Back a couple years ago, I loved Civ III, but then my disc broke. When Revolutions came out recently I've had a yearning to play Civ once again for the computer, but Civ IV is out now, and I hear that it is an entirely different game than Civ III, prompting me to wonder which I should get.

Which do you guys think is better? What are some pro's and con's of both? Any feedback would be awesome :)

This thread has been done a few times before. Being that you are asking on the Civ4 forums, I wouldn't be surprised to see a lot of voices for Civ4. :)

I personally like the civics, religions, and combat system more in vanilla Civ4 than in Civ3. Also, if you get the two expansions, you are going to have UUs, UBs, good espionage, and corporations.

Sorry if this is a repeat thread, but I'm terrible with forums, I couldn't find anything else on it.

Thanks for the feedback though

I like civ 4 better. The civ 4 siege weapon mechanics are a bit strange and perhaps unrealistic/unintuitive, but I think they are probably more balanced than in civ 3. That's about the only issue I can think of that might make someone prefer civ 3. Civ 4 (+ BTS) has a lot of cool new features that keep games varied and fun.

Are you a micromanager?
Are you a modder?

Guys like Rysmiel and T A Jones have a lot to say about CIV III. You should try the same thread in the CIV III forum.

Personally I think that the Beyond the Sword CIV Complete edition is the greatest civ version ever.

depends what type of fun you are looking for. iv been myself a civ III addict for 3-4 years, but currently a bts cIV player.

if you want to develop skills or are planning to have a career at cemetery management, go for civ III. Optimal city placement/infinite city sprawl is a nice way to understand the proper ways to space out gravestones in a cemetery, so i noticed.

if you want strategic city placement, and build up each city in a memorable and personalized way, buy bts.

The Civ 4 forum has come to the conclusion that Civ 4 is better. Surprising, really.

:goodjob:

I first got Civ4 when it came out and coudln't get into it, I went back to number three for a bit. Once I was able to wrap my head around the new bits and pieces I found 4 to be the more entertaining game and haven't touched my 3 disk in years.

At first I didn't really like Civ IV as much, but it really is a lot better.

My favourite addition is Great People which I think is a brilliant concept. I'd definitely miss that if I had to go back. Also the health and happiness systems are really good in comparison to the old methods.

One thing I preferred in Civ 3 was the simpler graphics so I could play it comfortably on my old PC. I was a little disappointed with the 3D engine especially its speed. Now I've got a decent computer though it does look nicer.

Is the Civ IV Complete pack as cheap in the US/rest of the world as it is in the Uk? You can get it for a fiver here from Play.com. Can't go wrong with that sort of price.

What's really suprising is that the civ3 guys haven't started a flame war yet. Of all the civ3 vs. civ4 threads, this is by far the most civilized.

Now that I posted that, I'm sure that's about to change.

CIV4 Complete is about 16-19 € here in Finland. I have only vanilla, but gonna get the complete. Since I haven't found any BTSs in shelves.

One and the only one Civ3 features I miss in CivIV is "culturaly close start" - that is when you start as Greek, your neibors are likely to be Romans and Persians but not Native Americans.
It surely reduce randomness but I feel should still be available as an option.
Or it is and I simply could not find ??

If you want this it's a simple matter to play scenario/maps with culturally close civs that are even correctly placed on a world map.

If you're not playing a world map I don't really see the point - you've already deviated so much from history anyway so why not have US getting owned by Gandhi with nukes?

Perhaps because this is on the Civ4 forum you would expect a bias. Perhaps in some place like OT or All Other Games you could find less bias.

I like both but, to be honest, Ive moved on to 4 and dont really see myself going back. 3 was epic for me at the time but...
