My Thoughts:
After years holding it off I am finally going to take my hand at modding Civ4 I finally decided to start and get going with bringing my own vision of the civilization game to the community.
One mod I always have played has been Quot Capita. Avain combines his ethnic VD mod with an expanded epic game which just like other mods such as Legends of Revolution, feel like a official expansion in terms of the changes to the core gameplay.
Another mods I have played were Chiyu's extra, which adds things from official firaxis scenarios or other games in the Civilization series, or Rise of Mankind, a massive epic mod much like Rise and Rule was for Civ3, a mod which like Fall from Heaven has its own modding community all to itself.
I have played other mods in the past by talented people such as Amra. I have felt that all of these mods had something in them that was fantastic, but I always felt when playing one how cool it would be to have features the others had included.
My Vision:
Awile ago I told Avain I intended on making a modmod of his work. What I want to do with it is as follows:
New Important Civilizations: I feel there are a few civilizations that had many accomplishments but are glossed over or forgotten in Civ4 currently, or even in general.
-Iroquois: This civilization was included in vanilla Civ3 back in the day. The Iroquois were the strongest civilization in the new world north of mexico to my knowledge, and had a complex social structure, including even a constitution of sorts. In Civ4 all the native american civilizations which are not mesoamerican or Incan were lumped into a generic "Native American Empire". I thought this was a bad move on Firaxis' part.
-Lakota: Aka the Sioux. This is basicly the Native American civilization as it currently exists. The only difference is that I will be changing their UB, as the totem pole was built by the North West coast tribes like the Haida, not by anyone else to my knowledge. The Lakota are included for a number of reasons, included is the fact they handed the US military perhaps its biggest defeat of all time.
Phoenicians:
History: The Phoenicians were a powerful maritime civilization in the canaan region. They were explorers and merchants and had a collection of city states which traded extensively for centuries along the Mediterranean. Much of what the ancient greeks, and other people in what became the hellenistic world came orginally from these adventurious people, including what became the greek alphabet, the basis for our own written language today.
Gameplay: I read that Phoenican vessels had stronger sails than ships during the time of columbus. Therefore I think I will implement the following.
Unique Unit: Bireme: This predecessor of the Trireme was invented by the Phoenicans. It will replace the Galley. I am thinking it should be able to enter oceans early, if that is deemed to overpowered than maybe a massive speed boast or passenger carrying boast would suffice.
Unique Building: Phoenican Port: A harbor that will give sea units built in the city additional expierience in addition to the standard harbor bonuses.
Leader: Ithobaal I: One of the most successful and powerful kings in Phoenican history. During his reign, Tyre expanded Phoenican power on the mainland and founded numerious colonies all along the meditarean region. This would make him a good economic and military leader I suppose.
Teotihuacan: Perhaps the most successful and powerful civilization in the new world, Teotihuacan has a history shrouded in mystery. What is known is that in its height, the city was the center of a cosmopolitan empire which rivaled ancient rome in size. The influence of the Teotihuacan people greatly shaped the Mayans as well as its own successor civilizations, such as the Aztecs or Toltecs.
Unique Unit: Mirror Warrior(I need a better name): Teotihuacan soldiers used light to blind their enemies in battle, and finish them off after with spears or atl-atl. This tactic was something the mayan city states were largely unprepared for. Replaces the swordsman.
Unique Building: Codex: Replaces libruary. Codex give more culture than libraries, doubling in that aspect in addition to the boast to a city's research.
Leader: Fire is Born: The son of the Teotihuacan king known as Spearthrower Owl, Fire is Born lead many of the successful campaigns against the Mayans and may have even founded a Mayan dynasty. A militant and organized leader.
Benin: One of the most powerful empires in north western africa. Orginated as a powerful city state in the region but under the rule of Ewuare the Great during the mid 15th century, it grew into an empire.
Leader: Ewuare the Great: Expanded the power of Benin into an empire and was the first ruler in the empire's golden age. A creative and expansionistic leader.
Unique Unit: Assegai: Replaces axeman in the Benin Arcenal. I will have to do more research to determine whatever bonuses the unit should have.
Unique Building: Fortifications: One of the keys to Benin dominance in the region was the extent to which the cities of the empire were fortified. Replaces walls(obviously).
