Prologue:

This is a tale told using an old format describing a game played with the following settings and initial techs:

Starting Techs

Act I: The Beginning

Ancient legend chronicles the history of a civilization that would ultimately become lost in vicissitudes of time. It is said that a young ruler, destined for long life, left home to seek his fortune.

Spoiler :

His name was Darius and he succeeded in finding others like himself. Alas, fortune eluded him and he was forced to return home, broke and in debt.

Spoiler :

He had no sooner settled back home when a messenger arrived and informed him that the secrets of animal husbandry had been discovered. "Pleasant news indeed," he thought to himself. But depressed by his failure in amassing a fortune in the world, he stepped outside, cast his gaze heavenwards and contemplated the stars. "Could such a journey be possible?" he wondered. It was then and there that he set the task upon himself. Soon, the young ruler ordered the founding of cities to claim stone and marble while the rest of his recruits continued exploring the world. Meanwhile his researchers embarked on a path towards law and order.

Initial Research

Rumors of the king's lofty goal spread quickly. Villagers offered up recruits and secrets to help his cause. The effect was electric and Darius was soon poised for a more ambitious step in his quest.

Act II: Conquest

Daruis' band of searchers scoured the map and revealed a simple yet fateful discovery, a lake into which many long rivers emptied.

Spoiler :

By means of a few short portages, most of the southern parts of the world could be connected. Darius plotted conquest and ordered a critical city founded, the immortal city of Ecbatana.

Spoiler :

More good news arrived. Only one of the planet's inhabitants lived at either pole. The rest were in bands near the equator. With favorable connections available and well placed inhabitants, Darius ordered all foreign lands to be acquired except for the polar resident. The first target was Roosevelt. The initial plan: seize New York, double back north for De Gaulle, collecting reinforcements, gallop overland to Mehmed and speed to Washington.

Initial Conquests

Meanwhile, Jinjan was founded to produce units for a strike at Joao in Lisbon while warriors, recruited from the northern tundra, converged on Willem in Amsterdam.
Spoiler :

Middle Conquests

Lastly, Darius' main band of immortals raced southward from Boston to take out Suleiman, joining up with reinforcements from the capitol, then ran over Lincoln before wiping out Louis.
Spoiler :

Final Conquests

By 2050 BC, Darius's conquests were complete. But his appetite for land was still strong.

Act III: Further Expansion and Consolidation

In the year 2050 BC, with conquest behind him and his civilization in the throes of a golden age, Darius consulted his advisors. One, the Minister of Internal Technology, advocated a plan of settling extensively. Good advice. Thirty cities simply were not enough for his tastes. Therefore, Darius adopted the policy of SE (as defined by TMIT,) commissioned 17 more settlers and had his capitol lead the way.
Spoiler :

A scholar was also being sought to unlock the secrets of higher learning. Time moved by quickly. By 1500 BC an important building neared completion and the tech situation looked adequate.

During the next few centuries Darius solved the production problem in his quest for the stars. A critical building was finished and he had his eye on a needed recruit as well as a desired civic.

By now, not much needed to get done save for labs and the Apollo program.

Act IV: Departure

This chronicle of a lost civilzation is drawing to a close. In 580 BC, Darius led his civilization into one final golden age. The space race was officially underway. The status of the Apollo program and tech situation was thus:

However, a small glitch developed with one of the engines. It would finish 1 turn behind the other. Furthermore, a final chop wouldn't quite save the needed turn and Darius had been caught 2 workers short of an immediate chop nearby. Fortunately, a solution was found. Three citizens were available and willing to starve to produce the last few hammers.

Starving Citizens and Final Chop (next turn) Finish Engine in Time

Two turns later, in the year 390 BC, Darius and a small contingent, boarded the spacecraft and departed.

Epilogue:

In the years, centuries and millenia following his departure, Darius' civilization would decay and fade into the pages of history. It would not be remembered at all save for this chronicle. Modern archeologists would discover many of wonders built and question how they were built and by whom. Some would claim that aliens built the mids. But as is evident from this chronicle, they were built by residents of the planet who left. However, in 90 BC, Darius and his contingent arrived at their destination. There, by definition, they became aliens, the ones who built the mids.

What was Built

Partly because of settler difficulty, although it's still pretty impressive.
Perhaps you could try replicating this on chieftain? then warlord? and so and so forth upwards?

Thanks for the comments. I am considering whether it can be done at cheiftain. It's probably a coin flip. Tech speed with Darius comes naturally. A person gets better at it over time.

iggmyr i recommend you try to finish a pre 1000 ad space win with following settings
no tribal villages, no opponents, duel size, no events.
that will be more impressive;)

on settler difficulty with all those opponents it IS possible. try it with no random events, no tribal villages, aggressive leaders, and a higher difficulty level. marathon speed.

Thanks. Responding to some comments:

Duel map would be interesting, I was thinking of a tougher challenge like Toku.

Tired of marathon ATM, favorite speed is quick.

No random events? No problem! No villages is another story. The model is broken (whether they are on or off) and if I remember correctly they can't be turned off in Vanilla.

Why is roosevelt's capital new york and why has he orange (usually dutch) borders????

anyway great game I'm gonna try something similar too but I think I won't make it with my skills (prince-monarch)

A player can choose AI leaders and all leaders from a civ can be in the game. For a game like this it is necessary to have huts on and put no hunting civs in the game. Hunting civs are easily remembered by country so all 3 American leaders can be in the game as well as the English, French and Ottoman. Other countries, having only one leader can also be in but it is faster to set up a game with multiple civ leader countries first.
