1861, A Brief Look (synopsis on the countries and a brief RL hisory)
The 1860's were the crossroads of the 19th Century. The Concert of Europe was beginning to fall to a growing tide of nationalism. The Americas were thrown into turmoil with the formation of the Confederacy. Asia and Africa had not yet been carved up between the competing British and French Empires. How the great powers of the time reacted set the course for the 20th Century, leading to the Alliance systems of the Great War, the Second World War, and the Cold War. Keep in mind that some of the powers of the 1860's no longer exist because of how they reacted.

Britain
By 1861 the British Empire was the greatest power on the planet. Its influence was felt on every continent, but the British Empire had not yet reached its peak, and its colonial holdings could just as easily been torn from it as Spain's had during the 1870's.

France
France competed with Britain on virtually every level. Though it was not as powerful as its sometime rival, sometime ally, France was still neck and neck with Britain in its colonial holdings. France is the only power in 1861 that can wage war with Britain on an equal footing.

Russia
The Russia of the 1860's had not yet suffered the crippling events of the Russo-Japanese War and the 1905 Revolution. Its power spread from Eastern Europe through Asia and into North America. Though it eventually fell to internal conflict, the Russia of the 1860's was still very much a world power.

Holland
Though Holland wasn't much of a power on the European continent, its colonial holdings in the Far East, Africa, and South America gave it the leverage to compete on about the same level as France and Russia

Turkey
The Turkey of the 1860's stretched from the Balkans to the Persian Gulf and south into Africa. Though it was considered the `Sick Man of Europe', destined for oblivion in the fires of the Great War, Turkey's central location and strength could have easily turned it into one of the world powers of the 20th Century.

China
19th Century China was rapidly falling to Western hands. By the 1860's China had already been forced to open its ports to foriegn control. However, Europe had not yet turned its full attention to Imperial domination of the Orient. China still had the chance to regain its standing amongst the Great Powers.

Prussia
Prussia was rapidly reaching its peak by the 1860's. By 1870, Prussia had unified Germany under its rule, radically shifting the balance of power in Europe away from Britain and France. As Germany, its political and military strength dictated the policies of both Britain and France during the latter half of the 19th Century.

Austria
One of the great European powers of the 19th Century, it was destined for economic ruin and political destruction by the end of the Great War. However, by 1861, the wars of unification had not yet happened in Germany and Italy. Austria still had the capacity of becoming a great power of the 20th Century.

Japan
Its gate forced open just 10 years prior, Japan was scrambling to `Westernize' itself for survival. Historically, Japan's standing in the eyes of the world was cemented by the Russo-Japanese War of 1905. However, it could have suffered the same fate as China just as easily.

USA
With the Secession of the Confederacy, the United States was thrown into turmoil, and its future was in no way secure. The 1860's was dominated by the bloodiest war in US history, and though it ended with the defeat of the Confederacy, it could have ended with the creation of a new and powerful neighbor in North America. Regardless of the outcome of the war, the United States was forever changed.

CSA
The Confederacy was struggling for its independance from the United States during the early 1860's. Though it was defeated, the Confederacy had the potential of radically changing the balance of power in North America and eventually the world. If it had survived, it could have easily become a great power in the 20th Century.

Mexico
By the 1860's, Mexico had gone through a series of revolutions and distasterous wars. It was on the decline. If it had taken advantage of the Civil War, Mexico might have been able to turn its fortunes around, eventually reclaiming territories it had lost to the US in the 1840's.

Brazil
One of the few major powers on the South American continent, Brazil faced few challenges to a possible expansion. It would have had the capacity to make its mark in world affairs, rising to the status of great power by the 20th Century.

Spain
By the 1860's Spain's empire in the America's was fast comming to an end. Spain faced a few challeges to its contiued existence. Rebellion against the Monarchy, Succession of its colonies, and an incresingly strong Britain, and France.

Persia
This ancient empire, stagnant for many centuries was fast comming to an end in the 1860's. However if its attitude towards the Ottoman behemoth to its West was a little diffrent, perhaps Persia would be a great power in the 20th century

Okay rules will be up in half an hour
Map soon, I need help to get it up!!!

Okay these rules are a blatant rip off of Jason's with a bit of Troq's :D Hope you don't mind, and if you want you can have Britain (sorry uknem)

Income

Each province gives you $2, each city gives you and additional $3.
You may bank only $100 at a time. Keep in mind when talking about world spanning empires, some nations are close to this limit already.

Cities
Each city costs you $20 to build, and populate. You may have two cities per a province, so even those provinces without cities are worth something. On the map they will be represented by white circles. They cannot be destroyed.

Movement
You may only move one province a turn. However if you wish you may force march some armies, costing $1 and forfeiting their rights to combat that turn.

Units will only fight in one combat, with one exception. If an army embarks on a Frigate and is involved in a naval battle, if they survive they will continue onto their intial objective.

If an army is being convoyed over water, An army may be landed on the same turn it embarked when their target has only one water region seperating them. eg. England, France and the Channel.

Units

Infantary good defence / moderate attack when supported by cannons $3
Cavlary good attack/ bad defense $5
Cannons bombard support infantary. Must be supported by other units. Danger of Capture. $10
Frigates Transport ships, sunk if attacked without an escort automatically
Ironclads Good defense / Bad attack, No bombardment $5
Olden Style Battleships Good attack/Bad defense, Bombard $10

All units may not attack the first turn they are built, they can only be built in cities. Naval units in Port cities,on the coast.

Units will not be represented on the map. This is mainly to speed up updates and to show the fact that intellegience was sketchy at best. battles will be reported, with losses and such. It is up to you the player to keep track of the units, if you lose where they are, it is your problem.

Neutrals

From time to time Neutrals close to your territory will willingly join your nation. However if you invade they will arm themselves for the defence of their country.

NB All nations have the same strengths in units. This again will speed up the updates.

UPDATES WILL BE AT APPROX 0500 hrs GMT time, every day, except SUNDAYS. If there is insufficent orders I will postpone for 24 Hrs. Insufficent is less than 75%

Here is the gold you have turn one:

Britain: $85
France: $66
Russia: $63
Holland: $51
Turkey: $60
China: $55
Prussia: $28
Austria: $36
Japan: $25
USA: $31
CSA: $24
Mexico: $30
Brazil: $31
Spain: $41
Persia: $28

Some turns this may vary with a random event. Some are good, (double that turns income) some are bad (halve it, destroy a city)

Also I forgot to mention while I am not paying close attention to where armies are I am writing the movemnets down, so there isn't unscruplous cheating

:D

Hey Dexter thanks but will you be able to take it down. I found later on that the damned map had bloody streaks which would of made changes impossible.. I just created a new one :D

r there any starting armies? I would be greatly destroyed if there weren't cus it would take me forever to reinforce all my colonies.

:)

Jason

Seriously Jason the only place in danger would be The Dominion of Canada. However I will make it a rule that each province starts with a militia. It is the same as an Infantary regiment but cannot move :D

Does this mean you have Britian?

I will take Austria if noone wants it (let's see if I can revive the Aubsburg Empire)

Saluti

Austria is taken. That now makes 4 if Anrchy takes it. I wanna wait until say another 4 are gone before we start. First update will probably be on Monday morning GMT. Sunday night for the Americans......

Hey Sheep

Is that CRC province in Columbia orange because it is mine??

And also, if I want to ask a neutral to join me... do I just say it in the thread (like a diplomatic move)?

Saluti

yes to both, or better still PM it to me also so I don't miss it
