Monarch Attempt Three... Hello forum, thank you for your help in the first 2 attempts. I actually won the second thanks to your help. This third time I picked...

Civ4ScreenShot0299.jpg

Pericles! :D He is Philosophical and Creative. What a wonderful combo for his play style, a cultural Specialistic leader type. I've had numerous requests to get a GPF rolling specialists early. This time, I plan to do so.

The UU

Civ4ScreenShot0300.jpg

This unit sucks but at least it is still better than the Axeman I guess... No one defends their cities with Chariots! I can still make good use of it I hope.

The UB

Civ4ScreenShot0301.jpg

I love the Odeon. It generates +2 :) and +3 :culture: a good UB indeed. I will heavily use this one for sure...

Advice welcomed and thanked. Thank'ee! :D

I don't think you understand the Phalanx. The point is that Chariots are a good counter to Axemen, getting +100% against. Phalanxes, though, have no counter. So with a Chariot V. regular axeman, it's a strength 4 unit versus 2.5. Axeman loses. Versus Phalanx, it's 4 versus 5. Phalanx probably wins. It's more useful in multi, as AIs have no idea how to counter.

EDIT: Note that it's +100% defence.

Move scout 2S to check for more seafood. 1NE is likely a strategic resource so keep that in mind if you settle for the sheep. If there is more food down south then I'd consider settling 2S1W

those unforested tiles look like strat resources. just settle in place.

Do remember to use specialists on this game!!! Otherwise philosphical trait is wasted!! When you have 2-3 cities set up build a library somewhere and get 2 scientists running in your capital or a second city. The earlier the better.

Grabbing the oracle (COL) will allow a early philosophy grab with a great scientist. Do make sure you dont build the Oracle in your GP farm. You will need writing to take COL from oracle. Great people dilution can be a pain.

Question for me is what is the resource 1NE. If its iron you might settle in place. If its something like oil or uranium then you think about moving to add the sheep to your BFC. hmmmm.

Overall you need to concentrate on your micromanagement and learn how to abuse specialists this game. You could have 3-4 compared to a normal game early on. It should also make the music grab easier. Remember the bonus is only on the base rate.

If you find gold the SW wonder will help this kind of game. Parthernan too for 50% GP point bonus. Lots of multipliers to think about.

Overall play the map and see what it allows.

Move the scout south (sheep hill) to check for seafood for a viable southern city before deciding on capital location.

I would settle in place. You have fresh water, at least 2 food resources, 4 farmable grasslands, 5 hills, coastal, and wine. If there happens to be any more seafood to the south you can still grab it with another city. There's also a good chance that the unforested grassland 1 NW has a resource which you would lose by moving south.

Still, the best move for your scout would probably be south to the sheep hill to make sure that there isn't any overly compelling reason to settle 1 SW (such as 2 more seafoods down there). Otherwise, in place looks like a great capital. The forests/hills means that you should have some good production early on for a either a rush or wonderhogging depending on neighbors. You might even be able to get the mids and run an SE if there's stone nearby.

If you find gold the SW wonder will help this kind of game.

SW Wonder? I may be having a braincramp, but this one is lost on me. What is the SW Wonder?

Spoiler :

It'll be interesting to see where people place their cities. I wasn't sure about where I settled Sparta, but it looks like it will turn out to be a nice production city. I built the library there for cultural pressure.

I'm only researching at 30 GPT at 500 BC.

Christianity was founded on turn 84 (775 BC). That shocked the hell out of me and my Nobleness.

Some screenshots from my novice start, to 500 BC:

@hou jing- this is just a pet peeve of mine, but could you format the pictures differently? They are fairly gigantic and induce much scrolling back and forth!

I'll reduce them some and then edit the post.

Edit - Done, let me know if this worked.

Unless it is overcompelling to do a rush, I want to chop some Wonders and abuse specialists just to shake things up. I want to polish a wide variety of play styles. I liked Gumbolts idea of micromanaging a small empire up to Rifles. The map might say otherwise though. ;)

To 1AD
Spoiler :

Civ4ScreenShot0304.jpg

Settled in place. This capital has plenty of production for wonder whoring.

Civ4ScreenShot0305.jpg

That Marble will help w/ the Parthenon and other Marble wonders. Great for the type of game I want to be playing.

Civ4ScreenShot0306.jpg

This looks like the future site of Sparta. Alot of food via farmed FPs and Pig not to mention riverside grass and Marble. :D

Civ4ScreenShot0307.jpg

I don't want to complain. This sucks though... As long as I am in his faith than I think I can stay alive near him.

Civ4ScreenShot0308.jpg

A Zealot with high unit build and wonderspam. Hard to contend with but easy to please.

Civ4ScreenShot0309.jpg

The #1 reason I be Gilgamesh is so this doesn't happen.

Civ4ScreenShot0310.jpg

I settled Sparta as planned.

Civ4ScreenShot0310.jpg

Much closer than expected. I'll have to play a good game to stay in it.

Civ4ScreenShot0312.jpg

I'll go for it. Barbs don't really look too Rampant due to the close borders. Failure $ is nice though.

