Welcome to the first running of the Civfanatics Hall of Fame Challenge Series. :D

The series is a collection of 10 games with a time limit of 4 months to complete them (from 1st Jan 2010 - 30th April 2010). The games are designed to (hopefully) be more defined than the usual gauntlet games and more challenging than a general Hall of Fame game, yet far from impossible to complete.

The winner will be the person who finishes all ten games and collects the most points along the way (10 for 1st in each individual game, down to 1 for 10th). Progress results for all games can be found here.

All of the games need to be played using version 2 of the BUFFY mod (BUFFY-3.19.002), found here.

There are individual threads for each game in the Challenge Series forum but feel free to use this thread for general comments or questions on the series as a whole.

Some of these games look like fun. I'll try to do the tank war, AW boreal one, and the OCC spaceship. Not sure if I'll find time to do all of them :(

Intriguing

Looking forward to this indeed.

Maybe you should state more clearly the version used, before people start playing games with the 001 BUFFY.

this is a brilliant idea, can't wait to get started!
some very interesting sounding games.

I would like to try it. but I am all confused what to download. it didn't really tell when I clicked that link. it had like (at least) 20 links or something..

The BUFFY-3.19.002 mod download is here. I'll change the link in the OP to link direct to this actually.

Once you have that installed, just start games up with settings as detailed in the game threads and you should be right.

When I look in the new Series tab on the Gauntlet page, all 10 games say the Sitting Bull conquest game which is Challenge I-01.

Sorry to be picky :cringe:

 I wouldn't think that would be cached. Do you hit the "Go" button after changing the dropdown?

Suggestion: Simply give points as you planned, but don't require completion of all 10 games. Otherwise, the final results could be quite sparse. I'm 99% sure I won't do all 10 games.

Whether or not they do this depends on their intent in the series.

Some of the maps are challenging, or would be for people below consistent immortal. If they want part of the challenge to be actually completing each of the 10 games (which have variable VC's, rules, and map scripts), they might want to leave it as is. If they want to just do a basic score tally, the rules make more sense as you suggest.

Of course I have little doubt that you or any other consistent high-placing HoF player could run through them all if you wanted. I will certainly place higher if all 10 are enforced only because my play speed will hinder me less :p...although I doubt I will ever put up serious contention in BOTM or HoF due to an unwillingness to micro extra carefully...

I guess I'll have to abandon my game 1 and start again with the new mod. Glad to have those bugs cleaned up though. :goodjob:

If it's a long running thing (years, like QM), I can see the value of completing all. But I'd rather see 50 names on the final score sheet. If there's only 2 or 3 it will look pretty pathetic. In the GOTM, SGOTM, all participants get listed in the results, even if they are defeated.

The challenger series idea came out of the discussion to fix/replace EQM. So I don't think the concept/requirement of completing all events was intended for a short run competition like this one.

For example, It will deter many people from even starting who stumble upon it in with only 2 months to go. Increasing participation should be a major goal.

Completion of all ten games isn't a requirment to end up on the final results board (which we haven't designed yet :mischief:) but as stated the winner is the person who has completed all ten games and has the most points.

We'll re-assess after the first running if this needs to change.

my suggestion to increase participation would be to allow multiple difficulty levels then adjust score based on the difficulty the game was played at. At the moment most of the games appear to be at immortalish difficulty and that will deter a lot of people from playing.
