THE LORD OF THE RINGS MAFIA GAME

One Ring to rule them all,
One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all
and in the darkness bind them.

This is the Lord of the Rings Mafia Game. I have 44 spots available, so it should be great fun.

The story will be based around the Lord of the Rings movies, not the books, and I have taken some liberty with my translation of the storyline into this game. So any changes from the movies are deliberate. And there are some.

Just to summarise what the basic premise of the game will be: The Innocents must keep the One Ring out of Mafia hands. Whichever side has the One Ring at the end of the game wins.

Now, this is going to be a relatively complex game. For all the NOTW players out there, this game has multiple factions, abilities, items and victory conditions, so you should enjoy it. For any novices out there, this game is really easy to learn and pretty self explanatory, so you should enjoy it too.

Given the size of the game, I feel I should disclose that I have no idea what the result will be. It should be a fair and balanced game, but there is every chance that it could be rather lopsided. But regardless, it will be fun. Everyone has a good chance to win.

And if you are not familiar with the Lord of the Rings movies or stories, do not despair. You don't need to know much about it to play this game. In fact, you don't really need to know anything. Having said that, any knowledge that you do have about the movies will probably help you out a little. If you are unfamiliar with anything that you feel you should be more familiar with, I'd suggest browsing The One Wiki To Rule Them All. It has all the information you could possibly need.

So please sign up, it should be great fun. As said, I need 44 players (which is a record for CFC AFAIK), so if we don't have the required players, I'll send some PMs around. I'll try and get the game started around the 16th or 17th (I'll be away for most of the coming week, so I'll be relying on you people to recruit for me). If you know anyone from offsite who would like to play (I'm looking at you, Total War forums people), if we are struggling for numbers feel free to invite them. But let's make sure everyone from CFC who wants to participate can.

GAME RULES
  1. The game consists of alternate Day and Night Phases. Each Day Phase will be 48 hours long, and each Night Phase will be 24 hours long, unless otherwise specified. I would appreciate if you do attempt to stick to these time limits. I will probably be reasonably strict with it, so it's most likely your loss if you can't make the deadline. I want to keep the game moving once it starts.
  2. Quoting, forwarding or copying in any way your role PM or any other PMs or private communication from me is prohibited. Just don't try it. If you don't know if you are doing something right or wrong with regards to this, just check with me first.
  3. Be active. In the game, that is. The game will not function properly if you do not participate. Don't ruin it for the 43 other people who are participating (hopefully) by not participating. If inactivity becomes too much of a problem, I'll either have to remove people from the game, or institute some sort of in-game penalty. If you know you will be absent for a period of time, please let me know, so I don't be mean to you.
  4. Private communication is allowed. In fact, it is strongly, strongly encouraged. Your success or failure in this game will be largely dependent upon whether or not you can effectively communicate with your fellow players.
  5. When you die, you may not talk about the game in or out of thread until the conclusion of the game. Feel free to keep watching; an avid audience is always a good thing. But do not talk to anyone about the game or your role in it until the game is completely over. There is a very good reason for this, but I'm not going to tell you what it is. Additionally, if you have died, and happen to still be posting in this thread (which is welcomed), make sure you don't reveal anything about the game itself. General amusing chit-chat is always welcome, so long as it does not reveal anything about the game. Also, if you are alive, do not contact the dead about the game in any way.
  6. Speaking of the game ending, do not assume the game is over unless I directly tell you that it is. I would hate for someone to think the game is over and reveal all their secrets, only to find out that the game has not in fact finished.
  7. Voting. Each day, each person will get one vote. There will be one lynch each day. I don't really care how you vote, so long as you bold your vote, and so long as it is clear who you are actually voting for. If it isn't clear, I might just not count it.
  8. Thoroughly read and comply with all PMs that I send you.
  9. Roleplaying is not necessary, although, as always, it is welcomed.
  10. Talking at Night is allowed.
  11. New Rule: There will be lock-out periods in which no communication about the game may take place; private or in-thread. Absolutely zilch. This will be the time in which I do write-ups and send out PMs. I will inform you when lock-out periods begin and when they end.
  12. New Rule: The game will begin at day, but the first lynch will require over 50% of votes (at least 23) in order to succeed.
  13. Have fun and play within the spirit of the game.
  14. Don't bite me if I do something wrong; it's the first game I'm GMing.
  15. Abide by the forum rules at all times.
  16. Read the rules again.

Also, please read this post.

I hope I haven't forgotten anything...

Please ask questions about the rules and game now in this thread so I address anything I've accidently forgotten about or neglected to mention before the game gets underway.

Now, obviously a lot of these rules are impossible for me to police, so we can either go for the honesty system or the dob-in-a-neighbour system. I prefer a hybrid of the two. I can trust everyone to follow the rules (it's just a game, cheating is no fun), but if you do think someone is cheating, feel free to let me know.

To bad my LoR knowledge extends to reading the Hobbit for a book report in grade 6, and watching those movies around the same time and not remembering anything today.

This looks fun. In.

In, though my knowledge of this LotR is very limited.

I think Im in. What do you mean with active. Check once a day? And, how long will it last?

The rINg will be mine!

Ooh, I'd been looking to join a new cycle of Mafia games...something light and fun on the forums while I still haven't had much time for playing civ games themselves. Plus, LOTR is always awesome. I think you can count me IN.

PS: Elves DON'T die...they only "sail west" :D

Ready to take on those "Khazad ai-menu!" chumps and chumpettes.

Oh and also I really hope the new avatar/theme won't be inconveniencing - to let everyone know, I'd been planning it a while and it has nothing to do with this game, obviously I don't know if I'll be an elf or not or what.

They die well enough if you stick a sword in them.

I have to play this, I just have to. And I'm not sure who I'm kidding with this (myself?), but I will most likely not be up to my usual level of participation. Which is not to say I'll be inactive.

/in

Lord OST, once a day is probably about the minimum required to get much out of the game. More participation is almost always better in these things, but nobody'll get irritated if you do manage the once per day.

What Renata said. If you can't make it one or two days every now and then, that's fine, so long as you're here regularly other than that. Honestly, I have no idea how long it will last, although a test game I did with a random number generator went to about the 16th night; so that would be 48 days, if we stick to the time schedule. But that was a remarkably close test, so I don't know how long it will actually last. I'd say anywhere between one and two months.
