Welcome to my next Role Play Challenge, Oh Israel and the search for the Promised land! These games are meant to be educational and fun and are a different slant from the Classic RPC as we do not focus on one of our beloved 52 leaders.

Here we turns our eyes to the forgotten people of Civilization, the Jews. Yes friends, the poor Jews have been thrown aside with no respectable leader, oh Sid why have your forsaken them! But do not fear friends, for I am here to bring them respect (well that remains to be seen) and lead them to the promised land (Just what is that anyway?).

And I am playing as ISRAEL, for truely friends what one Jew can serve this people from the many that history has given us. In the spirit of the Gupta's (and let's hope the Jews fair better than the inept Indians) we shall have a new Jew leading Israel every segment!

We start with the founding Father of Israel, the Prophet Abraham. And of couse we do need to use some Civilization and leader, thus Brennus of the Celts be our man! Charasmaitc because who doesn't like the Jews () and Spiritual for the greatest religion on earth!

There are no extreme rules here, this is more a true Role Play game to have fun with Israel and play it up! The last game was a Mod and frankly the RPC angle fell off a bit, so I will make it up here.

Game Settings

Epic Speed, Emperor difficulty
Large Continents Map because frankly the Jews will spread all over and they need land
Arid map for Palestine flavor
There are 9 preselected leaders who repressed the Jews, and it's true I could use a 34 leader mod here but for simplicity let's stop at 9.

The Leaders

Alexander: For the cursed hellinistic culture that corrupted the true Jewish religion
Bismark: Need I say why?
Isabella: For the Spanish Inquisition that killed more Jews than Muslims.
Hammurabi: Read the bible man!
Cyrus: OK, someone who actually helped the Jews, we can backstab him.
Saladin: Because the Arabs hate the Jews.
Ramesses: Because he just couldn't let those people go.
Agustus: Well we need some Roman for Burning the Temple down.
Stalin: For the Russian Jews, for the Russian Jews.

The Rules:

1) We must found Judaism obviously. We also need to build the Temple fop Solomon and stay in either Organized religion or Theocracy. we cannot found another religion

2) The Jews MUST secure the Promised land, meaning they must control the entire continent they start on. And I mean CONTROL, no Vassals allowed for the Jews.

3) The Apostalic Palace is an abomination to the Jews and cannot be built. If captured it must be razed. All AP votes, if we get the religion, must be defied. The exception is if the AP happens to become Jewish, then we can simply vote NO.

4) Otherwise we can play as we see fit. I chose no trade restrictions, we are Jews and can trade for what ever benefits us Jews. All victory conditions ar eopen except obviously the AP diplomatic win.

Now onto our Founding Jew

I have always liked this picture, reminds me of my old CAtholic Grammer school days!

And the start

OK we need to move on Monotheism early with sal and Issy. I say fishing/Masonry/Polytheism/monotheism with perhaps archery for defense. Land looks good and there is enough food with fishing.

Come oh Israel, it is time we move to claim what has been promised to us!!!!!!!

Perhaps make a play for stonehedge.

Since you are committed to Monotheism, and I agree you need to beeline it to assure you found judasim, you can put off a worker a bit as they will have nothing to do.

I'd probably throw agriculture in there, if you plan on building a worker. If not, then I'd even consider going settler first, since you're not going to have any useful worker techs.

*edit: yeah, with mysticism, maybe go warrior/stonehenge/work boat*3/back to stonehenge to start. Especially being charismatic, stonehenge will help.

Sad this is I seem to recall Germany during Bismarck's reign as one of the better places for Jews (mind you, this is compared to the rest of Europe, so not saying much).

Back on topic, you really do deliver with these RPCs! Is it safe to assume that save scumming is permitted if we fail the Judaism beeline (as TMIT mentioned, even starting with Mysticism, it's not guaranteed).

2) The Jews MUST secure the Promised land, meaning they must control the entire continent they start on. And I mean CONTROL, no Vassals allowed for the Jews.

In keeping with the biblical history of the Jews, I would say that not only must they control the homeland continent, there must be no foreign cities there. IOW, they must raze all enemy cities on their home continent.

