Hello all and welcome to the Prince Clique. The series started a while back and stopped suddenly as many people were disappointed with the quality. It has come back again with better screenshots and a WB Save.
Our leader this time around

Civ4ScreenShot0114.JPG
Peter is the best Russian leader for economy. His Philosophical trait allows for quick Oxford and an easier Specialist Economy. Expansive helps with health and quick graneries and workers. Play an economical game with Peter.

The Unique Unit
Civ4ScreenShot0115.JPG
The Cossack is the Russian replacement for Cavalry. It enjoys fights with cannons and other mounted units. It gets +50% vs. Cannons. However, it loses some value due to it's fairly late come into the game.

The Start

Civ4ScreenShot0118.JPG

Map is:
Spoiler :
1. Standard
2. Continents
3. Temperate
4. Medium Sea level
5. Standard Resources

This is a pretty typical Map type for most players.

The Save (World Builder, as promised)

There are no hard and fast rules here: fun and learning are our primary goals, but we do request that you update your progress at various points in the game, using the Spoiler feature of the boards.

Tentative posting updates are suggested at:

4000 BC (starting thoughts, no spoiler required for that discussion)
1000 BC or so (how you decided to progress up the early tech/build paths, which AIs you have met, where you're thinking of putting cities, etc)
500 AD or so (after establishing some cities and a possible plan of action)
1200 AD or so (mid-game, Lib race, wars or peace, or whichever happened or didnt, met other continent if applicable, etc)
1600 AD (or when you have decided on a course of action and a specific victory condition)
End of game (Victory!!! or defeat, no shame in losing, especially if you tried a higher level. Learning is what we focus on, not fastest win or biggest empire)

Remember, these are only guidelines. What we really want are your thoughts as the game goes on, so if your strats don't fall into line with those dates, feel free to adjust your reports accordingly.

We also welcome players to ask for specific game advice, as we have a number or stronger players who lurk and help out with solid tips, and of course, we help each other. Replies to specific questions should also be in spoilers, with a simple "@" in front of the person the answer is directed towards. (Copied from Nobles Club as it applies to all series')

Let me know as host if the quality has improved or what else I should add to the series. I could not get Photobucket screenshots as every time I try to join a "Serious Error" occurs. Sorry, but they are better than standard thumbnails. I did get a WB save this time. I will try to improve this series every time if you all could gice me some advice. Hopefully, this will be a great game for the Civving community! :D

It enjoys fights with cannons as it gets +50% vs. them. However, it loses value due to it's late come into the game.

You got some things wrong...

The UU gets a special bonus against other Cavalry. Also, I don't think cavalry come late into a game, unless you're playing some marathon rookie-fest.

Settled in place. Moved scout 2NE. Tech path is Agri/Wheel/AH/BW/Writing
Civ4ScreenShot0121.JPG My neighbor sighted at turn 4. Turns out he is extremely close. This could only mean one thing. Chariot Rush! :D I continue to place fogbusters and road to my next city site near the floodplains.
Civ4ScreenShot0122.JPG He took my floodplains! I guess you gotta expand faster if you want the good spots. I get bronze working and What do you know! There are no horses in the field of view. I get my garrison warrior and scout the few flat tile were horses could be. Zip. There is a source of copper within the view. This makes my plans an axe-rush instead. This will be a later rush due to commotion. I tell myself that I am willing to go out of my way for that copper! After all, If I end up conquering Hoonanny, than it doesn't matter if I settle around him. ;)
Civ4ScreenShot0123.JPG Next post will be at 1AD.

I assume this is a Prince level joint. I think I'm starting to consider myself at this level so this is cool.

I'm not sure I like the name Prince Clique. Sounds kinda goofy. Needs some consonance. How bout:

PRINCE PROFESSORIAL

I think the point on Cossacks is on line with say Muskemen. There lifespan is rather short depending on game speed.

I'm going to try this one on marathon. I don't play that speed much. Also, I don't think I've played a game as Peter. Definitely not a full game. He general is a fairly strong rival AI.

Has a bull pen been created for this series?

Okay it's not to 1AD but I have a question.

