What is CouchSurfing?

CouchSurfing is an international non-profit network that connects travelers with locals in over 230 countries and territories around the world. Since 2004, members have been using our system to come together for cultural exchange, friendship, and learning experiences. Today, over a million people who might otherwise never meet are able to share hospitality and cultural understanding.

Our mission as an organization is to create inspiring experiences: cross-cultural encounters that are fun, engaging, and illuminating. These experiences take many forms. CouchSurfing's initial focus was on hosting and 'surfing' (staying with a local as a guest in their home). Alongside these core experiences, we now also facilitate a growing array of activities and events.

We have a vision of a world where everyone can explore and create meaningful connections with the people and places they encounter. Each CouchSurfing experience shared by our members brings us closer to that vision.
How does CouchSurfing work?

CouchSurfing members share hospitality with one another. These exchanges are a uniquely rich form of cultural interaction. Hosts have the opportunity to meet people from all over the world without leaving home. 'Surfers,' or travelers, are able to participate in the local life of the places they visit. We also give more people the chance to become travelers, because 'surfing' lowers the financial cost of exploration.

The CouchSurfing community continues to expand its horizons. Members are always finding more ways to connect and learn about each other. Every day, people across the world share coffee, camping trips, meetings, language exchanges, discussions and all sorts of other experiences.

More can be read here.

So basically, what you do is you find someone on that site, you work out some sort of deal and you go there and sleep on their couch - for free.

Seems like a very cool way to meet new people.

Basically, what I'm wondering is if you'd ever consider letting a CFC-member sleep on your couch for a few days? Maybe show him/her around where you live, meet your friends and whatnot.

Any specific members you'd love/wouldn't mind having over or go visit?

(I for one would like to visit Berlin. Yes, I'm looking at your couch, Harvin87 )

This sounds like a great program. When I've travelled, I was usually on my own to find a sofa. I think we learn alot more about a culture/place by living with locals compared to hotel rooms.

I'd do this for a CFC member. Gainesville has amazing natural attractions: Paynes Prarie, cold springs, beach 1.5h away, recreational lakes with boats, canoeing on rivers, near a National/State Forest (with black bears) and many great nature trails.

As long as a gf is not visiting, I even have time to be a host.

I'm pretty much a lone ranger here, so I dunno about names. I'm kinda curious who would not be too scared...

This sounds cool. (Also, tags say "hoboe". I think it should be "hobo".) I could probably pull out a spare mattress rather than a couch here at my house...

I'm definately going to sign up for this.

I guess I have some people here I wouldn't mind having over (granted my family's okay with it).

Tailleskangaru and d.Highland are pretty much the only ones I can think of right now. I have others but they are too old  Maybe Love too but he lives close by so it's stupid.

I'll share my couch with any of you, but when you're in the shower, I'll go through your things.

I wouldn't sleep on Till or Downtown's couches because of the insane amount of women they sleep with.

That's okay, I'll put fetish porn in my things so that you stop looking through them. :p

I also couch surf on MobBoss' couch when he snores too loud.
