Fairy Tale

This mod places a number of Civilizations in a fairy tale world; a world with evil sorcerors, mighty trolls, noble and manly knights, nimble woodelves and hot babes in distress. Original? Bah! This ain't original in any way. No-no. Instead Fairy Tale shamelessly makes use of all common and well-known fantasy and fairy tale clichés to create a pot of humour, excitement and of course pure good old Civilization nationbuilding. This mod does not claim to be original or impressive, nor does it claim to be Fall from Heaven. It does claim to be fun and exciting.

SOME OF THE FAIRY TALE FEATURES

  • Diverse and unique civilizations; all with their own theme and style. All from Medieval European kingdoms and Fantasy-like dark nations to Barbarian skeleton civs and hot-babe amazon nations. All have their own units, leaders and culture.
  • Make use of everything from dragons, witches and magicians to regular medieval infantry and noble knights in the monumental Fairy Tale wars. Forge your Royal Guard to become the most renowned crack unit in the Known World. There are masses of unique units.
  • All civs have specific heroes that can travel the world and find adventure. Just like real Fantasy and Fairy Tale heroes.
  • Build your Royal Family and found a lasting dynasty!
  • The mod is playable on a great variety of maps; including hand-made scenario maps, as well as pre-made maps of Tamriel from the Elder Scrolls Series and Middle Earth from Tolkien's Trilogy! Included are also several map scripts that generate random maps. The huge "World of Fary Tale" map is the standard which has all the civs present!
  • Detailed Lore, storyline, background and world setting against which the whole game is played. This is an own universe.
  • Unique fairytale/fantasy music composed by Zero-Project.

INSTALLATION AND PLAYING

Fairy Tale is a mod for Civilization IV; Beyond the Sword 3.19.

To install, simply put the Fairy Tale folder in your Beyond the Sword Mod folder. The correct path for the installed folder should be C:/ProgramFiles/2KGames/FiraxisGames/CivilizationIV/BeyondTheSword/Mods.

To play the mod, start up Civilization as usual, and from the main menu choose "Advanced". Then choose "Load a Mod" and select "Fairy Tale" from the menu. The game then restarts, and when it has done so, select "Single Player Game". There are then three options on how to play the game.

1. The Scenario Version. Choose "Play a Scenario" in the menu. Pick any of the scenarios listed. All the pre-made scenarios for Fairy Tale describe a certain historical period in the Fairy Tale Lore or just highlight one of the mod's civilizations. The scenario "The World of Fairy Tale" puts all civs on a huge map of The Known World, which is the Fairy Tale land. You play as any of the nations and begin at the first settlement! The scenario "The Collective War" supplies a smaller map and you play as one of the contenders in the Great War between the Collective and the Free World. That map is perhaps best to start with.

2. Further Scenario Options. There are two other maps available in the Scenario Menu as well; Tolkien's Middle Earth and Tamriel from the Elder Scrolls. I added those for the fun of it and edited the starting positions on the maps to, in a way, align my civilizations to those two excellent fantasy worlds. The result wasn't quite proper in alignment between my world and the two others, but should indeed pose two interesting ways of play.

3. The Campaign Version begins a Fantasy-type game on a random map and takes you from the beginning of time, forward to the time when The Dowager Queen invaded the Free Lands. The map Script "Planet Generator 0.68" (found in the left-hand menu) is highly recommended for the campaign games, but other map scripts have been included as well. For an example, "Creation", which was used in FfH2, and creates a true Fantasy World. You can choose to play any one of the nations in Fairy Tale. Note that Planet Generator comes with a lot of choices for world creation!

Credits

I take pride in giving due credit where such is needed. The following work has been used in creating this mod. I sincerely hope I haven't forgotten anyone, or gotten anything of the following wrong, because that would make me feel really ashamed, since all of this (mostly artwork) is worth all credit in the world. Please excuse me in case anything is wrong here, and do tell me. Furthermore, I do try to use work from all the most prolific artists on the CivFanatics download page, since all of them make stuff that suits me and this mod. Some artists have become favourites of mine though. Special mention goes out to Danrell who produces large amounts of high-quality medieval units, SeZereth for his excellent Ogres and Trolls as well as other great medieval units. I also want to mention SaibotLieh who has female units as a trade. His hot ladies are most appreciated and this mod would be nothing without all the hot ladies, eh. Just check out the Norse Valkyries. He also made the Princess look fairy tale just because of my wishes. Zerver also does some really good stuff. But to all the artists generally - thanks for sharing, and keep it up.

Bernie14 made an excellent Norman Swordsman(http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=5784), and the Light Cavalry was made by Ajidica (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=10956). The Viking Warchief hero unit was created by SeZereth (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=3680).

The Explorer and archers are from teh same package as related above under Crystallin graphics. The Crossbowmen by Ahwaric, related under Elven Graphics. Most Denerean units were reskinned by myself; so that they have blue skin and wear black. The ship was made by Nuvoloblu (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=14189).

Just for the fun of it. The Crystal resource was supplied by Walter Hawkwood (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=12120).

Fairy Tale uses the terrain graphics from Chuggi's Better Graphics by Chugginator(http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=293656).

