Nice pics dudes. I'm an amateur photographer at best, but love taking pics. I'm supposed to be working on a freelance project, but screw that, I'm gonna post some pics instead.

All pictures taken in various parts of southern Patagonia (the most beautiful place on this planet). I was gonna post pics from my other collections, but there's already a bunch here.. don't wanna overdo it.. will post more later :)

edit: pics taken with a fujifilm finepix1000fd non-slr 10mp camera

^ How does the iceberg get to be blue? Or is that a reflection of the sky?

Great photos, everyone - but please put the large ones in spoiler tags - or better yet, resize them so we can see the whole picture at once, without a lot of scrolling around! :)

^ How does the iceberg get to be blue? Or is that a reflection of the sky?

I had the exact same question when we finished our hike and noticed how blue the thing was.. Nobody could answer my question there, but I looked it up as soon as I get home.

Basically, the long wavelength part of light (orange/red) gets absorbed by the ice and all that comes through are the short wavelength (blue) parts..

Check this out:

I don't think my pictures fully captured how blue and amazing the thing looked, but you kinda get an idea with the pic above

Oh and it's a glacier, not an iceberg :)

I had no idea Patagonia had such spectacular scenery. :)

And that ice may be a glacier now, but by the looks of things in your second photo, part of it is about to become an iceberg... :p

Awesome! I'd been thinking about starting a photography thread too. I just bought a DSLR (Nikon D90) a couple months ago, and am in the process of learning my way around that.

I've managed to get some pretty cool photos with my compact (a little Minolta) over the years. Here are some of my favorites, all at photobucket's large (640px × 480px) size, with the number of photos in each spoiler in brackets.

It is quite beautiful. The only places in the world that I know of that could beat it in terms of beautiful scenery are New Zealand and maybe Costa Rica.

And that ice may be a glacier now, but by the looks of things in your second photo, part of it is about to become an iceberg... :p

Not really! Check out what it looks like from a distance (I would say this picture was taken about a 5-6 hour long hike away from where the other picture was taken)

Other picture was taken from a boat, so I get how it could look like an iceberg.. but the whole glacier is slowly receding :(

I went for a walk yesterday and got some interesting photos. I've put them in spoiler tags to not take up the whole page.

Very nice Adria, I really like the foggy November pictures, and Europe.

Those glacier pictures were nice, Warpus.

I was a bit interested in photography myself (in the way of catching stuff that my eyes seem to like watching) but spent more time searching for a good motive than taking pictures. What's feels impressive for the eye doesn't always make a good picture imo, e.g. getting to a high point with a good view of the whole city a sunny day can be quite boring as a picture. The eyes also have a tendency to focus on something but that's not the way you look at the picture afterwards. I found myself trying to "unfocus" and take in everything I can see (or what would make it to the picture). Furthermore, a lot of good views are easy to miss because they are on spots between A and B, on places where you would not normally stop. Other places in a city are very noisy which unconsciously made me dismiss them. And then there's the small problem that the camera have 20/20 sight which I don't...

^ One of the best things about digital cameras is that it doesn't cost anything (except space on your memory card) to experiment. Sometimes things that don't look impressive to the naked eye can look interesting if framed correctly. Conversely, as you pointed out, things that look great in person don't necessary photograph well. You just have to take photos and see what works for you. For all the photos I keep, I discard at least as many.

And don't be discouraged if some people don't like them; everyone likes different subjects and compositions. Some of my favorite photos aren't necessarily the photos in my collection that other people really like.
