Hello Forum, and welcome to the PC! This series was started a while back and was purposed around getting Noble level players to Prince; and prince to Monarch. Also, the second, (and equally important) is to have fun! It is also advised for some of the more advanced players to help out the people asking questions by giving solid advice.

This is the eighth run in the series.

Our leader this time around

Civ4ScreenShot0223.jpg

Qin Shi Huang is Industrious and Protective. This is a fair blend of traits great for cheaply fending off enemy stacks early on due to Protective and good for wonder spamming and quick forges. He is decently balanced trait wise.

The Unique Unit

Civ4ScreenShot0224.jpg

The Chu-Ko-Nu is a very interesting unit. It substitutes for siege almost entirely, as it gets collateral damage in itself. This makes it a great independent unit. I am curious about the outcome of the game as I personally haven't used it extensively before.
The Unique Building

The Pavilion significantly improves culture and happiness... It is great for a cultural win or suppressing enemy borders.

Finally, a cut and paste (and another slight edit) of the Nobles Club standard doctrine:

(I hope it isn't rude to use the same doctrine, as It applies to most forum games.)

There are no hard and fast rules here: fun and learning are our primary goals, but we do request that you update your progress at various points in the game, using the Spoiler feature of the boards.

Tentative posting updates are suggested at:

4000 BC (starting thoughts, no spoiler required for that discussion)
1000 BC or so (how you decided to progress up the early tech/build paths, which AIs you have met, where you're thinking of putting cities, etc)
500 AD or so (after establishing some cities and a possible plan of action)
1200 AD or so (mid-game, Lib race, wars or peace, or whichever happened or didnt, met other continent if applicable, etc)
1600 AD (or when you have decided on a course of action and a specific victory condition)
End of game (Victory!!! or defeat, no shame in losing, especially if you tried a higher level. Learning is what we focus on, not fastest win or biggest empire)

Remember, these are only guidelines. What we really want are your thoughts as the game goes on, so if your strats don't fall into line with those dates, feel free to adjust your reports accordingly.

We also welcome players to ask for specific game advice, as we have a number or stronger players who lurk and help out with solid tips, and of course, we help each other. Replies to specific questions should also be in spoilers, with a simple "@" in front of the person the answer is directed towards.

The WB-saves are attached (zipped; they are bigger than standard saves). To play, simply download and unzip it into your BTS/Saves/WorldBuilder folder. Start the game, and load your favorite MOD (if you use one, if not, check out the BUG MOD), select "Play Scenario", and look for "PCVIII Qin Shi Huang" (or Monarch, if you want the AI to start with its usual Archery bonus tech, or Immortal for Archery+Hunting, or Deity to add Agriculture). This allows you to play with your favorite MOD at the Level and Speed of your choice. From Quick-Warlord to Marathon-Deity, all are welcome!

Have fun playing the forum game! :D

Three things CivIVMonger:

1- If the series is for Prince players, please start the map on Prince, which means no Archery for the AIs. Don't start a map on Monarch and post it as a Prince map. It screws warrior rushes, as KatyeKat found out last installment.

2- There's a line in the WBSave that reads
Code:
MaxTurns=500
It should read
Code:
MaxTurns=0
because people may want to play it on Epic or Marathon (or even Quick, but that's rarer). If you keep it the way you did, the games will abruptly end earlier. Please, be kind enough to read TMIT's guide to series creation again.

3- Finally some decent pictures! Way to go!

 Sorry, got too exited about the Photobucket Screenshots. Will fix the max turns right away! Sorry about the starting on Monarch; It is my standard difficulty level and I just forgot.

EDIT: Fixed the save entirely. Now you won't be able to see the opponents, I put the standard difficulty at Prince, and edited the Turns to unlimited. Sorry IT... At least I fixed it though.

personally, i never learn how to use cho-ku-no properly. First, it requires machinery, which takes a lot input to pull off before ai start getting feudalism. Second, it only has 6 str and it's weak against horse archers and knights. Third, it doesnt get city raiding promo, so catapults will do the job better. Fourth, it requires iron and a lot of hammer to build. Fifth, it only does max 50% collateral damage, while catapults can go lower.

The only good thing is that it gets an extra first strike, good defense against counter melee and solid def against longbows. Personally i have never prioritze machinery so i build them too late for them to be deadly.

I hope to learn how you pull off this game.

