Welcome to the second installment of the One City Challenge Club. This is a simple hosted OCC group of games for you all to play out if you wish. I may or may not join. Remember to keep you games in spoilers.

This week we have Ramesses which has the other real powerful OCC Trait, Industrious! The Spiritual trait is also very useful as it helps with diplomacy. The UB offers 2 early priest slots which can be be leveraged for the OCC game. The UU is well known and fairly powerful if a very early unit.

The map is a Big/Little map and was the first I generated, I made one slight modification in worldbuilder shown here

Spoiler :

Simply moved horses just a little closer so you can get them in the second border pop rather than the third.

Otherwise it's as was randomly produced

The save is a Nobel difficulty/Epic speed and the WorldBuilder save is also attached if you want to change those settings. Remember I plan to be moving the difficulty up as we go along in the series, nobel for now.

General statements about a One City Challenge, according to Mad Scientist

1) You get ONE city! Go and win yourself a game champ!

2) You cannot build a settler, nor can you capture a city. Captured cities will autoraze, a great way for ticking off a rival.

3) You are allowed 5 National Wonders per city, and they still require the prerequisite buildings. Example, for the Globe theater you need a theater, Oxford requires a University. etc....

There are plenty of players that can offer great advice, I will keep to just hosting this game for the time being.

Examples of OCC games can be found in the Classic RPCs in my signature: Agustus, Stalin, Lincoln were all OCC games focusing on diplomacy, military, space victory pathes although the Lincoln game was a last minute failure. Also under the RPC Next Generation the dali Lama was an OCC but certainly not a typical game.

So onto the leader

Bow and cower at the feet of the God-King!

And the map

well, well, well! Forrests and floodplains with marble! Interesting.

Enjoy

That's looking Parthenon - GL - farmed floodplains to me. perhaps a waste, but GP heaven.

I'll have to give this one a try, map looks allright. It's gonna be my first time playing a game that others play at the same time, I can't wait to see the differences.

Edit : Considering I now play prince moved up form noble 5-6 games ago, should I play it noble or prince??. I've read an OCC is usually a level below.

Spoiler :
rushing has been rendered virtually impossible unless you get lucky with timing. I have not twice.

I might do a noble opening like this:

Spoiler :

Pottery for cottages, run 2 scientists ASAP for an academy
Oracle to COL
Pyramid (representation)
TOA
Math (Hanging garden)
Build Confu shrine
Calendar (MOM)
Anesth (Parthenon)
Literature (GL and NE)
Drama (Globe)
Civil service (Bureau)
MC (Forge)
Music (free GArtist)
Paper-Edu
Start golden age and generate some GS
Lib-Biology (national park)
Steel (Iron work)
AL (factory)
.
.
.

Where's the food (and health!)? Obviously, marble wonders are going to be a priority. As long as we can get even a bit of production, wonderspamming looks like the order of the day. Hope the neighbors are nice!

Huh, I might try this. I actually played 4 or 5 OCCs as Ramesses this past weekend, didn't do well in any of them, but this looks like a better start than any of the ones I had!

Spoiler :
Noble/Epic

Played it out to a 1916 Space Victory.

Great early research but horrible production. Worse than the last one in my opinion. Early health was brutal, even with the early +3 herbal event, so I beelined the National Park. A mistake again since there is no Aluminum to be found.

Also, copper was way out there and iron & uranium were MIA. Some strategic resources in the outermost ring would be greatly helpful in these. That way you also have to prioritize some culture buildings to get those outermost border pops.

White Dragon

Spoiler :

I know fewer resources, but that was what the random resource generator gave us!

I just took the non WB save.

1924 space.

Spoiler :

Settled in place. Lots of food is handy. I went very unconventional mysticism ----> masonry ----> Poly (actually got hindu?!) ----> mono. Built gwall/henge/mids/ToA, took civil service with oracle, and then it was off to the effortless races vs garbage AI.

The one thing in this game that really, really pissed me off is that same-religion charlemagne DoW'd me since he switched religions and went WHEOOHRN in the turn before I could switch myself. On top of this, he IGNORED his WORST ENEMY Pacal to declare on me. This ghey garbage BS is a big problem at high levels.

On this level, it meant he bumped his 3-4 units + catapults into several muskets, which promptly killed his stack. He bribed vicky in too so I bribed them both out.

The die was cast though on this garbage. He would DoW *AGAIN*, and again muskets would completely rape his elephant/mace/treb nonsense. Then, I was sufficiently pissed.

He could go to hell, rotting in his stupid ass war for the rest of the game. With military always a step ahead, I used about 15 units to repeatedly smash his inbound stacks with ~combat IV and V while I generally ignored the fact that I was at war otherwise.

The AI cheats. Badly. Even on noble. Here we see it flagrantly, since after killing 100's of units he had about -4 war . Can you imagine what happens to a HUMAN player on ANY difficulty if they lose 100-150 troops in territory that is 100% foreign? Yeah, the >1000 WW ass rape would be completely crippling. Seeing as how he didn't have constitution and that I had mids, he had neither police state nor jails to alleviate this and still had less than 5 war  for pretty much the entire game in his largest cities. I will be sure to correct people if they say noble AIs don't get major advantages (upgrades AND this?).

Not that it mattered. I'm sure this slowed the global tech pace a bit (though I had permatrades with pacal, KK, and mansa, who were all friendly) and the EP missions against me hurt slightly, but I thought it would be more fun to go for 100's of kills rather than just sit there and let this cheating garbage that only had the opportunity to happen due to broken diplo continue w/o some revenge.

Tech path was lib ---> bio, set up national park, go environmentalism, then straight to superconductors, then rocketry, then AL, then remaining space techs. Even without aluminum the 250% production bonuses were easily enough. I didn't bother with internet...it wouldn't have given me a damned thing I cared about. Space elevator would have been a waste of my time too.

