Hello all and welcome to the Immortal University! This series was started a long time ago to move a group of the forum's players to the next level. It is now hosted by professors Ignorant Teacher and myself, TMIT. Are you ready for the U?

This is the 38th beatdown on the AI, in case you're keeping track.

We will uphold the university's traditions...smacking down the hapless AI!

Our leader this time around:

Civ4ScreenShot0006.jpg

Hasn't seen a lot of forum action lately. Your stuff is late but your traits are pretty good. As long as you don't self starve off pollution like the AI will do on occasion, you should have a chance.

Here's the start:

Civ4ScreenShot0007.jpg

Every time I see a cow now I shudder a little. Too many "plains cow with no other food" starts recently. However, fortunately that is not the case here.

As usual, this is the first Fractal map I generated. It looks like a decent start, but we'll have to see what the surrounding lands hold.

Huts and Events are off werd.

Copy and Paste of the doctrine:

To play, just extract the WB save file into your worldbuilder saves directory, then play it. Use custom scenario if you want some extra settings to tickle your fancy. This series was designed for people learning immortal, so most people here will be at that level or trying to attain it, although deity players are welcome also. Hell, if you want to play this on NOBLE, go ahead, but I'm not peeling off the AI bonuses. The intention of this and any other game thread I post is to get better. Play whatever level you need in order to improve. Just remember, there are immortal bonuses and that's not going to change unless you WB edit it.

If you are aspiring IMM+, try to remember to add archery back to the barbs in WB. Every time you don't, a deity AI will kill a kitten, although there are a lot of kittens so it's not the end of the world if you prefer easymode barbs .

I do request people to list their difficulty and speed. In terms of updates, well nobody follows that anyway. Post in the manner you feel comfortable. Typical comparison dates are 1 AD, liberalism, and victory/defeat, as well as any major events. If in doubt, go with that.

The save!

The initial autosave for those who want to duck barbs or possibly use proper colors. It's IMM/Norm no huts/events.

So I am back finally after a horrible uni quarter, also by frustration of Gumbolt :), and its still busy.

However I managed to push some time in to quickly play to 10 AD on epic.

Spoiler :

I moved settler, and start to expand as mad with organised trait under my belt.

First I felt isolated, but after sending some workboats I managed to contact all the civs.

First Scientist has popped and settled, next Scientist is almost finished.

7 cities now, 8th settler has almost reached his enddestination, and 2 galleys are ready + 1 settler under construction.
Things look quite favourable now, though my tech is a bit slow but that happens often with me and the germans since you need all techs especialy on this map.

Of course I played it.

IMM/Normal (the autosave)

1930 space

Spoiler :

Settled in place. I've been playing with building priority and moved the granary up. Way up. In front of monument unless the latter is absolutely mandatory.

The expansion rate this allows with new cities getting to 2 pop whip cycles is incredible. A lot of units can be created too if necessary. I abuse my pop to expand quickly. ORG helped out but it was mostly a cottage orgy.

Recognizing marble, I at least bothered to pick up great library before trading that tech line. Along with NE, that would be my only wonder for a long long time (but not forever this game).

AIs delayed edu a long time allowing me to snag a decent lib tech. With the faster developing cities compared to before my beaker rate took off beyond what I'm used to. The GPP I did get came from my wonder mostly and allowed me to make an academy, bulb philo (founded religion), bulb education, bulb PP, bulb chemistry, bulb biology (also got a GS off physics). Aside from that diversion, we were all cottages in this one. At least until the late 1800's.

I went the full bottom civics, but screwed up and got my GEs too late. The hammer corps were taken and so I had to try to build the space ship with just environmentalism workshops/mills . We also lack coal!? So I made a rare play for TGD and got it easily ($$$ rush). Later on after winning internet soundly (even though it took 19 turns to build) I also $$$ bought space elevator (2 AIs happened to get robotics eventually). The ship still took forever. I launched in 1910 with 1 of everything except 5 casings. 100% survival chance...20 turn travel time . I'd have lost time waiting for more thrusters.

As you can see, Vicky pressed culture. Vicky got a top 3 culture city nuked/razed (I'd built the panzers in case anyone attacked ME actually), and then I followed up with a land invasion and nuke/raze hastings on the same turn. Her new #3 city at 20k got triple nuked and that was that considering there were only 14 turns left in the game. SB had his #3 city at 30k, but nowhere near a rate that could get 20k in <20 turns.

Everyone else was painfully behind in tech as there was a lot of infighting in this game between AIs.

As I still struggle bigtime at Immortal, perhaps I will try this.

OK, I am going to try and play this game out over a few days looking for advice. I aim to try and win this for once, tired of too many half finished or lost Immortal game.