IMM/Normal

1822 Conquest

Spoiler :

Settled in place. AH ---> masonry. Cranked Gwall, missed henge, got oracle (but rushed it ---> monarchy), mids. Settled blockers in the jungle near zara. After that I went some awkward hybrid settled spec + bur cottages approach that didn't feel too impressive and yet the AIs were terrible on this map with infighting. I got rifles very average like ~1300's but was building military the whole time so hit zara with a mess of cannons/muskets/older and added rifles as I went. I bribed sury vs zara as I attacked, distracting zara and causing me to see no real resistance. From there, I just rolled. I got sury/izzy before they got rifles (barely), and fought mansa at a tech deficit. Capped all of them, leaving only ram + vassal toku. Ram was almost to infantry and fighters but not quite. Spam CR II cannon + drill III or IV rifles carried. Toku broke free and actually got infantry but he fell easily enough too.

Immortal/Epic to 670AD:

Spoiler :

Just testing the Cho-Ku-No -rush (Oracle MC, bulb Machinery). Not spectacular but works. Zara was the strongest AI and quickly got longbows and macemen. The war would probably have been harder with swords and cats. The first real counter to CKNs are knights so there's quite large window for them.

Good job TMIT. I do have a question though. How did you win Conquest without killing the AI?

MkLh:
Good job, just keep pressing Zara! :goodjob:

I am just *very* happy that I finally got the series up to good quality.

Deity / NSC

Start to Liberalism (940 AD)

Spoiler :

Since industrious leaders are so strong, I decided to toggle this one on deity again. I then edited in archery for the barbs and away we went.

I had planned to set up a decent SSE/WE and jump over the AI in a way they’d never catch up. Unfortunately I ran into some really horrifying incidences at just about every turn of the page.

I don’t know where to start… forget about the barbs for now. How about stupid-dumb Zara who was SUPPOSED to research writing (he was a deity AI after all), ends up abandoning that tech for a long time. So I couldn’t get OB with him because I had been counting on HIM getting it.

Then he settles in the most stupidest of places, but right near my capital. This blocks me from getting to other places I want. So then I move settler(s) the slow way past his borders. Welp, his borders pop and just as my settler(s) are right about to reach their destination, the stupid program decides to WARP them all the way back home. Yeah… real great choice there of unit direction.

How about… I was just about to finish off the Pyramids… when I get the notice it’s been finished. Yup… Zara again. How about, when I was on my LAST turn on UoS, I get the notice it’s complete. Yup, that was Zara.

How about the other barb city near my capital I was building units to take, and JUST the turn I was going to attack it, someone took it right before me… Yup, that was Zara.

How about the time….. Never mind you get the point.

Problems didn’t end with Zara, Mansu for example happened to get Music just the same turn I did as well, so naturally he gets the free artist on the tie-breaker and I’m sitting there like an idiot.

On and on it went…

And to top it off, Zara decides to DoW on Surry. And for some reason, Surry decides to capitulate after losing just ONE city. WTH?!

That can’t be good.

I simply don’t know what to say… I didn’t give up with all this bs, but if I lose this lib-race to ANOTHER tie, then the hell with it. But for now I will be up against two deity monsters if I decide to war, and that’s assuming Zara doesn’t screw me by vassaling someone else too or what-not.

Oh well, a look in my capital shows I am most likely going to have to burn off a lot of beakers going after constitution after that pyramids-zara escapade. So much bad timing this game it makes me just sick.

Oh yeah, and of course Mansu just beats me in a close race on Sistine-C somehow. Lets see, I had much hammers from my plots and moved capital-hills. I also had 50% for ind trait, as well as 100% for marble. I even had my workers chopping forests with math over-lay. And yet I STILL manage to lose building this to an AI who isn’t even industrious.

Now how the F*CK is that even possible? God damn deity cheats make me sick sometimes.

personally, i never learn how to use cho-ku-no properly.
I built a few chariots while working towards the bulb, then some swords once iron was hooked up. Unfortunately, a prophet popped ~500BC at 44% odds. I wonder if I should have been more patient and tried to pop it in another city. There weren't alot of forests around except for the capital, and they were absolutely necessary for oracle at least because I didn't start it until close to 1000BC.

I figured the CKN would suicide for some collateral, then my swords/chariots would mop up. Their two free first strikes and chance to promote up the drill line hopefully help them pull through.

In all fairness, I probably would be better off pushing for catapults, as construction doesn't seem any longer a path than the bulb (probably faster tbh).

