After the utter, catastrophic fail that was my attempt to control the Mediterranean as the Phoenicians (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=364785), I've decided to try something totally different. As the Portugese, I'm going to try and recreate to the best of my abilities, the entire historical Portuguese Empire based upon the following map:
Spoiler :
20090105004926!The_Portuguese_Empire.png
(I will also be going for East Timor).
And if I get the historical victory, great, but if not maybe I could try for a conquest victory? Who knows?

Anyway, if I try for the latter, I'm gonna need a lot of help from you guys

Also, I used the 3000 BC autoplay start, just to see what sort of awesomeness would ensue. Let's find out:

Part 1: Libson

As always, Libson is founded on the spot, and send my Tireme to explore the vast stretches of Europe's Atlantic coast:

Isabella refuses to open borders, so I grovel and beg, and eventually convert to Catholicism:

51048237.jpg

After I give her Divine Right, she finally starts to see things my way. I can now send my second settler to set up our first colony, in historic Ceuta:

55323459.jpg

Zara Yaqob is a pretty cool guy. Eh trades calendar and doesn't afraid of anythign;

50864731.jpg

Ceuta is up and running. Now all we have to worry about is that pesky Spanish culture, but we'll soon fix that ;):

Spoiler :

Um, no:

36125832.jpg

And here goes our next colony, in Mina. Things are looking good. Next up: Angola!

Spoiler :

So far so good. Let's see how this turns out...

Do you intend to get a Defensive Pact with Espanha (Spain) to represent the Uniao Iberica (Iberian Union)?
I'm going to try, if I can make Phillip II like me enough. It's gonna be tough though.

Anyhow:

Part 2: The Infancy of an Empire

There was an indy city here, but the Ethiopians were kind enough to raze it for me, allowing me to settle. Angola is up and running:

54790379.jpg

In the hopes of someday becoming an official ally of Spain, I elect to declare war on Arabia. I'll be conquering part of their lands soon anyway:

66868121.jpg

Meanwhile, I discover Optics, and build a bunch of Caracks, which I send to make a beeline to Brazil:
Spoiler :
55065829.jpg

Sao Paulo, my first Brazilian city, is built in the early 17th century. Right on schedule:

Freakin' Dutch...oh well, they'll pay for this one day...
Spoiler :

TO BE CONTINUED O_O

You know, your science could have really benefited from founding Oporto and La Coruna...it's kinda rare for Spain not to found the latter. The West African city is a waste of maintenance so early on--it would have been much better if you founded it after astronomy (due to free buildings).

lol I don't even know where those are .-.
but I'm kind of a n00b at this game anyway, and don't actually know what I'm doing a lot of the time :crazyeye: But thanks for the feedback, it's exactly what I need. Also update tonight if I have time.

Good luck!

PS.: It's Portuguese, not Portugese!

asdfsadfadf

But why is it Portuguese if the country's name is Portugal? meh.

Also, it looks like I'm gonna get almost no use out of resettlement, since most of my colonies have been founded by other people. Oh well. Time for war!!!!!1 (but not yet)

So anyway, it looks like in order to get all the colonies, I'll eventually have to attack:
  • Japan
  • Mongolia(?)
  • China(?)
  • the Khmer
  • India (by extension, Britain)
  • France
  • the Dutch
  • and Ethiopia
funfunfun :p

In the meantime, time for an update:

Part 3: The Growth of an Empire

It's party time:

10814327.jpg

I thought this would prevent anarchy while I switched to resettlement. Oops :

After bringing in some missionaries and Musketmen from Europe and Africa respectively, my Angolan settler founded our first settlement in Mozambique:

97119426.jpg

So Turkey attacked England or something in the 1750s and this happened. Fortunately, Portugal did not participate in World War I:
Spoiler :

This thing freakin' blew my economy through the roof. Feels good man:

76459296.jpg

That city wasn't there a few turns ago. How the f:bts: did Spain settle inside my cultural boundaries?:

43373629.jpg

In 1778 American rebels overthrew their English oppressors blah blah blah revolutionary war blah blah blah Washington blah blah blah constitution. It actually doesn't affect me at all :P
Also, America might be the only country I never end up DoW-ing:

88946698.jpg

I'm actually off to a good start here. On the other hand, my goal for getting all of the colonies is 1999, which is when Portugal lost Macao IRL. We'll see how close I get...
(tbc)

You're so dead now...Isabella hates proximity. Make sure you garrison Lisboa securely to prevent an exile. La Coruna is nominally Spanish so your culture probably lapsed there even though its culture is primarily Portuguese.

  1. Isabella isn't the leader in Dawn at this point, it's Phillip II.
  2. Spain loves me. They have like -6 from close borders and refusing war, but everything else is green. Frankly, I'd be surprised if they DoW's any time soon.

Also, I'm thinking of moving my capital to Sao Paulo just in case god forbid a war with Spain does occur. Is this a good idea or a horrible one?

Switching your capital causes instability, so i preferd you to just garrison lisboa.