Up to 2400 BC

Spoiler :

Standard start. We have grassland, hills, irrigated corn and grassland cows. The only issue with the start is fresh water in the lake so if we settle in place we lose any future levees, something I really detest. However, I tend to trust the computer's positioning, and I have yet had it give me a very bad capital unless we are 1 off the coast which is not the case. Besides, the capital on a hill protects us a big from Barbs and phsycho aggressive leaders. First though I sent the scout eastward. What he found confirmed settling in place

IUFredA0000.jpg

Looks like a potential city on the desert to claim wheat and cows. Health look to be of little concern as 2 grains with a granery, plus no jungle.

We get to work as follows

1) Our scout explores the land, bitterly disappointed that cheap TMIT refuses to grand us Immortal U students any stipends from goody huts. Looks like I got alot explored and I have learned to favor starting with hunting on Immortal games.

2) Techpath went according to the land
Agriculture - irrigated corn
Animal Husbandry - Moo.... We found the horses in teh NW and we send an early warrior there to secure it.
BW - for axes/spears/slavery/chopping - adopted slavery immediately after researching
wheel - to build roads as it's the base economic tech, open up pottery, build graneries to whip, connect horses and copper (which is nicely in Berlins big fat cross).

3) Build, was fairly simply: Worker/ 5 warriors for fogbusting/ settler

I saved once I got the settler to see if everyone agrees with my first choice of cities

IUFredA0002.jpg

As you can see I have anough warrior fogbusting to prevent Barb cities from popping up. Obviously the souther Jungle could be a source though.

Sites I am considering, in this order

A) South, 1W of the marble to start cottaging. The marble means I think I want Aesthetics/Literature early to get the Great Library.

B) The eastcoats desert to get mines, wheat, cows, fish

C) Northern Plains hill for the Fish and horses

D) SW coast for the corn and coastal city.

E) Far west for another coastal city and cows.

I also need to explore the southern lands to see if we are in fact isolated. Sue is nice having the mountains blocking the SW land off!

Techwise, I think writing next and will decide how far I go before another posted round.

Alright, I am ready to give this one a try. 2 very strong deity traits, this should be an easy romp I think...

Immortal / NSC

Start --> 1000 A.D.

Alright, it’s just around midnight this Friday night. Ooops, make that Saturday now! I am taking a little break at exactly 1000 A.D. to post my current stats.
Spoiler :

I was quite disappointed to find out we were on an isolated map. Then I find out later we aren’t, it’s just that stupid mountains block passages. That’s good in away because it causes the AI’s to get locked into perma-weehorn status which CAN be a huge advantage if you are the one who the AI is going to DoW on. I think I’m going to abuse this bug to the fullest if the opportunity arises.

Anyhow, I have a tremendous tech-lead at this point, and I am 2 turns away from liberalism. I also am 2 turns away from completing UoS, though I am not running any religion yet to make it work! LoL.

I had god terrible luck with religion this game. I opened borders as soon as possible and I got nothing, nothing at all, forever. Also I was very late scouting out where SB and Vicky were, because I THOUGHT they were just south of me (boy was that hypothesis way off!) So in other words I gave them free routes for ages while I got absolutely nothing back in return. That sucks.

Right now I have landed spies and scouts on the other side of that mountain passage, so I can see in detail the status on my POTENTIAL victims. I guess they are so weak at this point, I can’t resist plowing into them later. I do have iron and horses so that’s all I need, but there is one hitch… I only have 1 powerhouse city, and that’s my capital, the other cities are just… very intermittent. In fact, I went through the pain of barb-farming off a city down south for the longest time to unlock my HE, but now I see there really is no suitable city for it!! I’m probably best just putting it later into a future city on the other side of the mountain passage. That means the barb-farming was for nothing, lol.

There is no good spot either for my globe theatre, and I had even gone through the states of going after theater very early and getting them online. Well… what else can you do. I would have had a nice spot if I didn’t MOVE my stating settler at the binging, but how would I have known about the god -damn fish, etc. in the N-E that could have made a great draft city and now I block it because my capital is too close. Argggh!

Oh well, I am not too upset because I succeeded in making my capital a powerhouse with another WE/SSE. Unfortunately, no stone or Mids, and not the most trees in the world meant I decided to skip Pyramids as it would have taken FOREVER!

I really think I should have gone Oracle-Mids gambit here, but it just didn’t occure to me at first because I always bypass this trick on deity since the success is so low.

BTW, I wonder-failed Mausoleum and Sistine on purpose since I really won’t be using them for anything and their artist pollution sucks. Actually, I was close to 50-50 on that Mausoleum because of future Taj synergy. I don’t know… maybe it is better than I give credit for. But I’ve always tried to stay away from it.

So… looks like this will be another all-nighter Friday-night type of thing. Will get back probably when the sun is up, and see how things turned out from here. My first priority will be constitution, and if you don’t know why, then you should not be playing immortal.

1000 A.D. To EndGame
Spoiler :

I’ll keep things simple.