1849 UN diplo victory, monarch/epic:

Spoiler :

I settled 1S to get more hills in the BFC. Given the food shortage, I farmed up the remaining grasslands. Early tech path was AH, myst, masonry, med, PH, wheel, pottery, BW. Opening builds were worker, warrior, stonehenge, warrior, worker, settler, GW, oracle(monarchy), mids. I used the settler to block Zara off and grab dyes/gems. I went back and forth on where to place it, and ended up with no food specials in the BFC - I was nervous about settling too close to a creative AI. Lots of green tiles to farm, though, so it came out OK. With the peninsula blocked, I concentrated on wonderspamming in the capital while building settlers in the other cities. Military was seriously neglected due to having the GW.

Mansa founded hinduism, which was adopted by all the neighbors (Zara, Surya), so I converted as soon as it spread to me. We became the happy hindu tech club, so it was a very easy game. They (along with jewish Rameses) concentrated on dogpiling heathen Izzy. Surya eventually vassaled her. I poppled 3 GPs in a row in Beijing, all duly settled. This enabled me to tech at 100% for a good while. I found marble on the eatern peninsula and settled it early. The tech path went something like alpha (traded from Mansa for monarchy), math, IW (from Zara), calendar (built MoM), poly+mono (from Surya), lit (built GL), music (built Sistine), drama, theo (trade from Mansa, built AP), feud (trade from Zara), CS, paper (trade from Mansa), edu, lib (won by Mansa), nat (built Taj), constitution, PP (trade), democracy (built SoL).

Mansa was a tech monster all game, winning lib by 6 turns over me. I was firendly with all the hindus, so I was easily elected pope. However, Mansa screwed my chances of an AP victory by voluntarily vassaling to Surya. Plan B was the UN. After sci meth> communism (built Kremlin), I went bio> medicine and founded Sid's with a GM I had saved. I traded my way through guilds, banking, GP, researched chemistry, traded Mansa for steel, researched RR and founded Mining Inc. Then it was up through physics, electricity (built Broadway), radio (built R&R, Eiffel), MM (built Hollywood). I then gifted elect/radio/MM to Ram so he would build the UN. I was easily elected secretary general and won with the first vote.

The UB was very useful in fighting off Zara's creative culture, especially in Chengdu - which I squeezed into a little gap on the NW border with Zara to try to steal one of his copper tiles. It ended up being my 3rd highest culture city due to all the culture buildings there:

Kaifeng - used to claim the orphaned wheat, but I turned in into my NP city. Not bad output for a city with 7 tiles being desert/peaks.

Immortal / NSC (The Benchmark)
Init --> 1120 A.D. (Liberalism)

I decided to re-do my pre-lib game in Immortal, but stick to the same policy and see how different things go. Sure enough the difference in ease is like normal is to epic.

Spoiler :
I even settled 1 less city this game, while leaving Zara to squeeze in an extra in my territories. And I am most definitely kicking his ass. Everyone’s in fact.

Pyramids worked out, so did everything else. I haven’t even gone on the aggressive side but without a doubt I will stop over Zara soon, despite he is a giant.

Early on Mansa dog piled on the Japs and became a dangerous master, but I was able to get him dog piled on, so things have been stack over in that side of the world.

I decided to tech up nationalism first (that’s rare), and then use Lib to take off military tradition. Now, I just need to finish off gunpowder, and BOOM I’m going to have such a massive army in 10 turns the AI won’t know what hit em.

My tech dragged off a lot because after a billion great people, I only just now popped a scientist FINALLY for my academy. I was starting to wonder if I was ever going to get it.

Anyhow, I will continue later on this evening.

Immortal / NSC
1120 A.D. To End-Game

Spoiler :

Zara was such an ass, he refused to capit. And I didn’t want his last 3 or so cities because they were so bad, and yet, I can’t understand… I had so much more power, and terrain, yet he would never capit to me. Instead, he would always capit to someone else, dragging me in more wars.

I got stuck down in war after war after war, at one point I think I was fighting the entire world except for Mansa & his tiny Jap vassal.

Anyhow, I continued to cut down units after units after units with cavalry powered by SEE/WE and I didn’t even bother drafting anything, no real point. In the end, I vassaled all the way up to Izzy and Rammesses, and then eliminated Japan right off the continent.

Also, the stupid AI decided to capture my city nearest my capital with an amphibious invasion. This was interesting because with my shrine discount and culture and city distance discount, I could rob the bastard blind. The only problem is my tech was so huge I really had no need to steal.

So I sat there and turn after turn after turn used a cannon and decided to get infinite exp on it, while the AI was stuck in a city that was in constant revolt. LOL. I just don’t’ get what’s with this stupid AI.