On other continents they can keep whatever cities (except for the AP city) they want.

I technically failed this RPC twice, although once I'm not really willing to count since nobody in the world can pass rule #1 on a 100% basis (depends entirely on luck). I'll post my thoughts on the rules, map, and my mistakes in a spoiler:

Spoiler :

The first time I played this, I went fishing, masonry, poly, mono. I instantly failed the RPC when judaism was FIADL 2725 BC. There is no way short of popping masonry from a hut to get it that quickly.

The 2nd time I just clicked on mono right from the start. I was lucky enough to pop fishing from a hut, but to deal with barbs went great wall. Also thanks to having the religious techs already and no worker techs other than fishing I went oracle to get monarchy set up so that I could afford some heavy whipping-down to expand.

I got 3 cities by 1000 BC, but here lies the 2nd problem with this map given our rules:

The land immediately near us is complete crap. All desert with some wine. The good stuff, to the north, is contended by augustus...and requires IW to develop when we're already behind in tech. The land to the east is interestingly contended by cyrus even though he's further off, because he goes into city spam mode and will rapidly run down to the east.

Competing with their expansion is very difficult as we are compelled to delay expansion some 40+ turns by ensuring we get judaism. This is further complicated by the fact that our final neighbor is sal, who will always found hinduism on this map and has a reasonable chance of getting it to spread to the other 2.

So the typical look early on this map is going to be a semi-scattered empire with limited presence in the jungle and probably only the flood plain/wine area to the east. The challenge then becomes conquering enough land in time. I fell short of this, since cyrus/sal DP'd and got rifling shortly thereafter before I could shake that free and bring my upgraded HA ---> cuirassers on cyrus (I'd bribed AC into judaism and he was even further ahead in tech).

The combination of the terrible land, forced terrible tech path, and likely religious situation (where we are forced into bad diplomacy) puts us in a tough spot. In order to win, you'll probably have to get one or both gem areas, IW in time, still get judaism, and hold off barbs which due to the amount of land aren't a total joke like they'd normally be. The reality of this is probably gambling on judaism going a bit later and getting another worker tech first...probably bronze working. If that gets done one can expand enough to be competitive.

Another possibility is a lucky early religious split. It's possible that judaism spreads more than hinduism, because the capitol is coastal and therefore anybody who has sailing has their capitol as part of the same plot group. If cyrus/AC go judaism (or even just one of them) EARLY in the game and a war breaks out, the map gets a lot easier.

Overall however this is a very challenging map and if mad gets unlucky he'll definitely fail (aka judaism goes before he can possibly get it, which can happen) or be placed in a very bad spot.

Looking forward to this rpc, its long time the Yehudim had their day in the sun so to speak. May Mads Medinat Yisrael live long and prosper. (or go crashing into the abyss, either ones good:lol:)

Spoiler :

My initial thoughts after playing a bit is the Mono/Jud path is very suboptimal. I don't know, maybe with a different leader it would be different. Regardless, it certainly is a challenge.

Re: TMIT's point above - what if we don't get Judaism? Keep re-starting, or capture the Holy City and refuse to adopt any other religion? King David captured Jerusalem from the Jebusites, after all. That might be OK if Judaism is founded on our continent, anyway...

In my experience, on such settings - Emp/large/epic - AI gets Mono at ~2600.
Very seldom before that.
You will get Mono at ~2700 by starting fishing first and working water tiles.
Also, you don't have incas and maya. Those two can get Mono REALLY fast
(from what I saw in my games)

ooops, missed TMIT post
Spoiler :

apparently this is a game when some AI was really determined... bummer.
It is easy to get Mono before 2725 bc but you need financial trait.

Looks kinda like Judea... :)

fine start...

dont go fishing, go straight for Mono and work the flood while building a worker... there is no other commerce tile you can work so it dossnt matter if you grow or not...

If you just click on monotheism without any other techs, you get there on turn 63 (64 turns starting at turn 0) before discounts. That is 2425 BC. Realistically you can get it a few turns faster ---->2500's BC. This is the earliest you can possibly get it.