The Leader Portraits were made using the Computer Game Oblivion (and some Morrowind too!). I got tired of searching for copyright-free Fantasy art online, as there is none, and resorted to taking screenshots of characters I've played or created in Oblivion instead. The leader of Clan Crystallin, Socuzia, was actually the lady I beat Oblivion's Main Quest together with. Now she lives again. I got art that suited me far better than that :):):):) they demand money for online, and I see my Oblivion-pics as a small tribute as well to Bethesda's great Elder Scrolls series, which I have been following since Daggerfall.

The Fairy Tale music was composed by Zero-Project (http://www.zero-project.gr/). Watch the YouTube video also (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mcJjTWHWbo)! Can't you see that's Principality knights charging a mass formation of Namyri? The Diplomusic was compsed by various 19th century great composers. Sibelius, Tchaikovsky, Wagner, Chopin and Grieg.

Special Thanks

Le Sage's Special thanks go to Jennvare, Ajidica, VeBear and Krchak. Super special thanks, of course, to my modding buddy HighwayHoss, who keeps up a really good job with his HEFT updates of Fairy Tale and have made this a much more pleasant modding experience, thanks also to Zero-Project for his music. This mod would be nothing without you guys. Special thanks also to the nice guys and gals on the CivFanatics forums who have been most helpful. Notably EmperorFool and Phungus who patiently helped me with Python, SaibotLieh and The_J who have helped me on several occasions. Thanks also to all else within the lively and friendly Civ4 modding community and I hope I haven't forgotten anyone.

Thanks to Sid Meier, Firaxis and 2K for the best computer game in World History. Thanks to Bethesda for the best RPG's in World History, the Elder Scrolls games. Thanks to the CivFanatics, ModDB and StrategyInformer webites. A Mega Thanks to all the thousands who have downloaded and played this mod.

Last, but not least. Thanks to my Sweetie. She gets to listen to stories about troll squadrons, elves and viking warlords all day, and although she doesn't understand half of it, she lets me nerd on with this sort of stuff.

Looks cool. I'll try it out when the newer versions come out - too much else to play at the moment

played a bit and suffered a CtD, game crash at diplomancy screen of a wood elf drinking a beer...

this game needs lots of work if you want to make this game look very good...
-Get some custom music for this game, both for diplo and main music you can hear
-need new ages
-need new button art... anything that does not look very vanilla
-need a good mechanic in this game, similar to Planetfall's Planet Attitude, or Fall from Heaven 2 armeggedon system
-need a lot of bug fixes
-need more custom unit models

I have not experienced any bugs or CTDs.

I did think that the Fairy Tale scenario was going to have events/event text to guide the story and make it "fairy-tale-ish". As of right now, I'm just kind of doing my own thing and not really feeling a "part of the story."

But definitely good work so far. :)

Thank you all for your comments and feedback. As I state clearly, this is a work in the starting stages, and it will continually grow. There's a lack of fantasy units to add though, and I hope to interest artists in doing more such for download.

I dunno what your CtD is about there, Darkedone02. In my playtesting the drinker has always been present in all of my games and never caused any trouble other than being only annoying. I'll try to see if there's something wrong in his dialogue... Anyone else had CtD problems with him? What were the other bugfixes you were referring to?

Oh. The wonders of File Front. Here's an alternative download link.

Does anyone know any stable and good file sharing websites online where I could host Fairy Tale and my other mods?

Or wait. Did you mean you can't extract the files from its packed state? The download is in regular .rar format. It can be easily extracted with WinRAR.

Does anyone know any stable and good file sharing websites online where I could host Fairy Tale and my other mods? ...The download is in regular .rar format.

I have had good luck with mediafire. If you upload a large file, it is worthwhile to immediately download it and make sure the upload was not corrupt. That has happened to me several times; but once it is there, the server itself is fast and stable. I think a lot more people use "zip" than "rar".

Thanks a bunch, Davidlallen! I'll try Mediafire then. FileFront is supposed to be OK and supposed to be meant for games and their mods as well. Noone has really complained about it before, buut it's worthwhile to keep a secondary download as well. I could have the secondary one in .zip as well.

Hey, Kid Anubis. Does it conflict with your game? I haven't quite started on the civilopedia. I want to erase all other units from the Civilopedia and only keep the Fairy Tale units and game concepts in there. I'm not quite sure how to do that yet. Civilopedia is a secondary priority though, but I'd really like to write it, since it builds the lore around the game. And I'm creating a story just as much as I'm creating a game, I believe.

This is what is in the Works

Fairy Tale will be gradually expanded. The priority now is to make the game work well and to make it exciting, playable and fun. In that respect, I am working on more scenarios and maps. The next installment will have at least one more scenario as well as one more map (Manifold's Middle Earth), because those two are already prepared and done for release 0.2.

What I am not doing at the moment is adding units or music. Fairy Tale may have a minimum of new units, yes, but I am not going to add hundreds of units just to be impressive and big. I am adding units that I use and that expand the game experience or make their civilizations look the part, not units that only expand file size. The same goes for music. I've seen mods on downloads of hundreds of megs with really bad diplomusic that sounds no better than Justinian's vanilla.