Spoiler :

Civ4ScreenShot0124.JPG
I instantly get workers up there and hook up that much needed copper.
Civ4ScreenShot0125.JPG
Ehh... I usually don't know what to say when an AI asks for Open Borders unless I am planning a trade route. Not with a warmonger! :D I decline.
Civ4ScreenShot0127.JPG
 I am used to no barbs so I unescort my settler into the spot. He died.
Civ4ScreenShot0128.JPG
I switch to slavery. Meanwhile I am pumping out axes. Grew out of happy cap, so it's time to convert food into hammers.
Civ4ScreenShot0129.JPG
I was expecting that. He got a border pop on my farmed flood plain tile. I'll have to stick with 2 pop for a while.
Civ4ScreenShot0130.JPG
I'm going for this with 13 axemen. I did not scoat him out because I was afraid that open borders would give him information about my stack. I'll attack into the fog against 3 cities...
Civ4ScreenShot0131.JPG
Wha...? The war declaration cut's off my copper supply as the enemy city was in the middle of the route. I doubt I'll need more axes, but you never know. I needed to take that city anyway.
Civ4ScreenShot0132.JPG
This will be easier than I thought. He does have metal, but he didn't put it to good use. This is his capitol, his other cities will be less defended unless he starts spamming like crazy.
Civ4ScreenShot0133.JPG
After 2 turns of suprizingly easy fighting, I end up killing him! :D with 11 city raider II/III axes remaining! My question is; Should I regroup and continue building axes and DoW Ragnar before he gets too powerful?

I am playing on Monarch. You can play on Prince if you want.

I think I'll stay original with the name. Keep it consistant!

No! I completely forgot about a bullpin! Making one right away!

I guess a mission statement is needed. For instance, people flock to Nobles Club to improve at that level, although many experienced folk play it at a higher level. I play Noble at Prince currently with some success. So I guess my question is if this series is about learning to play at Prince level? Or is it just another series?

It's about the Noble ----> Prince. Also, the Prince ----> Monarch Jump. Simply put, learning and improving ones game at this level. You can play any level, it doesn't matter.

This is quite wrong. Muskets are useless no matter what speed settings you are playing. Cossacks have their uses even well after you have bombers.

Spoiler :

Well, so far the game has been somewhat of a joke, even though I had a little bad luck and HC JUST beat me to an awesome stone-site at the start. This meant I had to put a city down with absolutely no freiken food down, and basically work just a single tile for most the game just for that stone, LOL. Well, I made the sacrifice but have returned dividends many times over.

I almost lost a second great site to HC AGAIN, but this time nailed southern-east gold before him. I put my artist pollution wonders like SoZ and Sistine in there. My capital went after all the rest, and right now I have too many wonders, I went full-blown WE/SSE again, and now I am utterly unstoppable.

I really don’t know what to do from here, horses are extremely rare, and even if I can rely on Zara’s for a while, I have no other horses on the map to beat, so what is the point? I am too far ahead of everyone so I just don’t know. Maybe I”ll just sit tight and space-race or something. We’ll see. So far I don’t know who the hell is on the other continent, but unless it’s a decent sized one, they are probably quite far behind so no point in contacting them yet.

 You do have horses. It's in your resource box. I would *not* sit tight. The oversized AI gets real ugly in the Industrial Era. They will surpass you no matter how good your capitol is. I would get Military tradition--->Rifling and spam Cossacks like there is no tomorrow. Conquer your continent with your tech lead. It would be unwize to turtle with the amount of land you have.

To get a make-shift economy going. I go for pottery--->Alph Though I won't extensively cottage/farm until later.

I have decided to declare after all. Maybe not the best choise for an axe war. We will see how it goes though.
Civ4ScreenShot0137.JPG
I go for Currency now. I need to get teh ability to beg! :please:
Civ4ScreenShot0138.JPG
I took the city, but man he screwed me with chariots. I need to get spearman rolling off the lines of production.
Civ4ScreenShot0140.JPG
Fortunetly, I got alot of reinforcements up there the next couple of turns as they heal. Our AI Ragnar is getting too many chariots! I stupidly didn't build spearmen.
Civ4ScreenShot0141.JPG
Ethiopia, meh. Naww, I'm already falling behind.
Civ4ScreenShot0142.JPG
I need to get this war wrapped up, victory or defeat. Willem will settle all of my land!
Civ4ScreenShot0143.JPG
I did not take this fight, the only thing it would do is give the AI promotions. Uh uh. So, I take them away, they still attack, lost all but one in the end. Screw those Chariots!
Civ4ScreenShot0145.JPG
This was not a clean way to acheive victory. I could have settled, turlted and got my economy going. What's worth doing, is worth overdoing. I will finish this war until he lie under a gravestone. What approach do you think I should take? My $ is running thin, but I can :please: money from other civs. I might even sell tech. At this level I *might* be able to defeat him. I'm going to get axes and spears on him through whipping. I will ask for a quick peace, and betray him after 10 turns. I need to take him down. He only has 2-3 cities. But his defences can out-do my offences. What do I do?

I have played up to turn 319. If someone else wants to finish for me, go ahead, or I’ll eventually get to it myself but I don’t see a need.

To sum things up, I built or own every wonder in the game except for three that may be on another continent (hint hint). I also built the Internet project as well.

