two towns to start , so a shorter period of opening the save, hitting the button, sending the save at the beginning.

It is generally also a requirement that we agree not to purchase techs with the cash, otherwise the first to go bag a religion.
Also needed that not too much cash is given, to prevent the ai doing the same thing.

let me know...

I like Julius & Tokugawa.

Fractal sound fun.

Either way for me with resources. Let host pick I say.

Prince level sounds good.

Advanced ancient start sounds okay. Never played advanced start before. I guess enough to get 2 cities and 3 or 4 units per civ. Or 1 city a settler and a worker and some units? I don't have experience with this. :crazyeye:

1)
what 2 tribes and 2 leaders you want
Hannibal of Carthage and Ragnar of the Vikings

2)
Maps
Fractal is all good

3)
Resources
Balanced or not balanced makes no difference to me

4)
Prince will be fine

I sent out an advanced sampler to everyone so you can play with setting up two cities.
This is not intended to be the real start.

I have the following tribe requests

Negative Suns
Julius, Tokugawa

Yaburu
Hannibal, Ragnar

ChrisiusMaximus
'theotherromandude', ?

I need one more choice from Chrisius?

I am allowing random leaders, so you can choose any leader/tribe combination.
(if the others want to change, that's fine too)

I can see I'm playing with a collection of peaceful builders, here......

you can make my other leader random, im ok with all other options already stated.

Peaceful builders, well i do prefer diplomatic games where wars are short and to the point if at all necessary between players, makes for a better game experience i feel if everyone manages to finish, and I hate it when one gets ganged up on and wiped out just because its possible.

one very interesting game idea i saw a long time back with civ4 vanilla was a game where 4 players had 2 civs each,

player A , 1st civ was teamed with player B 2nd civ,
player B , 1st civ was teamed with player C 2nd civ,
Player C , 1st civ was teamed with player D 2nd civ
Player D , 1st civ was teamed with player A 2nd civ

it makes every player a part of two alliances and prevents them using both civs together outright, would take some considerable diplomacy to form and maintain alliances and partnerships, and could see you at war with your ally with your other civ :D

sounds complicated and probably is ....

That is a fiendishly good idea.

Perhaps....

We'll see how this one goes, and perhaps try that next time?

I'll start this off later today..

I guess I'm hoping Negative Suns found the advanced sampler ok, and has some practice setting up the tribes...

Okay! :goodjob:

Sorry to miss out on the discussion. I had a catastrophe installing windows 7 this weekend. Anyways, I'm back to vista now and ready to play some PBEM.

Good luck to everyone! :mischief:

Just to clarify, what were the rules for the advanced start? No spending on religion techs? Or any techs?

Just to clarify, what were the rules for the advanced start? No spending on religion techs? Or any techs?

oops i did purchase a tech with my second civ, to get fishing boats, let me know if you want me to replay and not purchase any techs at all, I did think it was just religions you were against buying.
