I followed the instructions in the readme, with the exception of installing the DLL in :

D:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\sid meier's civilization iv beyond the sword\Assets

Because the directory specified in the readme does nto exist.

I opened the game/BTS (yes restarted) and I see that the BULL exclusive checkboxes are still grey and ask me to install it.

Any idea how I can get it to work?

EDIT : I only copied (overwriten) CvGameCoreDLL.dll as instructed in the readme so BULL will be always active.

Ok found part of the solution. The right folder is this one :

D:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\sid meier's civilization iv beyond the sword\Beyond the Sword\Assets

However I am getting variable names instead of the correct text in many places. Here's a screenshot of one of them :

EDIT : Maybe relevant, I installed BUG using the exe installer. And I installed BULL manually.

I uninstalled everything and installed BUFFY. Now everything works fine including the BULL features.

Any reason why I should not keep BUFFY as an easy way of getting BUG + BULL setup and working perfectly?

BUFFY is a great choice if you don't need to open random games posted online (SGs or walkthroughs) using BUG.

The reason you were seeing variable names is you need to also copy the other folders inside BULL's Assets folder (Art, Res, XML) to the "BUG Mod 4.2\Assets" folder.

I will try installing it as a custom mod then, thanks.

What are SGs and walkthroughs and where can I find them?

SGs are Succession Games where several players share turns for a single civ player, discussing strategy and plans, posting summaries and screenshots, etc. Walkthroughs are games like the All Leader Challenge where players post a running summary of their games and posters make suggestions for strategy.

When a game is started using a mod, that mod must be loaded to open the saved game files for it. For this reason, BUG can be installed to the CustomAssets folder where it affects all games since it is always running.

You can find both types of games and more here in the forums.