Started off with a ferry-train to SB’s continent. Stockpiled units and then DoW. Took 2 cities, made peace then re-Dow 10 turns later and take 3 more, then Vassal.

I teched to railroad got some Mgs, and then we Dow on the English. Later on we DoW on Saladin to take out a city he captured from the English. He had perhaps around 40 units in there which he was using to try to prevent the city from revolting. My CR-III tanks had a field day. Then it was off to attack Perc, and we vassaled him after taking out his nice capital. Next step… we DoW on Saladin again and take one city, then win with a UN victory.

End of Story…

BTW, WTH was going on with Sitting-Bulls capital this game? If you look, he has more than the legal limit for starting resources in his BFC.

Note: Please post another Immortal challenge soon!!

100 BC
Spoiler :

I started Ag - Wheel - Pottery. Found the marble right off and was instantly thinking oracle - monarchy for some odd reason. Took me an hour to play this though not much happened. Its on livestream/grashopasciv4.. I absolutely cannot play straight like this. Normally I tab out and do other stuff and plan more. I'm not sure if I'm playing bad or just uncomfortable, but this is what I look like at 100 BC :) EDIT - thats 4 cities...

I mined AND roaded that damn iron accidentally and no one wanted to trade for it... this was upsetting since I was HR'g my capital and want warriors. Settled to grab all the health resources.. I'm not sure if I want the parthenon or the cash, but the GL will go in my GP farm next to the capital. Tech pace is slow or I'd look like more of an idiot. Bust some settlers out next I guess. Caste for my GP farm for awhile then back to slavery?? Got a couple southern city sites that would need the whip.. Obviously I'm rushing libraries out to get a GS before my capital gets me a GP again. I don't know how fast I want to settle - I guess I have to to prevent SB settling on me. I really just want to get Oxford out since my capital will be a monster. And my GP farm will pop out a bunch of GS's to bulb me along.

Not spawn busting the little island. Hope barb galleys don't show up. Stay in caste and workshop everything else up?? I feel lost. Ooh saves in case you wanted to figure out what I could possibly have been thinking.

Spoiler :

Snuck a peek at your spoiler even though you are ahead since I wanted to see if you had anything about your early game. I love the capital move. I wanted to do that so bad. Love having the hammers in the capital. Worked out pretty sweet looks like. Have to compare against how I end up and I'll check TMIT's later. You have a better time than him?

mad
Spoiler :

I'd settle the desert city first yeah? Divert to fishing and that city will be able to pop out settlers/workers for you very fast. The marble site can come later and wouldn't do anything for you in the meantime.

You planning wheel - pottery - writing at this point yeah? I assume GS from the capital ASAP? Theres no happy in sight, so perhaps I'm wrong on settling desert first since commerce is what will constrain how fast you settle new cities.

I can't quit say if I had a better time or not. I only had one real disaster that I remember. Caused by my stupid vassals. One of my culture vic enemies had a lot of artillery brewing, so I DoW on him and wait for him to smack into my MG city. Unfortunately he didn't co-opperate, and after a few turns my vassals sent in some stacks to attack his closest major city which was on a hill. This city had full culture defense, with many fortified units with Guerilla II.

However, despite I was waiting first for Modern Armour to come in, I decided it would be a waste of my vassal's stacks if I didn't help out. So I marched a 30 unit stack with them. This was half CR-III Panzers and half highly promoted cavalry.

To make a bloody story short, this was a complete and utter failure. Really horsehockey dice rolls, and other things. We never did capture the city, and of my 15 panzers and 15 cavalry, only 2 panzers made it back home, with almost 0 health at that. Stupid...

Also for whatever reason my spie(s) didn't revolt the city either, which would have obviously made all the difference in the world. Vassals just suck.

Mad
Spoiler :
I'd either go for the desert fish/cow or the corn/coast sites. They can help the capital pump settlers.

Not ready for immortal yet (don't even feel ready on Emporer) but I hope you don't mind a mere mortal playing along on at Emporer.

Anyways... Emporer/Epic (No Huts or Events) 4000BC -> 1445AD

Ideally this would have been a perfect map for me on Monarch but on Emporer... It's not going so well.

Spoiler :

Played this game so far with little plan or organisation, with plenty of land at the start which was naturally blocked off I seemed to drop my guard early and really took my time doing anything. Made some really bad tech trade decisions earlier on trying to claw up to the tech leaders but I'm still behind in tech, power, land and pop. Won the lib race picked nationalism but got beaten to Taj. Decided to head straight for rifles even though I was in no shape to start or prep for a war. :crazyeye:

I currently confused as to how to win this game, again it seems on emporer I lose all ability to specialize cities or even get the basics right, for example I havn't founded a good site for a GP farm and were philosophical. Maybe I'm not ready for emporer or maybe I'm just having trouble adjusting to being behind in tech again.

Anyway some screenies.
