I got a hold of a lot of articuls. This ones from September 1982....

Spoiler :
What do you think about America's fascination with video games?
We're bored. I've got a home system, and I've gotten real addicted. It frightens me. I feel weird after 30 minutes of smashing electronic rocks. I used to have a Pac-Man game at my house. I played it until my hand got <snip>ed up and the skin rubbed off. I finally went, "What have I been doing eating dots for hours?"

Discuss. Is the video game addect thing really only happenid the last decede or so?

Nope, I was addicted to Manic Miner and other spectrum games.

Pac-Man is a great game but kids these days don't get it :(

EDIT: Best Spectrum game - Lords of Midnight http://www.worldofspectrum.org/infoseekid.cgi?id=0006604

Best Spectrum programmer - Joffa Smith

EDIT2: Follow his knackers problem here http://www.worldofspectrum.org/forums/showthread.php?t=29559

EDIT: Honourable mention - Stephen Crow http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Crow

I'd have thought that video game addiction was a bigger problem then, since the industry was newer and people would have been less aware of games' addictiveness, and thus would have had less coping skills.

I remember Space Invaders(which I for a long time thought was called EXE) and Gorillas:

As we got a better computer I got more interesting games like Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Monkey Island, prince of persia and Wolfpack. Great days.

Gorillas was written by Bill Gates I heard. Could be an urban myth though.

QBasic. Basic sucks.

Heres a game but its not a video game. This one is from April 1978.

Spoiler :
In the adjoining kitchen [to the recording studio], bassist Ron Blair and drummer Stan Lynch teach me a new game -- "smash the toy helicopter." The object of the game is to throw potentially destructive matter at a small, battery-powered plastic helicopter which flies in a circle at the end of wire attached to a fixed base on the counter. I toss a huge roll of construction tape at the chopper, grazing its tail and smashing a cup behind it. My next toss knocks over Lynch's coffee.
"That's pretty good," Blair tells me. "You learn fast." Not fast enough to actually put the whirly-bird out of commission, though. Lynch had that honor. "As I recall," Petty would tell me three weeks after this initial visit to the studio, "Stan got so into it that he threw a hammer at the damn thing." So much for studio fun and games.

Yeah I weaned myself off NetHack. It's a day by day thing.

EDIT: My problem was I'd get so drunk that by the time the pools started appearing (just before the castle) I'd accidentally fall into them and wipe all my scrolls and rust my armour

EDIT: Obviously I'm addicted to CivIV as well

Oh and don't remind me about how I put a bag of tricks into a bag of holding by mistake and a magical explosion lost all my cool gear.

She likes computers too. And the andbeatles part of her handle might tell you something as well ;)

I've put two bags of holding into each other by accident, not pretty.

I forgot to mention this. From the same interview:

Tom Petty: I read the other day that video games are taking 15 billion dollars directly out of the record business. As far as I'm concerned I'd rather put seven dollars' worth of quarters into a Pac-Man machine than into some dip-[excrement] album.

Take the first sentence and replace "video games" with "piracy." Does this sound familar (except perhaps the money figures).

Games industry is already bigger than the movie industry I heard.

The interview is from 1982. I won't say what magazine it is from as people will go "Why does she have an article from that magazine?"
