Civ Fans Everywhere!!!!!

Ok, all of you Civ fans out there, what's your favorite Civ 4 Civ. All civs are allowed from Vanilla, Warlords, or BTS. I'll keep this poll open for 2 months (1 month per group) and move the top 10 to a new vote. After that (now this is assuming that this is a widescale sucess) I will cut it down to the Final 3, and after all of that is said and done, we will have the most popular Civ in Civ 4.

This is Group 1. Group 2 will come out when this poll is done in on May 18. The top 10 out of both polls total will advance. So, 8 can come from Group 1 and 2 can come from Group 2, or vise versa.

NOTE: You may vote in both groups. This is also a one vote poll. If you like multiple, pick your fav.

So vhere are all of the civs from G onvards?

I'm playing as Aztecs at the moment and having one hell of a time "being Monty". There's nothing like sacrificing your own population on altars and fighting wars from the dawn of time to the dusk of time. The moment my bruised and battered opponent capitulates, I start thinking: "OK, who's next?"

So far I've crushed Asoka, Wang Kon, Tokugawa, and now it's Hannibal's turn. Meanwhile Shaka and Gilgamesh are staring wide-eyed at the carnage, desperately clutching their crumpled and sweatty defensive pacts. As if a piece of paper will spare them of the serpent god's coils!

England would probably be my "sensible" pick, but for the sheer fun factor, I'm picking the Aztecs. Jaguar Warriors are pretty amazing too, especially when you don't get copper or iron to start with.

Egypt for me! War Chariots are the ducks nuts.

I have had LOTS of fun with culture as Pericles. Creative for border pops, Philosophical for doubling the birth rates of great people, Odeons getting 3 culture per turn as the UB, the list goes on. Suffocating cities as that civ is a grand old time.

I picked Ethiopia for all of their useful, cheap, early buildings, and their awesome UU. Zara also just looks really chill in the leaderhead.

Cyrus for early game and warfare. Their UU is, in my opinion, one of the best in the game, and their UB comes in handy too. Cyrus' traits are the best combo possible for open warfare. I am currently playing a REALLY fun game where there have been wars going on for about 1000 years now, in which I occasionally take part. Cyrus is kicking butt... I have 6 GG's so far, and am well on my way to a seventh. And it's barely 1000 AD.

I have to say, though, that Pericles, Willem Van Oranje, and Wang Kon come in a lose second for me. I realize Wang Kon might be a rare pick, but his traits are nice for games where you want to be left alone for as long as possible. I generally go for a SR victory with him.

It's not on here, but my favorite civ is the the Incas. Huey's combination of industrial and financial is good for cultural victories, among other things. By pumping out large numbers of Qunchas very early in the game, it is often possible to wipe out several of your nearby rivals before they had access to metals. This is particularly a good idea if a highly agressive leader (like shaka or ragnar) is your neighbor, since wiping them out before they can become a threat makes your life much easier later on, as well as giving you lots of room to expand. capturing another civs capital early in th game does saddle you with high matinence costs, but this is somewhat ameliorated by the financial trait. This puts you in a good position to being cottage spaming, which gives you the money to keep up in the tech race, especially at higher difficulty levels.

My first game was Louis I think. (Random leader)

I couldn't work out why my borders weren't expanding for about 3 games afterwards

My first game was Willem and I had the same problem, plus some confusion about the number of commerce icons I should be seeing on certain tiles (that's what I get for buying a used copy without the manual).

Any suggestions? I have played solely as Bismarck, but I would like to try another leader. I do love my warring.

Boudica (or as TMIT would say, bootycall) of the Celts would be my current favorite. Why? With Aggressive and Charismatic, her units can get extremely powerful in terms of rank after just a few skirmishes. Plus, Charismatic doubles as a great trait for warmongering and for a boost in economy/production.

From this list, Carthage. The Cothon is a very good UB, especially if it can be paired with the Great Lighthouse. Opening techs are useful off the bat, especially with seafood in the capital's bfc. Numidian Cavarly is a top 5 UU IMHO. And the only leader, Hannibal, has two upper tier traits in Financial and Charismatic. Very solid civ.

Just took a peek at the poll results so far. Aztecs are doing well, as they should (slavers loooove the Sacrificial Altar). Two votes for America? Three solid leader choices and nice starting techs, but the uniques come far too late to be all that useful. England doing well, as always (solid mid-game UU and UB, and three good leaders - particularly Liz). Byzantum's strong showing is surprising. Cataphracts are nice, but the opening techs are meh, and Justinian is sorta meh; why the love?

For me personally, looking at the poll, I kinda expected Greece to fire to the top. I mean, with 2 really strong leader choices, Alexander for war, Pericles for cultural domination, and with a great UU, kicking butt in early wars before their enemies can counter it. But, that's just me. And what do I know, I just made the poll....

I love Carthage. Fin+Chm is great during wars, and the history behind Carthage is cool too.