Fishing first is about 1 turn slower (the work boats give you commerce) and ~2500 BC, so going there makes sense.

But note that regardless of what you do, if the AI prioritizes judaism, you lose instantly.

Lets hope he pops masonry from a hut then:lol:

Oh Ye non-believers! You must but your faith in the Jewish god and he shall deliver. Be weak and stumble and the great Jewah shalt find other poor smucks to lead.

Update is on it's way!

Oh Israel, The Promised Land: Abraham, the Founding Father

The Israeli poeple have been lost in the world, moving from place to place, the wandering peoples they were called. No home, no leader, no god, no sharp-witted comdian to pass the days. Their feet were dusty from walking the desert, they were hungry and thirsty, and no other peoples wanted them. EXILES from the world.

THEN

An old Man with an even older wife came amongst them "Follow me, and I shall lead you. For I have had a vision that a god, no THE god awaits his peoples on the coast. He hast proven this by granting my aged wife a child. There you shall be fed, there you shall be led, there you shall be loved, there you shall be entertained."

The Israelites were skeptical about this, however when they saw his decrepit and frankly hideous wife with child, well either there really was a god or this old man was truely insane. Either way the people figured the sands of the ocean has gotta be better than the sands of the desert, so they follow.

"Stop my people, and settle upon this river. Fresh water is provided from god above."

Abraham0000-1.jpg

The Israeli's we doubius about the god provided fresh water, "It comes from the damned mountain"

Sensing the reluctance of the people, Abraham ordered research of how to work the sea and feed the people. Harvesting weeds along the floodplain can only go so far.

Abraham is interrupted from his lecturing by a very formal lndividual.

Abraham0001-1.jpg

He also ordered a scouting party to explore the lands of which the Israili's were very reluctant to do. However, when they were told that free gold could be found from native huts, they fell over themselves dashing around the area.

They found 109 gold, but more importantly

Abraham0002-1.jpg

Abraham immediately starts building a fishing boat and starts researching Masonry as Polytheims has yet to be researched.

The productive Scout also happens upon a map

Abraham0003.jpg

As well as two more leaders

Abraham0000.jpg

Abraham0004.jpg

The Arab being the founder of Hinduism

The bee-line towards the discovery of Yahweh went Masonry/Polytheim/Monotheim. Abraham ordered the building of another boat but forced the Jews to work only commerce producing tiles, something that appeared to come natural from them.

Abraham0001.jpg

All this hard work of theIsraeli people, at the leadership of the revered ancient Abraham, and of course helped by the free gold they got, led to

Abraham0005.jpg

The founding of JUDAISM! The Jews fall on the ground, for they are now JEWS, and begin praying and begging their new found god to provide them with guidance, provide them with weapons to kill their enemies, provide them with gold.

Abraham became stern "People, you must earn all of this. You much work, and think, and expand. Yahweh has determined that all of this land is your's, but it must be taken with Blood and Sweat. I am old and can no longer lead you, however there will be another to lead you through you expansion. For now rest, pray, count, and prepare to expand. BUT, you must be able to defend yourselves."

Thus the Jews found their God at 2700 BC!

OK, so let's look at a map of this dustbowl.

Abraham0002.jpg

Two pretty decent city spots on the coast. I am thinking of archery then perhaps mining/BW followed by priesthood for the Oracle and possibly Monarchy. We have wine and alot of food right now. Sailing or the wheel for trade. we have yet to creat a worker but frankly I see no emergent need for one until bronze working for chopping.

So yeh of little faith, what say you now of the Jewish Nation, ISRAEL!

HA! Take THAT, you disbelievers!

Mad, you didn't . . . do anything like "cheating", did you? Hopefully all remains of the Satan game are gone, and that cheating is forbidden?

I am honest on when I cheat. Judaism was founded by simple good CIV playing and a little help from the goody Hut gods with early fishing!

EDIT: No reload either, worked the first time!

Yes, God helped you with that hut !

Judging from TNIT spoiler, Saladin was very close to beat you for Mono...

Btw, why not Fin leader ? Fits game well I think and would secure Mono easily.