Though I did tech robotics. After launching. This was to allow me to upgrade my super infantry (and build more with combat IV) into mechinf and start burning some of charlie's rifle cities. I managed to sack aachen before the ship landed. Take that and go to hell you douche fage idiot. Whose capitol BURNED? YOURS! Haha!

National wonders: Globe, NP, NE, IW (Traded mansa for iron), and of course oxford.

I'd have traded for aluminum too, if any of the AI could have gotten there in time for it to matter (or at all). I did found mining inc and trade it up to +5 or +6 hammers with spare gold.

All in all w/o war 1800's finish would probably have been done, but the beatdown was more satisfying after the game's sloppy code reared its head and I WASN'T on a level where that's just a big FU.

TMIT

That was some eloquant write up!

Spoiler :

Ghenghis on Pangea is the next OCCC, I can hand pick Charlie if you like so you can get some vengence! But looks like you took care of shop on your own here!

1822 Diplomatic victory
Spoiler :
Burger King and Pacal turned Buddhist, everybody east of that went Hindu, and Roosevelt was Jewish. I made a point of playing nice and wonderspamming(and I popped pottery from a hut!), so I got the Great Library at around 400 bcish, I think, and any significant wonder fell to me, except for the AP, or I could have pulled off a cheap win faster. Well, I continued to play nice, and eventually, I noticed that I could shift to Hindusim and make more friends that way. So I did, and I took Pacal along. I folded like cardboard to every demand, and lo and behold, diplo win. It's my first OCC and also my first OCCC, so I'm very satisfied. I'm a building spammer at heart, so I enjoyed it immensely. Not that used to Epic though. Thanks for a fun game, but I settled 1 west, meaning I was oilless. It was very painful, having it so close yet out of reach by 1 tile!

I played the standard save - needed a soft game after this week. Annoying though - what a pain our nearby neighbor was.

Spoiler :

Same BS as TMIT - Charlie constantly DOWing me, and his spies were ridiculous - the stupid oil well got destroyed at least 20 times, despite my spies trying to protect it, plus counter missions.

I got back at him a bit though - kept forcing him into pacifism to cripple his economy and also kept switching him into my religion (which was shared with pacal and mansa).

Basic wonderspamming game - built probably 75% of wonders. Razed a couple of charlie's cities just because he annoyed me.

And a reminder why this game is so fabulous:

Civ4ScreenShot0000-16.jpg

After Mansa asked me to stop trading with him, I obliged, and that's what he had to say - busted out laughing over that one! I was ready for lib here:

Civ4ScreenShot0001-13.jpg

But delayed it for this:

Civ4ScreenShot0003-11.jpg

National park, tons of specialists, blah blah blah. Production sucked, so it was a slow space race. Should have workshopped some of the farms for hammers. Oh well. No one else was close:

And at the end - the power of the settled specialist economy:

Civ4ScreenShot0005-10.jpg

Looking forward to genghis - that'll be a fun one.

@ TMIT

There's a cap on AI war weariness at all levels, although I'm not sure if it varies by diff. You can't wear down the AI with it...although you should be able to. It would cut down on some of the nonsense AI wars and also the obsolete SOD suicides against superior units.

Maybe you already know about the ww cap, it was difficult to tell reading your write-up. Very...uh...colorful reading, though. ;)

Spoiler :
1995 Space Race Victory.

Had no real problems in this game. Pascal founded Judaism and Charlesmagne and I both switched. The Jewish block lasted until the space race had begun. Although much of the rest of the world disliked me, I kept my two neighbors at pleased or friendly the whole game. As a result, no wars and no one to distract me from launching my ship.

As a side note, the AI techs so slowly on Noble. I took Assembly Line with my free Liberalism tech.

Immortal/Normal Space Vic 1921

Spoiler :

Well reading some of the other spoilers I had no trouble with Charlie. :) He founded Bud which I converted to as soon as it was spread to me. Being the nice person I am though I founded conf from the Oracle, and spread the misionary to pacal who didn't have a religion at the time. So though Charlie and Pacal managed a few wars over the years I kept out of all of them.

Basically I built loads of wonders and ran lots of specs. Misses out on Lib to mansa. I thought I had time to beeline to Economics for the GM (success) but just missed out on Lib. :)

I actually cottaged a few of the flood plains early on and went for an early globe theatre to combat the lack of happies and paid for as much health resources as I could get to combat the unhealthy. Towards the end I chopped all the forests out of the BFC and workshopped/water milled as much as I could without dropping the food bar.

Solved the lack of aluminium by gifting around Indust as soon as I could and my good friend Charlie (permanent dp with him except when he was in a war which was a lot of the time  ) was kind enough to let me have some which sped up the ship build a lot and I launched with all parts except 1 engine, although I would have had time to build it as I was well clear of Mansa/Charlies efforts.

Ship Launching. Not many forests left in the shot.

OCCRamessesIISpaceLaunch0000.jpg

Thanks for hosting this MS.

Bad news with 3 turns until spaceship lands...
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0013.JPG

Spoiler :
I launched with all the spaceship parts except 1 fuel. This took 18 turns to land. How long would it have taken with 2? Considering it would have taken 10 to build it.

I need to look at the screenshots above to how I should have setup my city for spaceship production. I left it the same as early which is probably why I lost

0 out of 2 OCCC so far :P

Won a late ~1940 space victory on noble
One thing I tried was to single-warrior rush Charlemagne (of course this doesn't work on monarch and higher). On turn 10 he was gone, and there was a whole bunch of land at the west of Thebes which I was eagerly watching while cursing madscientist for having made this game an OCC

@ Champinoman

It would have taken 15 turns with 2 engines (this is epic right ?) so in any case you would've been too late