Civ4ScreenShot0313.jpg

 1 Turn away. I think the game is programmed to do stuff like this.

Civ4ScreenShot0314.jpg

A little wait but I have so much food in Sparta that I can quickly get those Scientists up.

Civ4ScreenShot0316.jpg

Got a Library up and quickly ran Scientists.

Civ4ScreenShot0317.jpg

Yes! I'm just going to tell you. A Religious love fest is about to happen.

Civ4ScreenShot0318.jpg

Parthenon! Trade Chip! Shwadagon Paya!

Civ4ScreenShot0319.jpg

:eek::eek: I'll have to whip Archers in Sparta to defend myself.

Civ4ScreenShot0320.jpg

Normally I'd kill Darwin if I'd seen him, but this time I have him build an academy. :)

Civ4ScreenShot0321.jpg

THIS IS SPARTA!!!

Civ4ScreenShot0322.jpg

I have a strong feeling that that "resource" is Iron. Plus, Swords would help, actually... Never mind, they make bran flakes vs. Vultures.

Civ4ScreenShot0323.jpg

Yeah, sure. TR's will help with an economy.

Civ4ScreenShot0324.jpg

Traded this to Justinian for some crap that I don't feel like researching. For some reason, they won't trade Alphabet? Anyway, I thought I saw a stack on my Native America border and I can't fend off 2 Warmongers. This gift got him to Pleased.

I will make peace w/ Gilgamesh as soon as he will talk. What should I do next? All I really am doing is micromanaging a small 6 city empire with specialists and wonders. Any thoughts on the next plan of action?

Why did you research The Wheel first?

Why did you research Myst before writing?

If you research a turn or two into Alphabet you can trade Aesthetics for it. Alpha and Aest have the same beaker value, so the AI will sometimes perceive Alpha to be worth a bit more. However, if you put beakers into it the perceived value decreases.

Only on very rare occasions should you self-research IW. You can usually trade Aesthetics/Alpha for it.

Start looking to bulb your way up the Liberalism line. 1 GS for Philo, 1 for Edu. Then look to use Lib to get you to a military advantage - either musket+cannon or curisassiers are common.

Sparta is clearly a cottage city, I have no idea why you wasted it by farming everything . The advice to run some specialists doesn't mean to shoot yourself in the foot to do it! Just run 2 in some random early city, no need for it to be your future GP farm.

also with Giggles, Sitting Bull and maybe Justin close by I would have prioritised getting hold of some Copper and building some troops to be able to defend against anything that came without having to whip lots of pop.

I played a shadow to 1AD, no screens but i'll post the save and put a bit of explanation in spoilers.
Spoiler :
I jumped on the western copper with my 1st settler (Sparta) making use of its reasonable production to build many Phalanx, I also used up the food from the Deer by running 2 specialists and i'm near my 3rd scientist at 1AD now.

I decided to move the capital to my floodplain city Corinth for the Bureau bonus and the intention is to use Athens as a GP farm, it has decent food, fresh water to farm and enough production to get the GLib and Nat Epic out quickly. When Athens takes over GPs, then Sparta can be allowed to grow again.

I have another big production city up north, Argos, the Elephants with food have led to a nice :hammers: output.

Mycenae is going to concentrate on culture things to steal those gems from Giggles land.

The tech position is strong so far, there are a few techs AIs have picked up that I don't have but Giggles and SB don't even have Alphabet yet! The current goal is Music for the GA for a Golden Age, which should roughly coincide with Athens becoming a Gpfarm with some chopping.

I did play further, but I got bored at around 500AD when I was so far ahead it got silly.

Wow you really did get some nasty neighbours!!

Looking at map I dont think you needed the great wall. The land is boxed in enough and 1-2 warriors would of covered any fog busting required. That and Ai units exploring.

5-6 cities is going to be a tough ask on this map. Athens is a great GP farm. Perhaps Sparta for a cottage city.

Even with the Iron i would of gone with the sheep at the start.

Ended up playing a shadow (up to 1ad):

Spoiler :
Moved scout south and settled in place as no seafood for a southern city. Worker>warriors>settler at pop4, standard stuff.

Settled Sparta aggressively and got away with it. Also got a nice silver city down south. With gold and FP cottages tech has gone ok. Got academy and Glib in capital, got Col, currency and just bulbed philosophy.

Converted Gilly to confu, SB is buddhist and Gil and SB are worst enemies at the moment. Building HAs to counter SB's dogs if required. Construction for cataphants is awfully tempting.

Spoiler :
Its interesting the land grab for the 2 gold site. This maps issue is lack of land to settle and somewhat difficult Ai to rush. I wonder if a worker steal and AI seige to slow down Ai would of worked here.

I do think Justin will be a tough cookie on all the saves that are shadowing.

I almost want to finish this offline... I'm not giving up though you'll have to admit that the map was tough and difficult along with a nasty draw of AI's. I know that the thread is about me winning, but I think I'm stumped. Just as I start drafting my Rifles with about 50 Cannons, SB DoW's and catches me unprepped and unaware.

Sorry.