PS. In your phoenican story, one of the reasons you collapsed was that you switched your capital twice times:nono:

Also, it takes a long time to build a palace/get a GE to build it. And Lisbon is the centre of your empire, you need to have a lot of colonises in the East and one massive one (Brazil) in the West. Have you remembered to settle the Azores?

I'm saving the small islands for last. I might just build settlers to take them while I'm attacking someone else.

"I WILL BE THE MASTER OF WHAT IS MINE OWN. [Brazil] is my goods, my chattles, my house, my household stuff, my field, my barn, my horse, my ox, my anything!"
(i.e. im gonna kick the Dutch out of Brazil)

Part 4: The Portuguese Wars

First, I prepare my army, as Mina colony celebrates one of Portugal's most important national holidays:

30265261.jpg

Then, nationalism so I can get occupation:

72820728.jpg

Awwwwww yeahhhhh :D:

38121717.jpg

I'm running out of time. It's now or never:

34652278.jpg

Just as I'm about to rampage into Dutch Brazil, something interesting happens. I guess the rules are different with Meiji in charge.
Spoiler :
76483586.jpg

In the 1890s, a bunch of Sao Paulo cannon brigades met with some rifle squads up north. Together, they charged into Adriaansz fort, ousting the Dutch from Brazil for good:
Spoiler :
28437464.jpg

Finally, after getting DoW'd on by India and France, I convince Willem to make peace. I now have only 95 years left to get my other colonies:
Spoiler :
24897724.jpg

Forget 1999; it looks like I'm gonna lose to a British time victory before I can even get everything. Oh well. I'll just have to keep going after the end of history I guess. To be continued...

So we're getting close to the end of history here. While it's doubtful I'll get to east Asia in time, I'm still going to see if I can mop up India and my Arabian colonies, in addition to those useless little islands in the Atlantic.

Part 5: The Uberfleet

It's time to get the rest of my island colonies. Cape Verde is first, founded just off the coast of French West Africa:

55aa.jpg

Meanwhile, that obnoxious former-Soviet-Ethiopian city finally flips to me. I don't need a colony down there though :p:
Spoiler :
55bm.jpg

Ponta Delgada was actually one of Portugal's first colonies IRL. I lol'd:

55ce.jpg

Eh. It's worth it to get the Uniao Iberica underway:

55du.jpg

So I totally forgot about Portugal's historic Mombasa colony. Fortunately, Zanzibar just declared its independence from the dying Ethiopian empire. Maybe I can give it a better home:

55ea.jpg

And with that, the last of my Atlantic colonies is founded (I'll get Guinea last of all: I'll need to attack Spain to get it, and I don't want to break up with him any sooner than absolutely necessary:

55fi.jpg

Just as Madeira goes up, my uberfleet reaches the Indian Ocean. My plan: attack both the Ottomans and their Indian vassals at once, thereby plunging the world into the Second World War and seizing Muscat and Cochin simultaneously. On one side: me, England, Spain, and their vassals; on the other, the Ottomans, their vassals, and possibly Mongolia and Russia:
Spoiler :
55g.jpg

Who will win? Check back next time to find out!

Wouldn't you have to declare on France to get Guinea to take it from French West Africa?

Yeah. But Spain owned it earlier, and I got confused. But w/e, smart decisions didn't get me where I am today, as you will soon see...

Part 6: Moshe Dayan's War of Fail

At first, things seemed to be going so well. I had negotiated a defensive pact with Russia and Mongolia, meaning my only enemies in the war would be Turkey and India. My eastern uberfleet landed just south of Cochin without any trouble:

20521981.jpg

Simultaneously, the western fleet landed outside of Muscat:

51877034.jpg

By the skin of their teeth, both troops managed to capture their targets in the same turn:

14179410.jpg

However, both cities found themselves under constant attack from their respective neighboring countries, and Muscat in particular seemed to be getting hit especially hard. It would only be a matter of time before the Portuguese defenses in both cities broke down. I needed to make peace fast:

50041905.jpg

However, it was too late. Portuguese forces in Muscat were overwhelmed by the Turks, who retook the city with an endless flood of tanks, artillery, and infantry. I ordered all of my troops to regroup in Cochin. Also global warming:

89831361.jpg

This is when the shipment of fail arrived. With all of my troops stationed in Cochin, the Ottomans offered peace. I hastily accepted, eager for the barrage of Indian troops attacking Cochin to cease. I made peace and signed a ten-turn peace treaty with both nations while completely ignoring the fact that Cochin was entirely cut off from the ocean. My massive invasion force was trapped in Southern India. I couldn't declare war, nor could I open borders to let them out:

I swear to god i suck so bad at this game sometimes. At this rate, I won't even get Malacca. I'm done for tonight. I'll finish this up tomorrow or something. Stay tuned ><*

If you were playing a regular Civ game you would have won. But RFC has this little mechanism of making techs more expensive the more cities you have beyond 10...so with your tech level you can't possibly hold onto coastal/nonproductive cities.
You should have decimated their main stacks with your nukes and espionage first before attacking.
Flying promoted troops in immediately after capturing a city is usually a good thing.
