the illegal download poll

which of the following applies to you?

  • Total voters
    96
Well, I've voted as Mise, but think I did not get the point of the poll correctly. Third one is probably woud be more correct, but well.

I rarely, if ever, download anything (other than downloading pages such as this one to look at). Apart from the odd podcast via iTunes Store, or something. So I'm pretty sure that the last option applies to me.

You wouldn't steal a handbag. You wouldn't steal a bicycle. You wouldn't steal a policeman. Then why steal digital media?

Of course, if you could download a bicycle that subtracted nothing from the manpower or other resources of the producer, and was identical to the product as it would be purchased legitimately, then I bet most people would indeed download a bicycle.

Ease of doing so without immediate disincentive.

Thread title/Poll questions also suggest something other than copyrighted material, btw. :mischief:

Poll needs: i download illegal stuff and think it's a victimless crime, but i'm ok with committing victimless crimes

one more option is mine:

- I download illegal stuff and I know that it is illegal but I still sleep well at night, beacuse it is not a crime.

Read the first paragraph.

You're buying the box and the packaging, or the movie theatre experience. Having copyrights on digital media is like having patents on medicine, ideas, phrases, formulas, schematics, etc., kinda silly. If you can't control what you create then it's too bad.

Well first of all. I don't download. I just think it's wrong. Plus, I can't be bothered sitting on the internet waiting or leaving my computer on.

Second of all, I like a lot of movies most people don't like. Either really old ones or ones not big in box office. And I like classical music. Generally I think those things don't appear on those download sites.

Finally, some of the worst movies and music are the popular stuff that's been downloaded. I think, in a sordid way, they deserve being robbed so they won't make anymore of that crap.

Most movies I wouldn't buy anyways and I still frequently visit the cinema and occasional buy movies. So I don't feel like harming anyone in that regard.
PC games I never "steal".
It is another thing with music as I almost totally stopped paying for it. I recognize this as wrong, yet I still don't feel really bad about it as I mostly don't listen to underground stuff and other musicians seem to be still well off.