I also have many space-ship parts completed, and almost have all techs researched. I have enough population for domination win as soon as I get just a little more… terrain. Right now I am actually less than 1 percent there.

I also have the United Nations fully pre-built for a diplo win, and I also have the Manhattan project pre-built for a nuke fest.

In fact, I even have over 65 THOUSAND gold saved up, and am making about 3 thousand each turn, not to mention incredible beakers.

So… whatever victory I want here, I have them all.

Spoiler :

Alright, lib choice was simple. Nationalism, and then we added Tajs to our wonder list. In fact, I haven’t stopped building wonders in my capital. The exception being I had no choice but to build 3GD and Space Elevator in another city due to location restrictions on my starting capital placement.

To sum things up, I had been amassing many curiassers to upgrade to cav with my monster priest-economy, but stupid Ragnar decided to DoW on me with his vassal. They got the jump on me, but I didn’t know any cities. I bribed Zara into the war (though he didn’t seem to do much!). I held off with my cuiraissers vs. his knights, and then eventually we came to peace.

Finally, I upgraded all my mounted units to cavalry and decided to go for a quick STRIKE into HC’s lands. He had a couple shrines, especially the important one, and since he’s a competing wonder-builder, I decided to nerf him like no tomorrow. We DoW and….

I finally decide that having over forty UU should be good enough to take care of HC. After all, what’s the mystery answere to the universe? Fourty-Two… That’s 42 Cossacks I immediately sent into a horde of longbows and knights. Good night HC!

At this point, my priest eccon had my capital building a UU every turn, and I was still teching at an insane rate. I really should have switched to deity but I didn’t know I’d have a perfect WE/SSE spot this game.

I was quite torn on to finish off HC for good, or to vassal him after his useful cities were taken. I finally decided just to vassal because if I didn’t someone else like (idiot Ragnar) would and then I’d be stuck in a mess.

After that, I Bribed Zara to do a war against Ragnar and his vassal. Unfortunately it was just a fake war, no one did anything despite Ragnar had 40 units idling one city. I don’t know what the hell was up with that? So finally I decide to roll over with 80 Cossacks myself since Ragnar was so up on this fake war.

Whoops, that changed things, suddenly he marches all his units toward me including his big stack. I simply don’t get this AI… it doesn’t seem fair.

To make a longer story short, after fighting tooth and nail and doing all the work while Zara did nothing, I didn’t know what to do, to finish off Ragnar totally or not. I decided to get cute and leave him to just his one city which was stuck in intense culture from his vassal. Then I’d vassal him. This may have been a huge mistake, I should have just eliminated him but I wanted to extort techs from him after the vassal. This plan sure blew up in my face though…

I was expecting him to get wiped out shortly after, but to my surprise, Willem wouldn’t do anything. Even when Ragnar didn’t built any units in his city in the middle of Willem’s lands, Willem wouldn’t do anything to take him, or did Zara. I just don’t get this. Meanwhile I was the one getting hit by billions of units. Geeeze…

Well, I finally was able to have the option to vassal Willem too, but I wanted to get one more city, and then vassal him for culture defense against Zara’s UB.

THIS PLAN BLEW UP IN MY FACE!

Because I delayed just 1 turn, Zara decides to Vassal Willem and now I got stuck in bad spots with my units on the wrong side of his units. And to top it all off… now I got a useless 1-city vassal that is doing nothing for me anymore, and no one will put him out of his misery. I kept demanding tributes from him trying to break off Ragnar, but the idiot never backstabs me WHEN I WANT HIM TO!

Needless to say, but god damn amazing mico-management of military tweaking, I was just able to get a save from almost losing one city from that backstabbing pounce. After that… well… I took my time building wonder after wonder in the capital still while I took out Willem AND Zara. In fact, I was willing to make a temporary peace-deal just to get a tech out of Zara, but he wouldn’t give me Physics, so fine, I just eliminated him outright (what an idiot!) The guy was willing to vassal, but wouldn’t give me a simple tech?

No big deal, as my SE economy was able to tech physics in just 3 turns, so who really cares.

End of story I built no cottages, (oh except for one on a tile that I couldn’t possibly farm and I had to be stuck working it since there was no god damn freiken food in that JUNK-CITY next to stone.

Current situation on the other continent has Japan attacking the Chinese AGAIN. I stopped the last one with the AP, but since I have obsoleted it now, this option won’t come up. I don’t think they can even last a few turns like this, every unit I see of Japan’s is in fact a large STACK of units marching into Chinese lands like hordes. So this should be attended to with some bribing now.

WE/SEE at its finest. Even with slider at 0 I'm making almost 700 beakers a turn, and I have more power in this capital than all the AI's combined on both continents combined.
